Choose Playwright when the screenshots are part of automated visual regression testing: Playwright Test includes screenshot assertions and a baseline workflow. Choose Puppeteer for a direct page- or element-capture workflow. Neither emulation profile proves how a site behaves on physical phones; use real-device testing when the behavior depends on actual hardware, an operating system, or browser integration.

How mobile emulation differs
Playwright device descriptors
Playwright’s device registry supplies configurations that can include a user agent, screen dimensions, viewport, and touch behavior. You can use a descriptor as a starting point and override context settings when the test needs a particular configuration. Preconfigured devices assume a platform-specific user agent, so check that the profile matches the platform you intend to simulate. Playwright emulation documentation
Puppeteer device emulation
Puppeteer’s Page.emulate() applies a known device’s metrics and user agent; its documentation describes the method as a shortcut for setting the user agent and viewport. In either tool, emulation means the browser is using selected mobile-like settings. It is useful for responsive layouts and browser-level checks, but does not reproduce every hardware, operating-system, or browser integration detail of a real phone.
Capture screenshots with Puppeteer
This runnable Node.js example emulates a mobile profile before loading a page, then saves a full-page PNG. Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project with npm install puppeteer; the package’s browser setup is documented by Puppeteer. Puppeteer installation

Capture screenshots with Playwright
Install the Playwright test package and browser binaries for the project with npm init playwright@latest, following the prompts for the language and test setup. This example uses Playwright Test with a device descriptor and writes a full-page PNG.

Make comparisons repeatable
A screenshot diff can reflect a changed environment rather than a changed page. Playwright identifies operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode as factors that can affect rendering. Generate baselines and comparisons in the same environment where possible, and pin the runtime, browser version, host image, and screenshot settings your project controls. - Choose the intended device descriptor and verify its viewport, screen metrics, user agent, and touch settings.
- Apply emulation before navigation.
- Capture the same scope each time: viewport, full page, or a selected element.
- For regression assertions, inspect and commit only deliberate baseline updates.
When emulation is not enough
Use a physical device or an appropriate real-device test environment when the question depends on actual device behavior—for example, operating-system integration, hardware-specific behavior, or the browser implementation on a target phone. Playwright documents Android automation separately as experimental support. Its Android route requires ADB and an Android device or Android Virtual Device; it does not support raw USB operation, and its test coverage is incomplete. The page looks desktop-sized despite mobile emulation
Confirm that the device settings were applied before navigation. With Puppeteer, call page.emulate() before goto(); with Playwright, configure the test context or page before loading the site. Check the viewport and user agent rather than assuming a device label alone answers every configuration question.

Screenshot baselines keep changing
Keep the browser version, host environment, headless mode, and capture settings consistent between baseline creation and comparison. Differences can come from the rendering environment as well as application changes.

An element screenshot fails or captures nothing useful
Verify the selector matches an element after the page has loaded. If the element is conditional or delayed, wait for it to appear before capturing; otherwise the selection may be missing when the screenshot code runs.
A passing emulation test misses a phone-specific defect
Move that check to real-device testing when the defect depends on physical hardware or operating-system/browser integration. A mobile profile is an emulation configuration, not proof of physical-device compatibility.
