Do not begin by downloading a random copy and placing it in System32. That may provide the wrong version or architecture, leave other dependencies missing, or introduce malware. The correct file should come from the original application or graphics-driver package.
What pmxgenin.dll does
Public archival metadata describes pmxgenin.dll as the Imagination Technologies Installer Utility DLL, part of the VideoLogic Installer. It is associated with older VideoLogic and PowerVR-era graphics software, including software supplied with legacy graphics hardware.

The filename alone cannot identify the exact program that needs it. The caller could be an old installer, graphics utility, game, startup entry, or an application left behind after the main software was removed.
Before fixing it, identify the program calling the DLL
The error window often names the executable or application. Write down:
- The full error text
- The application name
- The executable path, if shown
- Whether the error appears during startup, installation, or game launch
- Whether the program was recently removed, updated, or quarantined by antivirus
You can also check the caller manually.
Check Task Manager
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Processes or Details.
- Look for an old VideoLogic, PowerVR, graphics, installer, or game process.
- Right-click a likely process and choose Open file location.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
If the error appears before you can identify a process, continue with the repair steps below.
Check Event Viewer
- Press Win + R.
- Type
eventvwr.mscand press Enter. - Open Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the same time as the DLL message.
- Open the event and record the application name and path.
If the caller is unknown, do not restore a replacement DLL yet. An obsolete startup entry or suspicious executable may be requesting the file.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the original VideoLogic software
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus download or media-search time
This is the most likely solution because pmxgenin.dll belongs to the old VideoLogic Installer rather than Windows itself. Reinstalling the parent package restores the correct DLL together with its related files, registry entries, configuration, and dependencies.
If the software is still installed
- Press Win + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Search for VideoLogic, PowerVR, the graphics-card manufacturer, or the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
- Choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall, depending on what is available.
- If Repair is offered, run it first.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the original application again.
If there is no repair option, uninstall the damaged package, restart, and reinstall it from the original installation media or a verified archive supplied by the hardware manufacturer.
If the software came on a CD
- Insert the original graphics-card or application CD.
- Open File Explorer and browse the disc.
- Look for
Setup.exe,Install.exe, or a driver folder. - Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Install the complete graphics or utility package rather than copying an individual DLL.
- Restart Windows after setup finishes.
If Windows blocks an old installer, right-click its executable, select Properties, open the Compatibility tab, and try a compatible older Windows mode. Run the installer as administrator.

If you have a preserved installer
Use only a package that clearly matches the original VideoLogic, PowerVR, graphics-card, or application installation. Keep the installer in its original folder structure and let it choose the destination.
Do not extract pmxgenin.dll from a ZIP and place it in a Windows directory. The installer may also contain older support files that the DLL requires.

There is no currently identified official Imagination download containing this exact legacy DLL. Current PowerVR downloads are not automatically substitutes for the old VideoLogic installation.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The original program starts without the
pmxgenin.dllmessage - The installer completes without an extraction or dependency error
- The DLL is present beside the program that requested it
- The application no longer produces a “specified module could not be found” error
If the DLL is present but the error remains, the problem may be a missing dependency or an incompatible binary rather than the absence of pmxgenin.dll.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software may have removed or quarantined an old installer DLL. Age alone does not prove that a file is safe, so do not immediately restore it.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Look for an action involving
pmxgenin.dll, the parent application, or its installer. - Expand the detection to see the original file path and threat details.
- Compare that path with the known installation folder.
- Scan the complete original installer before restoring anything.
If Defender identifies the file as malware or repeatedly detects it, do not use Allow on device simply to remove the startup error. Reinstall the parent software from a trusted original source instead. Microsoft notes that restoring a detected file can cause it to be detected again.
If the file was quarantined from a legitimate, preserved installer, verify the installer’s provenance first. A DLL’s name, age, or description cannot prove that it is safe.
Fix 3: Verify the application or game files
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
If a game or application owns the folder where the error occurs, its files may be incomplete or corrupted.

- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the game.
- Choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to replace missing or damaged files.
- Restart Steam and launch the game.
Do not copy pmxgenin.dll into System32 or the game folder unless the game’s original installer or publisher specifically supplies and requires that exact file.
If verification does not find the file, the game may not actually be the original owner of the DLL. Recheck the executable path shown in Event Viewer or the error message.
Fix 4: Remove a stale startup entry
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
An old VideoLogic utility may have been removed while its startup reference remained. Windows then attempts to launch a file that no longer exists every time you sign in.
Remove the parent application
- Press Win + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Uninstall the obsolete VideoLogic, PowerVR, graphics utility, or related program.
If it is not listed:
- Press Win + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the old program.
- Choose Uninstall.
Disable a startup entry
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Find an entry associated with the old software.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.

Do not disable an entry merely because its name is unfamiliar. First use Open file location, inspect the executable, and confirm that it belongs to obsolete software. If the entry points to an unknown location or a suspicious executable, scan the file and investigate it instead of restoring the missing DLL.
Fix 5: Update or reinstall the related graphics driver
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This applies when the error began after a graphics-driver change or when the calling program is clearly tied to an old graphics card. A current driver will not normally recreate this legacy DLL, but reinstalling the complete package can repair a damaged installation.
Use Device Manager
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the relevant graphics adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the driver provider and version.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For an older card, Windows may not find a usable modern driver. Use the original card manufacturer’s installation media or a verified archive instead. Avoid replacing an entire legacy graphics package with a random DLL.

Reinstall the device
If the driver installation is damaged:
- In Device Manager, right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Confirm the uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the verified graphics-driver package.
- Restart again.
Do not uninstall the display adapter if you do not have a recovery path for the driver and the computer depends on that hardware for normal display output.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
pmxgenin.dll is not identified as a protected Windows file, so SFC and DISM will not normally recreate it. These commands are useful when multiple programs report damaged Windows components or when the problem began alongside broader system corruption.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the affected application again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.

Fix 7: Install pending Windows updates
Time needed: 10–25 minutes, excluding download time
Windows Update is not expected to supply pmxgenin.dll, but updates can resolve compatibility problems or repair wider servicing issues.
- Press Win + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
If the error began immediately after a driver or software change, updating may not reverse that change. Use System Restore instead if an appropriate restore point exists.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
System Restore can return drivers, installed programs, registry settings, and system configuration to an earlier state. It does not normally remove personal documents, photos, or other personal files.
- Press Win + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if available.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Next.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore will not reliably recreate a third-party DLL that was never included in the restore point. If the error remains, reinstall the original parent software.
Do not routinely use regsvr32
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a missing file, install a graphics driver, or supply dependencies.
Do not run:
regsvr32 pmxgenin.dll
unless the original software documentation specifically tells you to register this DLL.

The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That result does not mean Windows needs another copy of the file. It means the DLL is not a self-registering COM component.
Why manually copying the DLL often fails
A standalone copy may be wrong in several ways:
- It may be from a different release
- It may be 64-bit instead of x86
- It may have been renamed from another file
- It may require other missing VideoLogic files
- It may be damaged or infected
- It may belong beside a specific application executable rather than in a system directory
Do not copy it into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those directories have different purposes on 64-bit Windows, and placing a third-party DLL there can create new conflicts.
The correct location is normally determined by the original installer. For a 32-bit application, the matching DLL may need to sit beside that application’s executable.

“pmxgenin.dll was not found”
Windows cannot locate the named DLL where the calling program expects it. Reinstall the parent application first.
“The file pmxgenin.dll is missing or corrupted”
The file may be absent, damaged, quarantined, or incompatible. Check Protection history, then repair the complete application package.
