A 2026 comparison of 19 popular PlayStation games found that discounted PlayStation Store copies were cheapest for 10 games, used discs were cheapest for seven, and two were approximately tied. The Store’s normal, non-sale price was the most expensive option for 15 of the 19 games.
That makes the practical answer conditional: buy digitally when you can wait for a worthwhile sale, and consider a new or pre-owned disc when you want to play immediately or expect to resell it. The calculation must use the same game edition, local prices, delivery costs, any required disc drive, and a realistic resale value.

The short answer
- Cheapest digital route: wait for a PlayStation Store sale and compare the discounted price with a matching disc edition.
- Cheapest immediate route: a pre-owned disc often has the best chance, especially for a popular game with active resale demand.
- Lowest regular price: digital is usually not the winner at its standard Store price. In the 19-game 2026 sample, it was the most expensive option for 15 titles.
- Lowest net cost after playing: a disc can win if you sell it, but your result depends on demand, condition, timing, marketplace fees and postage.
- Important limitation: these findings came from a US-focused sample of 19 games. They do not tell you today’s price for a specific title in another country.
“Cheaper over time” therefore means more than the checkout price. It includes how long you are willing to wait, whether the copy can be resold, shipping and taxes, and whether your console needs additional hardware to read discs.
What you are actually comparing
Digital purchase
A digital comparison should use the current price for the same edition and included content on your local PlayStation Store. Record both the normal price and the sale price when a promotion is running. A discounted deluxe bundle is not a fair comparison with a standard disc containing less content.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Digital is simplest when you want immediate access without delivery or a trip to a retailer. Its price is also easy to check, but a sale may not be available when you want to play. The 2026 comparison found that the lowest Store discounts appeared only 13% to 33% of the time for the games studied, depending on the title. That is an observation from that sample, not a forecast for every game.
New disc
Use a new disc with the same edition, bonuses and upgrade entitlement as the digital listing. A launch disc may cost more than a later sale, but it can retain value while the game remains in demand. Include delivery and tax in the total.
Pre-owned disc
Used PS5 games can have the lowest upfront price, but compare the exact release, condition, shipping charge and seller return policy. Check whether the listing is for the complete game rather than a special edition whose extra content was supplied as a one-time code. The disc may still work while an expired code does not provide the advertised bonus.
Resale value
Only discs can normally be sold as a physical item after you finish. Subtract a conservative estimate of your eventual proceeds, not the seller’s asking price. Demand, disc and case condition, marketplace fees, postage and the time of sale all affect what you actually receive. There is no universal resale percentage that can be applied to every title.
What the 2026 comparison found
Ars Technica’s 2026 analysis compared PlayStation Store best-sellers with physical prices for 19 games. Its physical checks used Amazon new-disc listings, GameStop pre-owned listings and completed eBay sales that included shipping. For some titles, the comparison adjusted for downloadable content and PS4-to-PS5 upgrade costs so that the editions were more equivalent.

| Measure | Result in the 19-game sample | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Store standard price was the most expensive | 15 of 19 games | Do not assume the normal digital price beats a disc. |
| Store sale price was the cheapest | 10 of 19 games | Digital can win when you are able to wait for a promotion. |
| Used disc was the cheapest | 7 of 19 games | Pre-owned pricing can undercut even discounted digital. |
| Approximately tied with discounted digital | 2 games | Small differences may not justify waiting, delivery or resale effort. |
| Observed availability of the lowest Store discount | 13%–33% of the time, depending on the game | Sale timing varies; the figure is not a guarantee of future promotions. |
The sample is useful for understanding the trade-off, not for choosing a particular game today. It covered popular titles rather than a random census of every PlayStation release, and its physical prices came from US retailers and marketplaces. Prices in other countries, currencies and tax systems can produce a different result.
Why digital sales can be cheaper
Promotions change the ranking
The Store’s regular price and its sale price are effectively two different buying options. A title that is poor value digitally at full price may become the cheapest option during a promotion. If you can wait months, set a target price and check the Store during recurring sales rather than paying the standard amount.
Waiting has a real cost
Waiting is only economical if the game’s delayed enjoyment is acceptable. A new release that you want to play with friends, avoid spoilers for, or finish during a holiday may be worth buying at a higher price. Treat the time cost as a decision factor instead of pretending every buyer can wait indefinitely.
Match the content
Compare standard with standard, deluxe with deluxe, and the same DLC, season pass or upgrade entitlement. A digital bundle can look expensive until its included content is priced separately; conversely, a cheap disc may omit downloadable extras. The 2026 analysis made these adjustments for some comparisons, which is why a simple headline price can be misleading.
Why discs can be cheaper over time
Pre-owned pricing responds quickly
When many owners finish a game, used listings can fall faster than the Store’s standard price. That creates an opportunity for buyers who are comfortable with a previously owned copy and who verify the listing’s condition and contents.

Resale lowers net cost
Suppose a disc costs more at checkout than a digital sale but can later be sold locally with low fees. The relevant figure is the purchase price plus delivery and tax, minus the money you realistically expect to keep from the sale. A disc held for months may be worth less by the time you list it, while a high-demand title may retain value. Use completed-sale evidence for similar listings, not optimistic unsold advertisements.

Physical ownership has practical trade-offs
You must store the disc, keep it in usable condition and insert it when you want to play. A damaged disc, missing case or seller with a restrictive return policy can erase an apparent saving. Physical retailers also have different rules, so read the policy before opening a sealed game if a return might be necessary.
A worksheet for your own game
Use local currency and record prices on the same day. This avoids comparing a current digital promotion with an old physical listing.
- Identify the exact product. Write down the platform, edition, included DLC, language or region requirements and whether a PS4-to-PS5 upgrade is included.
- Record digital prices. Note the current Store price and the normal price if a sale is running. Choose the sale figure only if waiting for that kind of promotion is acceptable.
- Record physical prices. Capture at least one new and one pre-owned listing for the same edition. Add shipping, tax and any buyer protection or marketplace fee.
- Check hardware. If the console has no disc drive, include the cost of a compatible drive only when you actually need to buy one. If you already own a drive, do not charge its sunk cost again for every game.
- Estimate resale proceeds. Look at completed sales for the same edition and condition. Subtract selling fees, postage, packaging and a safety margin for a slower sale.
- Apply the formulas. Digital net cost equals the matching Store price. Disc net cost equals the matching disc price plus delivery and tax, plus any required incremental disc-drive cost, minus realistic resale proceeds.
- Decide with the time factor. If the discounted digital price is lower but may require months of waiting, decide whether that delay is worth the saving.
Do not claim a universal break-even point. It changes with the game, country, retailer, console model and resale market.
Which option fits your buying situation?
| Your situation | Usually worth checking first | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want to play immediately | Pre-owned or new disc, then the current Store price | A future sale has no value if waiting defeats the purpose. |
| You can wait for a promotion | Store sale price | The 2026 sample found discounted digital was cheapest for 10 of 19 games. |
| You finish games quickly and sell them | New or used disc | Resale can reduce the disc’s net cost. |
| You keep games permanently and dislike handling discs | Digital, but compare sale and regular prices | Convenience may justify a higher price when there is no resale plan. |
| You own a disc-free console | Compare digital with disc plus a compatible drive | The hardware purchase can outweigh savings on one or two games. |
| You are buying a special edition | Match the included content before choosing a format | Different bundles can make a headline price comparison invalid. |
Regional prices and availability
Use the Store region attached to your account and retailers that deliver to your address. Currency conversion alone does not reveal the final cost because taxes, shipping and local promotions differ.

PSPrices reported tracking 67 PlayStation Store regions and 11,797 games on a page updated October 13, 2026. That is third-party tracker coverage, not an official Sony statistic and not permission to shop every region. Use regional tracking as a way to spot historical price movement, then verify the live price in your own Store.
Physical availability can also change independently of digital availability. A used copy may disappear after a seller’s stock is bought, while a digital sale can end without notice. Conversely, older discs may remain available in local shops after a Store promotion has ended.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Sony’s 2028 announcement means
In a July 1, 2026 PlayStation Blog announcement, Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications senior director Sid Shuman wrote: “physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” Sony said games already released, and games releasing before January 2028 in disc format, are unaffected. It also said new games after the change will be offered digitally through PlayStation Store and retailers.
Sony separately said, “We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store.” That is Sony’s stated plan as of the announcement, not proof that digital prices will rise or fall in a particular way. It does mean future physical supply for new releases is an important availability consideration, while existing discs and pre-owned markets are not announced to stop functioning.
Refunds and returns can affect the risk
US PlayStation Store purchases
Sony’s US support guidance generally requires a refund request for a full game or DLC within 14 days and says the content must not have been downloaded or streamed, unless it is faulty. Check the current policy before purchasing because eligibility depends on those conditions.

Physical purchases
PlayStation Direct has a separate US physical-goods policy stating that opened or unsealed physical disc games are not refundable under that policy unless faulty, covered by a warranty claim, or required by law. That policy applies to PlayStation Direct purchases, not automatically to other retailers. Local consumer law may provide additional rights.
Do not assume that either format is always returnable. Confirm the seller’s policy, especially for opened games, marketplace listings and digital content that has already been downloaded.
Common mistakes that reverse the result
- Comparing different editions: A deluxe digital bundle and a standard disc are not equivalent.
- Ignoring DLC or upgrades: Add the cost needed to reach the same content and PS5 version.
- Using an asking price as resale value: Base your estimate on completed sales after fees and postage.
- Forgetting shipping and tax: A cheap listing can lose its advantage at checkout.
- Charging a disc drive repeatedly: Include the hardware once when a disc-free console requires it; do not add it to games after the purchase.
- Treating a US sample as global: Verify prices in your country and account region.
- Assuming a sale will arrive on schedule: The observed 13%–33% discount availability varied by game and does not guarantee a future date.
- Overlooking condition and codes: Confirm that the disc, case and promised extras are present and usable.
- Confusing a retailer policy with a platform policy: PlayStation Store refunds, PlayStation Direct returns and independent retailer rules are separate.
A practical buying rule
For each game, make two totals: the digital price you can accept today and the disc price after all costs and likely resale. Choose the lower total only after deciding whether you can wait and whether the convenience of your preferred format has value. If the totals are close, buy the format that avoids your bigger risk: waiting for digital, a failed resale, delivery problems or the need to buy hardware.
Recommended Free Tools
The broad evidence favors a flexible strategy rather than loyalty to one format. In the 2026 19-game sample, sales made digital cheapest for a majority of the titles, while used discs won several comparisons and the regular Store price usually lost. Check the exact game, edition, region and timing every time.
