For a new workflow that captures a product price after a shopper selects a variant, Playwright is a practical default: its locator actions wait for elements to be ready, its assertions retry until a condition passes or times out, and its page API can wait for a matching network response. Selenium can handle the same task with explicit waits tied to the selected variant or updated price, and may be the better choice when your team already has a Selenium stack. Neither framework is established as universally more accurate; correctness depends on waiting for the right page-specific signal before reading the price.
Why a successful variant click is not enough
A click completing only tells you the interaction action finished. The site may still be processing the selected size, color, or configuration, fetching an updated offer, and rendering the new price. Reading the price immediately can therefore capture the previous variant’s value.
Selenium describes the underlying synchronization issue: “Perhaps the most common challenge for browser automation is ensuring that the web application is in a state to execute a particular Selenium command as desired.” Selenium: Waiting Strategies
Build the capture around two distinct events: selecting the variant, then observing a meaningful indication that the page reflects that selection. That indication might be a checked option, a changed product identifier, a matching price response, or the expected price text. Which signal is appropriate depends on the retailer; there is no universal selector or condition.

Choosing between Playwright and Selenium
| Decision | Playwright | Selenium | What it means for price capture |
|---|---|---|---|
| Action and state waits | Locator actions auto-wait for readiness; web-first assertions retry conditions until they pass or time out. Playwright: Actionability | Explicit waits poll for a condition chosen by your script. Implicit waits affect element location globally. Selenium: Waiting Strategies | Playwright offers an integrated default for dynamic pages. Selenium can express precise site-specific conditions, especially within an established WebDriver setup. |
| Observing a price request | Page APIs can wait for matching requests or responses, including XHR and fetch traffic. Playwright: Network | The Selenium materials cited here cover waits and proxy-based traffic capture but do not establish a one-call equivalent for matching a response. | If variant selection triggers a known endpoint, response-aware waiting can help. Still verify that the response and rendered price correspond to the chosen variant. |
| Browser coverage | Documents Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, branded browsers, and emulated devices. Playwright: Browsers | Uses WebDriver browser options; available browsers and behavior depend on browser and driver setup. Selenium also documents page-load strategies. Selenium: Browser Options | Check the browsers, versions, and deployment environment your workflow actually requires. Support statements do not guarantee identical retailer behavior in every browser. |
| Team and infrastructure fit | Useful when its APIs and supported language/runtime suit the project. | Often a natural fit when existing WebDriver code, drivers, and team experience are already in place. | Migration cost depends on your repository and team; framework documentation cannot determine it for you. |
| Remote execution | BrowserStack and Sauce Labs document Playwright options, with compatibility constraints for some connection modes. BrowserStack Playwright Sauce Labs Playwright | Both vendors document Selenium support. BrowserStack Selenium Sauce Labs Selenium | A hosted grid can supply remote test environments; it does not replace a correct post-selection state condition. |
Playwright’s documentation says, “Playwright automatically waits for element to be ready before performing an action.” That describes action readiness—not proof that an asynchronous price update has finished. Playwright: Page API
Use a state-based capture sequence
- Identify the variant control and price element. Prefer stable roles, accessible labels, or retailer-specific attributes over brittle positional selectors. Determine how the page exposes the selected option and updated price.
- Choose a completion signal. Use an expected displayed value or selected state when that is reliable. If the page makes a known request for the chosen variant, wait for its response too. A response alone may not prove the page has rendered the corresponding price.
- Begin observing a known response before the click. The request might arrive quickly, so register the response wait first.
- Select the variant and wait for the chosen signal. Keep the condition tied to the requested variant or price, not merely to the presence of an element that was already on the page.
- Read and record the displayed price only after the condition passes. Where possible, store the selected variant identifier with the price so downstream consumers can associate the offer with the right option.
- Bound the wait. If the condition times out, report the capture as unresolved. Do not silently save the old price as though it belongs to the newly selected variant.
- Validate per retailer and browser configuration. Selectors and page behavior are site-specific, and browser support does not promise that every retailer behaves identically across engines.
Playwright example: wait for the response and rendered price
This JavaScript example uses a placeholder product page, variant label, response URL, and expected price. Replace each with values observed on the target store. The response predicate must identify the request for the selected variant; the assertion then checks the rendered price. A 10-second timeout is an example application policy, not a guarantee about how quickly a retailer responds.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('captures the selected variant price', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://shop.example/products/item');
const variant = page.getByLabel('Blue / Large');
const price = page.getByTestId('product-price');
// Adapt this predicate to the store's actual price endpoint and variant ID.
const responsePromise = page.waitForResponse(response =>
response.url().includes('/api/product-price') &&
response.url().includes('variant=blue-large') &&
response.ok(),
{ timeout: 10_000 }
);
await variant.click();
const response = await responsePromise;
// Response completion and rendered UI state are separate checks.
expect(response.ok()).toBeTruthy();
await expect(price).toHaveText('$29.99', { timeout: 10_000 });
const selectedVariant = await variant.getAttribute('value');
const displayedPrice = (await price.innerText()).trim();
console.log({ selectedVariant, displayedPrice });
});
If the application exposes no stable test ID, replace getByTestId with a locator appropriate to the page, such as a role or a site-specific selector. If the endpoint does not encode the variant in its URL, inspect the request and match a reliable response property or other signal instead. Do not treat the placeholder selectors or price as universal.
Selenium example: wait explicitly for the new price
This Python example waits for the visible price to equal an expected value after selecting an option. Adapt the locator, option, price, and timeout to the retailer. If the price may legitimately vary, wait for a page-specific signal such as a changed product identifier or selected state rather than hard-coding a value.

Selenium warns that mixing implicit and explicit waits can produce unpredictable elapsed times. For this workflow, use explicit waits for the conditions that indicate the selected variant’s price is ready, and avoid relying only on navigation readiness or generic element presence. Common failure modes and fixes
- The old price is captured. The click completed, but the price update had not. Wait for the expected new price, a changed identifier, or another post-selection state before reading.
- The response wait times out. Confirm that the target page actually sends the expected request, that the predicate matches its URL or other identifying details, and that response observation starts before the click. If no matching request exists, wait for a reliable UI condition instead.
- The response arrives but the UI is stale. A response signal and a rendered value are different events. Verify the price element after the response and ensure the response belongs to the requested variant.
- A generic presence wait passes too soon. The price element may exist before its text changes. Wait for a specific value or another state that can only be true after selection.
- Selectors break on another store or layout. Replace placeholders with selectors grounded in that retailer’s accessible labels or stable attributes, then validate them in each supported browser configuration.
- Wait durations behave unpredictably in Selenium. Avoid mixing implicit and explicit waits; use explicit conditions with a bounded timeout.
- A timeout is mistaken for a valid result. Surface it as a failed or unresolved capture and preserve diagnostic context rather than storing a potentially stale price.
Performance, reliability, and operating constraints
Waiting on the condition that matters is generally more meaningful than adding a fixed sleep: an arbitrary delay can waste time on a fast response and still be too short on a slow one. Playwright discourages networkidle as a blanket readiness test for tests and recommends assertions or other signals instead. Playwright: Page API A retailer may keep background requests active, so overall network quiet is not necessarily evidence that a selected variant’s price is correct.
No framework-wide speed, extraction-accuracy, or reliability percentage is established here. Validate the workflow against the target retailers and browsers, define bounded timeouts, and retain enough context—such as the selected variant and observed price—to diagnose failures. This guidance does not establish permission to automate a particular store or its rate limits; check the site’s requirements and applicable rules before running captures.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can either framework guarantee the captured price is the correct one?
No. The workflow must verify a retailer-specific signal that the selected variant’s price has updated; framework choice alone does not establish correctness.
Does a Playwright response wait replace checking the page?
No. Confirm the response corresponds to the selected variant and verify the rendered price separately.
