Managing director and chief executive Ashok Chandra also said the bank plans to popularise its recurring-deposit (RD) product as stock-market volatility makes predictable returns more attractive to depositors.

Interest income was stronger
NII, the difference between interest earned on loans and interest paid on deposits, reached ₹11,601 crore, up about 10% from the comparable period according to the cited reports. The Financial Express also reported deposits of ₹17.77 lakh crore and a global net interest margin of 2.58% for the quarter. NII growth indicates that core lending and deposit activity contributed to earnings, although the reported margin is a bank-wide figure and does not show profitability for every product.

Lower provisions helped the bottom line
PNB recorded provisions of ₹97 crore, down from ₹643 crore a year earlier. Provisioning is the expense banks set aside for possible losses, so a smaller charge can lift net profit when the underlying loan book remains stable. PNB’s PCR was reported at 97.32%, meaning the bank had made substantial provisions against identified non-performing assets.
Asset quality improved
GNPA fell to 2.55% from 3.45%, while NNPA declined to 0.25% from 0.36%. GNPA measures bad loans before provisions; NNPA reflects the remaining bad-loan exposure after provisions. The simultaneous improvement in both ratios is a positive change in reported asset quality, but investors still need subsequent quarters to determine whether the improvement is sustained.
Why operating profit grew more slowly than net profit
Operating profit increased to ₹7,532 crore from ₹7,227 crore, a smaller year-over-year gain than the 13% rise in net profit. Chandra attributed the pressure to lower treasury income. He said PNB’s treasury profit was ₹753 crore in the quarter, compared with ₹1,769 crore in the same period of the previous financial year.
Treasury income can fluctuate with movements in bond prices and other market-linked holdings. In this quarter, the lower treasury contribution limited operating-profit growth, while reduced provisions and better asset-quality metrics supported the stronger increase in profit after tax.

What PNB has said about the recurring-deposit campaign
PNB has not published a formal launch notice for a new special RD scheme in the material cited for the results. Chandra said the bank already has an RD product and intends to promote it more aggressively: “We are planning to launch the RD scheme. We have the RD scheme, but we are going to popularise this now considering what is happening in the stock market.”
He described the timing as suitable for pitching a product that can provide a safe return to customers and depositors. The statement is management commentary, not confirmation that a new campaign is already available.

Terms that remain unannounced
PNB has not reported the campaign’s special name, interest rate, tenure options, minimum instalment, eligibility rules, launch date, premature-closure conditions or tax treatment in the cited coverage. Customers should check PNB’s official disclosures and branch or digital-banking terms before opening an account. Existing RD rates and conditions should not be assumed to be the terms of a future promotional campaign.

An RD lets a customer deposit a fixed amount at regular intervals for a stated maturity, with returns determined by the bank’s published deposit rate and applicable rules. That predictability contrasts with equities, whose value and returns can change daily. PNB’s comments refer to ongoing volatility, but the cited reports do not provide an index decline, a defined bearish period or a quantified measure of market stress. It would therefore be inaccurate to treat “bearish” as a measured market condition from these results alone.
Best Value
- Predictability: the depositor knows the instalment schedule and the rate applicable under the selected terms.
- Discipline: regular contributions can help customers build a goal-based savings balance.
- Trade-off: predictable bank-deposit returns do not provide equity-market upside, and early withdrawal may involve restrictions or a reduced payout under the applicable product rules.
The campaign is therefore a deposit-gathering and risk-positioning initiative, not a forecast that equities will fall or a recommendation that every saver should avoid market investments.
Other management signals to watch
Management guidance cited in the earnings coverage points to credit growth of 13% to 14% and a net interest margin target of 2.6% to 2.7%. These are targets, not achieved Q2 results. Future disclosures will show whether loan growth, margins, treasury income and asset-quality gains remain consistent with that guidance.
PNB’s official financial-disclosure index lists the September 2026 quarterly results, press release, analyst presentation and earnings-call materials. Those documents are the appropriate reference for any later update to the RD campaign’s formal terms or to the bank’s guidance.
What the quarter means for customers and shareholders
For depositors, the immediate news is that PNB intends to make its existing RD proposition more prominent while market conditions remain volatile; no special rate or launch date is confirmed. For shareholders, the quarter combined 13% profit growth, about 10% NII growth, lower bad-loan ratios and sharply lower provisions, but also lower treasury income that restrained operating-profit growth. The durability of the earnings improvement will depend on whether asset quality, margins and core income hold up in later quarters.
