Use Playwright Test’s built-in toHaveScreenshot() assertion to compare a page against a reviewed reference image. The first run creates the baseline; later runs report visual differences. For dependable results, create and compare snapshots using the same operating system and browser environment, and review any baseline update before committing it. The commands below are portable; the official guidance cited here is general, not specific to India.
Write your first screenshot test
This example assumes your project already has Playwright Test installed and configured. Add a test file such as tests/homepage.spec.ts:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png');
});
Replace the URL with the page your test should capture. Start the application before running the test, or configure a Playwright web server for your project. The explicit filename makes the expected image easy to identify. Playwright’s screenshot assertion and baseline behavior are described in its visual comparisons documentation.
Create and review the baseline
Run the test with npx playwright test. On its first execution, Playwright generates the reference screenshot rather than comparing against an existing one. It stores snapshots in a directory associated with the test file; the generated path depends on the test file and project configuration.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Inspect the generated image and confirm it shows the intended page state.
- Commit the screenshot with the test code so other developers and CI compare against the same reference.
- On later runs, inspect any reported image diff. A changed screenshot can indicate a real UI regression, an intentional design change, or rendering differences between environments.
Do not accept a changed baseline just to make a failing test pass. First establish why the image changed; then update the reference only when the new appearance is expected.
Update snapshots after an intentional design change
When a reviewed UI change should become the new expected appearance, run:
npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Review the resulting image files and the source diff, then commit them together. This command updates expected snapshots; it does not determine whether the visual change is correct. Avoid running it indiscriminately across unrelated tests, since that can overwrite useful evidence of regressions.
Control sources of visual drift
Playwright cautions that screenshots can vary with host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Its guidance is to use the same environment for creating baselines and comparing them. In practice, align the baseline-generation environment with CI before loosening image comparisons.

Match operating system and browser
- Generate and review baselines in the same operating system used by the visual test job where possible.
- Keep the browser engine and version aligned. Playwright browser binaries are tied to Playwright versions, so use the CLI installation for the version installed in the project.
- If local and CI images differ, compare their OS, browser version, settings, and headless execution before treating the discrepancy as an application bug.
Playwright supports Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, and branded Chrome and Edge configurations. The exact browser selected depends on your project configuration; make sure the browser used for the baseline is the one the test actually launches.
Make page content stable
Visual assertions are most useful when the page reaches a repeatable state. Tests can otherwise capture different content because of changing data, rotating banners, animations, or asynchronous rendering. Control those sources in the application or test setup where practical, and wait for the relevant page state before taking the screenshot. For a volatile element that cannot be made deterministic, consider a narrowly scoped stylesheet filter rather than masking differences across the whole page.
Choose comparison options deliberately
Playwright documents maxDiffPixels for setting the maximum number of differing pixels and stylePath for applying a stylesheet that filters or hides dynamic elements during capture. Use either only after checking environment consistency and inspecting the diff.
Allow a limited number of differing pixels
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png', {
maxDiffPixels: 100,
});
The value is an example threshold, not a generally safe setting. Raising it can make harmless rendering noise less disruptive, but it can also allow a genuine visual defect to pass. Choose a small, justified allowance based on the page and review the resulting diffs.

Hide a specifically volatile element
Provide a stylesheet through stylePath when a known dynamic element should not affect the comparison. For example, a project stylesheet could hide a timestamp or rotating promotion while leaving the rest of the page under comparison. Keep the rule as targeted as possible; hiding a large region weakens what the test verifies.

For non-image snapshots, Playwright also offers toMatchSnapshot() to compare text or arbitrary binary data. That is a separate assertion type; use toHaveScreenshot() for page screenshot comparisons.
Install matching browsers
Installing the Playwright package does not necessarily install the browser binaries and operating-system dependencies needed to run it. Each Playwright version expects specific browser binaries. Use the Playwright CLI for the version in your project, as explained in the browser installation documentation.
npx playwright install
npx playwright install-deps
npx playwright install --with-deps chromium
The commands serve different needs: install browser binaries, install system dependencies, or install Chromium together with dependencies. Choose the one suited to your environment; Linux CI commonly needs OS dependencies as well as the browser.
Run screenshot tests in CI
Playwright’s documented CI sequence is to install locked project dependencies, install browsers and dependencies, then run the tests. For an npm project, the basic commands are:

- CURVED FOR ENHANCED ENGAGEMENT: An immersive viewing experience with a curved monitor that wraps more closely around your field of vision; It creates a wider view, enhancing depth perception and minimizing peripheral distraction
- SMOOTH PERFORMANCE FOR SEAMLESS CONTENT: Stay in the action when playing games, watching videos, or working on creative projects; The 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur so you don't miss a thing in fast-paced moments¹
- MORE GAMING POWER: Gain the edge with optimizable game settings; Color and image contrast can be adjusted to see scenes more vividly and spot enemies hiding in the dark; Game Mode adjusts any game to fill the screen so you can view every detail²
- KEEP IT EASY ON THE EYES: Care for your eyes and stay comfortable, even during long sessions; Advanced eye comfort technology certified by TÜV reduces eye strain by minimizing blue light and reducing irritating screen flicker²
- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
npm ci
npx playwright install --with-deps
npx playwright test
Use a CI image and browser installation that match the environment used to generate baselines. Playwright recommends one worker in CI as a stability-oriented starting point; it can reduce resource contention but may take longer than parallel execution.
// playwright.config.ts
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
workers: process.env.CI ? 1 : undefined,
});
Once the suite is stable, capable self-hosted environments can use parallel workers, and sharding can distribute tests across jobs. Browser caching is not automatically faster: Playwright notes that restoring a cache can take as long as downloading browsers, and Linux system dependencies still need installation.

The first run says the screenshot does not exist
This is the normal baseline-creation step for a new screenshot assertion. Inspect the generated image, commit it if it represents the intended state, and rerun the test to exercise comparison.
A test fails after a visual change
Open the actual, expected, and diff images. Decide whether the change is a regression or an intentional UI update. For an approved change, run npx playwright test --update-snapshots, review the new reference, and commit it.

It passes locally but fails in CI
Check for mismatched OS, browser binary or version, settings, hardware conditions, or headless mode. Align the environments first. If the application content itself is changing between runs, make that state deterministic or filter only the known volatile element.
The browser will not launch in CI
Confirm the browser binaries for the installed Playwright version are present. Install them with npx playwright install; on systems missing libraries, install dependencies with npx playwright install-deps or use npx playwright install --with-deps chromium for Chromium.
Small rendering noise causes failures
First verify that the environment is aligned and inspect the image diff. If a small, understood difference remains, use a narrowly chosen maxDiffPixels allowance or a stylePath rule for a specific dynamic element. A broad threshold or stylesheet can hide real UI regressions.
