Plex and Jellyfin Metadata and Tagging: How to Fix Wrong Matches and Missing Information

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

If Plex or Jellyfin shows the wrong poster, summary, cast list, or even the wrong film, the cause is usually identifiable: the server parsed an ambiguous name, searched the wrong library type, selected an unexpected metadata source, or has no provider record for a field. Plex separates file scanning from metadata matching and offers correction tools; Jellyfin can disambiguate movies and shows with provider IDs in names and folders. The reliable fix is to diagnose the stage that failed, then apply the platform-specific remedy.

How Plex and Jellyfin identify your media

Both servers build a library from your folders and files, but their terminology and controls differ. A scanner first examines the directory structure and filenames to decide what a file represents. A metadata component then matches that item to information from local or online sources, such as titles, descriptions, artwork, cast and crew.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters when troubleshooting. A scanner can classify a file correctly while the metadata lookup chooses the wrong title. Conversely, a title may be matched correctly but still have sparse artwork or missing fields because the selected provider does not contain them. Treating every problem as a “bad match” leads to unnecessary renaming or repeated refreshes.

Plex: scanning first, then agent matching

Plex documentation describes a scanner that analyzes files and folder structure, followed by a metadata agent that uses the scanner’s information to retrieve metadata from local and online resources. Names and directories therefore influence both the content type Plex detects and, in many cases, which item it attempts to match. Plex recommends following its movie, television and other media naming and organization guidance rather than relying on a descriptive filename alone.

Jellyfin: provider-aware identification

Jellyfin also uses names and folders, and its documentation provides an additional disambiguation method: provider identifiers embedded in a movie or show filename or folder. Supported identifier providers documented for this purpose are TMDB, TVDB and OMDb (English only). Jellyfin says these identifiers improve identification accuracy and allows multiple IDs for one item.

Why is Plex/Jellyfin not finding my movie?

Start with the basics before changing metadata sources. A title that cannot be found is often in the wrong library type, has a filename that does not clearly describe it, or sits in a directory structure that the scanner cannot interpret.

  • Confirm that the folder belongs to the intended library type: movie, television, music, book or another type supported by your server.
  • Check spelling, punctuation, release-year information and the surrounding folder names. Remove unrelated text that could be mistaken for part of the title.
  • Keep each movie in a predictable directory and keep a television series, its seasons and episodes in a consistent hierarchy.
  • Allow the server’s scan and metadata matching operation to finish before judging the result.

The exact naming rules vary by media type and server version. Plex’s scanner guidance is the authority for Plex conventions; Jellyfin’s provider-identifier documentation is the authority for its ID syntax. Do not assume that a Jellyfin naming trick is also a Plex instruction.

If Plex still shows an unmatched item

After the scan completes, open Plex’s item-level matching controls. Plex’s matching guidance identifies the Fix Match and Match tools as the way to correct an item that remains unmatched or has been associated with the wrong title. Search for the intended title and select the result that corresponds to your file. If the search produces poor candidates, return to the filename and directory check rather than repeatedly selecting an unrelated result.

If Jellyfin still cannot distinguish the title

Add a provider ID to the relevant movie or series filename or folder, then rescan or refresh that item. Jellyfin’s documented examples include:

  • Movie Name [tmdbid-680]
  • Series Name [tvdbid-79168]
  • Series Name [imdbid-tt12801262]

The documentation also accepts documented identifier aliases and square brackets, parentheses or braces. Use the provider and number that actually identify your title; an incorrect ID can produce a confidently wrong match. Multiple identifiers may be supplied when that is useful for the item.

How to fix a wrong match

A wrong match means the server attached your file to the wrong database record. Fix that before adjusting posters or tags: artwork and summaries belong to the selected record, so cosmetic changes will not repair an incorrect identity.

Plex correction sequence

  1. Open the incorrectly identified item after the library scan has completed.
  2. Use Fix Match or Match, depending on the control shown by your Plex server version.
  3. Search using a cleaner title and, where appropriate, the release year.
  4. Select the result that represents the exact film, series or other item.
  5. Refresh the item’s metadata so the newly selected record supplies its poster, summary, cast and other fields.

If the same file keeps returning to the wrong record during future scans, improve its filename and folder placement. Matching tools correct the current association; clear naming reduces the chance of the next scan recreating the problem.

Jellyfin correction sequence

  1. Identify the provider whose record you want Jellyfin to use: TMDB, TVDB or, for English data, OMDb.
  2. Place the corresponding provider identifier in the movie or series filename or folder using Jellyfin’s documented bracketed form, such as [tmdbid-680].
  3. Save the renamed file or folder without changing the identifier digits.
  4. Run the library scan or item refresh available in your Jellyfin server.
  5. Check that the title, year and artwork now belong to the intended record.

Provider IDs are a Jellyfin feature documented for movies and shows. Do not copy this bracket syntax into a Plex troubleshooting guide as though Plex used the same mechanism.

Why are the poster, summary, cast or tags wrong?

When the title itself is correct, investigate metadata sources rather than identification. A provider may have incomplete data, or your server may be prioritizing a source whose artwork or fields differ from another source.

Plex agents and source priority

Plex lets you configure metadata agents and the sources they use, including source priorities. The order can affect which description, image or other value is selected when several sources provide information. Plex also documents local assets as an option for music when embedded metadata is available and Local Media Assets is enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When source settings change, Plex’s agent guidance says to refresh all metadata if you want the new choices applied to existing library content. The same guidance notes that changing an agent on an existing library affects future content, so an agent change alone should not be treated as a retroactive rewrite of every item. Use the documented refresh action for the scope you intend, and expect the live labels to vary with server version.

Jellyfin providers and optional plugins

Jellyfin exposes provider configuration for its libraries and supports optional plugins. Its official plugin documentation describes metadata plugins that can scrape a new source or modify existing metadata. Plugin availability and compatibility can change with the Jellyfin server version, so verify both before installing or relying on a particular extension.

The official plugin list includes TMDb Box Sets, which can create collections based on TMDB collections. That is a collection feature, not a universal replacement for the core movie or series matcher. A plugin can add or transform metadata, but it cannot compensate for a file that has been assigned to the wrong library type or given an incorrect provider ID.

How do I add tags or metadata?

“Tags” can mean different things: a provider’s genre or keyword fields, a manually edited label, a collection membership, or metadata embedded in the file itself. Decide which kind you need before changing files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the server’s metadata controls for presentation

For a correctly matched item, use the item’s edit or metadata controls to change fields that your server permits you to edit, such as a title, summary, artwork choice or tags. The available fields and persistence behavior depend on the server version and media type. A manual edit is appropriate when the provider record is correct but your library needs a house label or a different description.

Use embedded or sidecar metadata where the format supports it

Do not assume that every file format exposes the same tags. Plex documents reading embedded metadata in most music formats when Local Media Assets is enabled. Jellyfin’s books documentation describes embedded metadata and external files such as content.opf, metadata.opf or ComicInfo.xml for relevant book formats. Those examples establish format-specific options, not a universal precedence rule for every movie, song, ebook or comic.

Before editing a file, confirm that the media type and format are covered by the platform’s documentation. A sidecar file in the wrong directory, or a tag field unsupported by the parser, may be ignored without an obvious error.

Plex and Jellyfin: what is different?

Area Plex Jellyfin
Primary identification inputs Filenames and directory structure are analyzed by the scanner, then passed to a metadata agent. Filenames and folders are used, with documented provider IDs available for movies and shows.
Provider disambiguation Use the documented matching controls and improve naming; Plex’s guidance does not prescribe Jellyfin-style bracketed IDs. TMDB, TVDB and OMDb (English only) IDs can be placed in names or folders; multiple IDs may be supplied.
Correction workflow Use Fix Match or Match after checking the filename and library type. Add or correct a provider identifier, then rescan or refresh the item.
Source control Configure agents and source priorities; refresh metadata when changed settings should apply to existing items. Configure providers and use optional metadata plugins where compatible.
Local or file metadata examples Embedded metadata in most music formats when Local Media Assets is enabled. Embedded book/audio metadata and external OPF or ComicInfo.xml files for relevant book formats.

These differences are media-type-specific. Movie matching, episodic television, music, photos and books do not necessarily expose the same fields or controls on either platform.

A practical diagnostic decision tree

The title is wrong or missing

  • Check library type, filename and folder structure.
  • On Plex, use Fix Match or Match after scanning.
  • On Jellyfin, add the correct TMDB, TVDB or OMDb identifier to the movie or show name or folder.

The title is right but artwork or text is wrong

  • Check which agent or provider supplied the item.
  • Review source priority and whether the provider actually contains the desired field.
  • Refresh metadata after Plex source-setting changes; on Jellyfin, check provider settings or a compatible metadata plugin.

You need a personal label or collection

  • Use the server’s editable metadata or tag controls for the item.
  • Use a documented collection feature or compatible plugin when you need grouped titles.
  • Keep provider IDs and file names focused on identification; do not encode every personal category into a filename unless the platform documents that behavior.

Version and maintenance cautions

Navigation labels and plugin compatibility are not permanent. Plex’s matching-process guidance was last modified March 27, 2019, while its agent guidance was identified as last modified November 18, 2025. Jellyfin’s documentation pages can also change as server releases and plugins evolve. Before following a version-specific screen path, compare the labels in your installed server with the current official documentation.

Legacy Plex agents and Jellyfin plugins may have different maintenance status from the built-in components. Treat an optional extension as a compatibility decision, not as a guaranteed part of every installation.

Can I use TMDB IDs in filenames?

Yes, Jellyfin’s documented provider-identifier feature supports TMDB IDs in movie or show filenames and folders, using forms such as [tmdbid-680]. Jellyfin also documents TVDB and OMDb identifiers and allows multiple IDs. Plex’s naming and matching guidance does not establish that Jellyfin’s bracketed syntax works in Plex, so use Plex’s own naming and Fix Match workflow there.

What to check before rescanning

  • Is the item inside the correct library and media-type folder?
  • Does the filename clearly identify the title, and is the folder structure consistent?
  • Has the initial scan and metadata lookup finished?
  • Is the problem identity, source selection, missing provider data, or a personal tag?
  • For Jellyfin, is the provider ID correct and attached to the relevant movie or show name?
  • For Plex, did you use Fix Match or Match rather than only refreshing artwork?
  • After changing Plex source settings, did you perform the documented metadata refresh needed for existing items?
