To compare an entire page in Playwright Test, use await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({ fullPage: true }). Playwright creates a reference screenshot on the first run; later runs compare the captured page with that baseline. For an image file without a baseline assertion, use await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true }).
Capture and compare a full page with Playwright Test
toHaveScreenshot() is the visual assertion for Playwright Test. It captures the page and checks it against a reference image maintained with the test. The assertion waits until two consecutive screenshots match, then compares the latest capture with the expected image. Playwright Visual comparisons explains the baseline workflow and PageAssertions documents the assertion options.
- Navigate to the page and set up the UI state the test should protect, including any needed login, data, or interaction.
- Assert the full page:
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({ fullPage: true }). WithoutfullPage: true, the assertion captures the visible viewport. - Run the test to generate its initial reference image. Inspect it, then commit the baseline alongside the test.
- On subsequent runs, inspect image diffs when the assertion fails. Update the baseline only when the visual change is intentional; Playwright documents
npx playwright test --update-snapshotsfor updating references.
For an explicit baseline filename, pass it as the first argument, for example await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('landing.png', { fullPage: true }). PNG is the default; a .webp filename stores a lossless WebP snapshot. Check the options against the version pinned in your project, since API details and defaults can change.
Save a full-page screenshot without a visual assertion
Use page.screenshot() when you need an image to save, attach to a report, or pass to another process rather than compare with a maintained baseline. This complete Playwright Test example saves a full-page PNG:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The standalone screenshot API also returns image bytes if you omit path and use the returned buffer. Its options include format, scale, quality, clipping, and full-page capture; consult the official Page API for details and constraints. The assertion route is specific to the Playwright Test runner, while page.screenshot() can be used to produce an image independently of a baseline assertion.
Make visual diffs stable and useful
Keep the rendering environment consistent
Operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendered pixels. Playwright’s guidance is: “For consistent screenshots, run tests in the same environment where the baseline screenshots were generated.” If your projects intentionally cover different browsers or platforms, maintain project-specific baselines rather than expecting every environment to match one image. See Playwright’s visual comparison guidance.
Control dynamic content carefully
The screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive page captures to match, which helps with capture instability but does not make changing content deterministic. Its options include disabling animations, hiding the caret, and masking selected locators. A mask covers the matched element’s bounds with a pink box by default. This can isolate volatile content such as timestamps or avatars, but the masked pixels no longer verify the underlying element’s appearance. Use masks only where ignoring that region is acceptable.

A custom stylesheet through stylePath can hide volatile elements or normalize content for capture. Prefer a targeted rule that controls only irrelevant variability; hiding broad page regions may conceal regressions the test is meant to catch.
Choose a deliberate difference tolerance
maxDiffPixels permits a specified number of differing pixels. Related comparison settings can express sensitivity in other ways, including a ratio or color threshold. A permissive threshold can allow meaningful changes through; an overly strict one can fail on insignificant rendering noise. Set tolerances based on what the test must detect, and review failed diffs rather than automatically raising the limit. The visual comparison guide and PageAssertions API describe these controls.
Choose the right screenshot scope and output
| Need | Approach | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Protect the complete scrollable page against visual changes | expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({ fullPage: true }) |
Full-page baseline assertion |
| Protect only what is currently visible | expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() |
Viewport by default |
| Save an image or pass it elsewhere | page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true }) |
Standalone screenshot file |
| Focus on a component or bounded area | Use a locator screenshot or screenshot clipping options | A selected element or clipped region, rather than the full page |
Choose scope based on the regression you need to catch. A full-page capture sees changes below the fold, while a locator or clip can make a component-focused assertion easier to diagnose. Playwright’s Page API covers capture options.

Troubleshoot common visual-test failures
The first run creates or changes a snapshot
This is expected when no reference exists yet or when you explicitly update snapshots. Inspect the generated image before committing it; do not treat a newly generated baseline as proof that the page is correct.
The screenshot assertion fails after a browser or platform change
Compare the test environment with the one that produced the reference, including browser version and operating system. If distinct environments are intentional, create and maintain separate project baselines.
The diff changes between runs
Check for animations, blinking carets, dynamic text, asynchronously loaded content, or other variable UI. Wait for the intended application state, then consider disabling animations, hiding the caret, masking only nonessential regions, or using a targeted stylePath stylesheet.

A full-page test only checks the viewport
Set fullPage: true in the assertion options. It defaults to false, so omitting it leaves below-the-fold content out of the comparison.
An update command appears to accept an unintended visual change
Snapshot updates replace the expected reference. Review the diff first and run npx playwright test --update-snapshots only when the design change is intended; keep the resulting baseline under version control with the test.
