PM2.5, AQI, and Smoke Sensors: What the Numbers Mean During Wildfire Smoke

PM2.5, AQI, and a consumer smoke sensor are three different kinds of information. PM2.5 is a measurement of fine particle pollution. The U.S. Air Quality Index (AQI) converts pollutant concentrations into health-communication categories. A home sensor estimates particle conditions at one location. During wildfire smoke, use a sensor to watch local changes, but use AirNow’s official U.S. AQI and Fire and Smoke Map for the broader health picture.

The three numbers are not interchangeable

Confusion starts when an app labels every value “air quality.” The same screen may show a PM2.5 concentration, a private AQI calculation, or an official AirNow value based on a different time window and monitoring source. Identify what each number represents before comparing it.

Term What it is What it tells you Main limitation
PM2.5 Fine particle pollution concentration How much fine particulate matter is estimated in the air It is not itself a health category; the time period and measurement method matter
U.S. AQI EPA’s color-coded health communication index How a pollutant level relates to increasing health concern It can represent different pollutants and averaging periods
Consumer smoke sensor A local, usually low-cost estimate of particle conditions Whether particles near the device appear to be rising or falling Readings can be biased, delayed, affected by placement, or unavailable

A sensor’s instantaneous PM2.5 estimate, its displayed private “AQI,” an AirNow current NowCast, and the daily AQI may all show different values without any of them being mislabeled. They use different sources, corrections, averaging windows, and purposes.

What PM2.5 means

PM2.5 means particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 micrometers or smaller. It is commonly reported as a concentration rather than as a category. These fine particles can travel deep into the respiratory system, which is why PM2.5 is the key pollutant AirNow highlights in wildland-fire smoke.

It is suitable for use in homes, vehicles, grow rooms, maternity and infant care rooms, and public spaces.

A PM2.5 value answers a measurement question: “How much fine particle pollution is estimated here over this reporting period?” It does not, by itself, tell you whether conditions are classified as Good, Unhealthy, or Hazardous. That health communication step is what the AQI provides.

During a wildfire, particle levels can change quickly as smoke arrives, shifts direction, or clears. A single reading is therefore less useful than a trend viewed alongside official information. Rising readings indoors can indicate that smoke is entering or that an indoor source is active; falling readings after windows are closed and filtration is started suggest the intervention is reducing particles in that room. Neither pattern certifies that the air is safe.

How the U.S. AQI works

EPA describes the U.S. AQI as its tool for communicating daily air quality and health implications across five regulated pollutants. The index translates pollutant concentrations into six color-coded categories. Values above 100 are considered unhealthy, first for sensitive groups and, as values rise, for a larger share of the population.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
U.S. AQI Category General meaning
0–50 Good Air quality poses little or no risk under the index’s general guidance
51–100 Moderate Air quality is acceptable overall, though unusually sensitive people may notice effects
101–150 Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups People with heart or lung disease, older adults, children, and other sensitive groups may be affected first
151–200 Unhealthy Some members of the general public may experience health effects, with greater concern for sensitive groups
201–300 Very Unhealthy Health warnings become more serious for everyone
301 and higher Hazardous Emergency conditions and the greatest likelihood of serious effects

For particle pollution, the daily AQI uses a 24-hour period. That means a daily category is not a direct conversion of a sensor’s current, minute-by-minute estimate. AQI can also be driven by a pollutant other than PM2.5; an AQI dial on an interactive map may be showing ozone or another pollutant when you expected particles.

Why AirNow’s current value may differ from your sensor

AirNow’s current conditions use a NowCast, not simply the latest single observation. The NowCast combines several recent hourly observations. When conditions are stable, it uses longer averaging; when conditions change rapidly, such as during a wildfire, it gives more weight to recent hours through a shorter effective average.

This design makes the NowCast responsive without treating one abrupt measurement as the whole story. A consumer monitor may refresh every few seconds and display an instantaneous estimate, while AirNow is representing a recent multi-hour condition. Comparing those values as if they were simultaneous measurements of the same quantity will produce apparent disagreement.

AirNow’s ordinary interactive map displays permanent monitors. During smoke events, AirNow directs people to the Fire and Smoke Map, which combines permanent and temporary monitors with crowdsourced low-cost sensors and smoke or fire context. The map’s sensor readings may be delayed, unavailable, or erroneous because of measurement, transmission, or aggregation problems.

What a consumer smoke sensor can—and cannot—tell you

Where it helps

  • It can provide frequent observations at your home, workplace, or neighborhood.
  • It can reveal local trends between official monitoring sites, especially where permanent monitors are sparse.
  • It can help you evaluate whether closing windows, reducing indoor sources, or running filtration changes particle levels in a room.
  • It can provide context for deciding when to check official smoke guidance more closely.

Why its number is not an official measurement

Low-cost sensors use different optical technologies, enclosures, software, and calibration approaches. EPA identifies possible bias or inaccuracy, sensor failure, unknown siting, and crowdsourcing as limitations. AirNow quality-controls low-cost sensor data and applies a correction equation on its map, but EPA does not use those sensor data for regulatory purposes or official daily AQI reporting. The corrected values are informational.

EPA reports that uncorrected PurpleAir sensors tend to overestimate PM2.5 mass concentrations while generally tracking trends seen in collocated monitors. That finding supports using a consumer device to watch direction and timing—up, down, or unchanged—not treating its displayed concentration as an exact regulatory value. A mention of a sensor brand in EPA or U.S. Forest Service material is not an endorsement.

Private AQI labels need extra caution

An app may calculate its own AQI from a sensor value. Methods can differ in breakpoint tables, pollutant selection, averaging period, and correction. AirNow recommends checking the official U.S. AQI to confirm an app or sensor reading, particularly during smoke events.

How to reconcile different readings

When your monitor, a phone app, and AirNow disagree, work through these checks in order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the pollutant. Confirm whether each display refers to PM2.5, PM10, ozone, or an aggregate AQI. An AQI value driven by ozone cannot be compared directly with a PM2.5 concentration.
  2. Identify the unit and index. Determine whether the number is a particle concentration or an AQI category. A concentration and an index are different scales.
  3. Check the averaging window. Look for an instantaneous estimate, a recent-hour NowCast, or a 24-hour daily AQI. The labels “current” and “today” do not mean the same thing across services.
  4. Check location and distance. Your sensor measures one room. An official monitor may be several miles away and outdoors. Smoke can vary sharply across neighborhoods and indoors.
  5. Check correction and quality control. Find out whether the low-cost reading is raw, corrected, or quality-controlled. AirNow’s map applies its own correction to the low-cost data it displays.
  6. Check for delays or outages. Sensor transmission, aggregation, or network problems can leave a stale or missing value. Compare the timestamp, not just the number.
  7. Use the official context for decisions. During wildfire smoke, consult AirNow’s Fire and Smoke Map and U.S. AQI even when your private display looks better or worse.

Where to put an indoor air-quality sensor

Placement determines what your device is actually sampling. The EPA placement guidance in its 2023 sensor fact sheet recommends positioning a sensor about 3–6 feet above the ground, near breathing height, with airflow around it.

For most accurate readings, avoid using alcohol, perfumes, disinfectant sprays, or strong cleaning agents near the device during testing. Also allow 10 minutes for warm-up after moving between hot and cold environments – this ensures stable, reliable data every time.
  • Keep the inlet unobstructed and avoid enclosing the device in a cabinet or behind furniture.
  • Keep it away from exterior doors and windows, where drafts can create a highly local reading.
  • Do not place it immediately beside a stove, fireplace, candle, or other particle source unless you are deliberately measuring that source.
  • Avoid heating and cooling vents, which can produce unusually mixed or turbulent air at the sensor.
  • Place it in the room where people spend time, rather than assuming a hallway represents every room.

If you use a portable air cleaner, placing the sensor in that room can help you see particle trends and decide when to turn the cleaner on. Keep the sensor out of the cleaner’s direct exhaust so it does not measure an artificially purified plume instead of room air.

EPA’s sensor factsheet index lists a June 2026 factsheet, but the complete contents of that revision were not available in the reviewed material. Therefore, the 3–6-foot recommendation above is specifically attributed to the 2023 fact sheet (EPA-452/F-23-004), not presented as a confirmed requirement of the 2026 edition.

Using a sensor during wildfire smoke

Start with the official outdoor picture

Open the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map and check the U.S. AQI for your area. Look at the smoke and fire context and note the time of the latest observations. Treat the map as the reference for health communication, not the private AQI label on a sensor app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce indoor particle entry

When outdoor smoke is the concern, EPA recommends keeping doors and windows closed and using a portable air cleaner if one is available. The cleaner works best when run continuously under those conditions. Follow the manufacturer’s ventilation and filter instructions, and avoid creating indoor particles through smoking, frying, candles, or fires while smoke is present.

Use the sensor to evaluate trends

Watch whether the indoor PM2.5 estimate changes after windows are closed or filtration starts. A sustained decline suggests fewer particles in that room; a spike can prompt a check for an open window, a cooking activity, a failing filter, or a device-placement problem. Continue following smoke-health guidance even if the indoor display is low, because a consumer sensor cannot certify safety and does not measure every health-relevant pollutant.

What the numbers can support—and what they cannot

Question Most useful information Do not infer
Is wildfire smoke affecting my region? AirNow U.S. AQI and Fire and Smoke Map That one nearby sensor represents the entire region
Are particles changing in this room? A consistently placed sensor viewed as a time trend That one instantaneous value is an official AQI
Can I compare two apps? Pollutant, averaging window, location, correction, and timestamp That equal labels mean equal calculations
Did an air cleaner change conditions? Before-and-after trend from a sensor placed in the treated room That a lower reading proves the room is safe for every person

People with asthma, heart or lung disease, children, older adults, and others advised by a clinician to limit smoke exposure should follow health recommendations tied to the official AQI and local public-health instructions. A sensor can add local context, but it does not replace those instructions.

Bottom line

Read PM2.5 as a particle measurement, AQI as a health-oriented index, and a smoke sensor as a local estimate. Expect differences because the systems use different locations, corrections, and time windows. During wildfire smoke, use AirNow’s U.S. AQI and Fire and Smoke Map for decisions, and use a properly placed indoor sensor to observe trends and check whether filtration or closed windows are changing particle levels.
