PlayStation Pulse Explore vs. Pulse 3D: Which PS5 headset is right for you?

The practical choice is earbuds versus an over-ear headset. Choose PULSE Explore wireless earbuds if you want a compact charging case, PlayStation Link, portability and simultaneous Link-plus-Bluetooth connections on supported devices. Choose the PULSE 3D wireless headset if you prefer over-ear headphones, need a 3.5 mm connection, or want its built-in game/chat and EQ controls.

Neither is a universal winner. Fit, isolation, control layout and whether you want earbuds resting in your ears or a headset around them matter more than the product names. Both can deliver PS5 3D Audio when the game supports it.

Quick decision: which one fits your setup?

If your priority is… Better match Why
Small, portable audio with a charging case PULSE Explore It is a pair of wireless earbuds supplied with a portable case.
An over-ear design with a headband PULSE 3D It uses plush earpads and a headband strap around the ears and head.
Using a PlayStation Link device and a phone at the same time PULSE Explore Sony says Explore can connect to a PS5 through its USB adapter and to a mobile phone over Bluetooth simultaneously. The feature is limited to certain Link devices.
A wired fallback PULSE 3D The headset has a 3.5 mm audio jack and includes a cable.
Physical game/chat balance, EQ presets and mic monitoring PULSE 3D Those controls are listed on its product page.
Manufacturer-rated battery time with a case-assisted total PULSE Explore Up to five hours per earbud charge, plus up to 10 additional hours from the included case.
A single manufacturer-rated wireless-play figure PULSE 3D Sony lists up to 12 hours; the instruction manual specifies testing at mid volume.

These are feature and design differences, not a ranking of sound, comfort, microphone quality or value. The available official specifications do not establish that one model sounds better or is more comfortable for every user.

Earbuds versus over-ear headphones

PULSE Explore: compact earbuds

PULSE Explore consists of two wireless earbuds and a charging case. The case is useful when you carry the earbuds between a PS5, another compatible device and a phone, because the buds do not need to remain attached to a full-size headset. The earbud form also takes less physical space in a bag than an over-ear headset.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That compactness comes with an individual-ear fit. Your choice of earbud style should therefore start with whether you like in-ear products and whether you can keep two separate earpieces positioned securely during long sessions. The product information documents the form factor and controls, but it does not provide a universal comfort result; ear shape and personal preference decide that.

PULSE 3D: a conventional over-ear headset

PULSE 3D places plush earpads over the ears and uses a headband strap. It is the more familiar headset shape for players who prefer not to insert earbuds. The larger design gives you a single unit to put on and remove, while the headband and earpad contact points determine how it feels on your head.

Sony describes the headset as tuned for PS5 3D Audio, but that statement is a manufacturer description rather than an independent head-to-head sound test. The headset’s physical design may suit you better than earbuds, but no specification can predict that for every head or ear.

How each model connects to PS5 and other devices

PULSE Explore and PlayStation Link

Explore includes a PlayStation Link USB adapter. With the adapter connected to a PS5, the earbuds use the console’s Link connection. Sony describes PlayStation Link as “a technology that provides lossless, wireless connection” on its support page: PlayStation Link device support. “Lossless” is Sony’s description of the technology, not an independent measurement of comparative audio quality.

Explore also supports Bluetooth. PlayStation says the earbuds can connect to a PS5 through the USB adapter and to a mobile phone by Bluetooth at the same time. That lets phone audio remain available while you use the console connection, provided both devices and the relevant Link feature are supported.

Do not generalize simultaneous connections to every PlayStation Link product. Sony limits the Link-plus-Bluetooth behavior to certain Link audio devices. Explore is the model in this comparison for which PlayStation explicitly documents that simultaneous use.

PULSE 3D and its wireless adapter

PULSE 3D includes a wireless adapter for PS5, PS4 and compatible Windows and macOS computers. The adapter is the normal wireless route for those devices; the product page does not list Bluetooth as a connection method for this headset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The headset also has a 3.5 mm audio jack and cable. That matters if you want a wired connection to a compatible controller, computer or other audio source, or if you need an alternative when the wireless adapter cannot be used. Explore’s listed product information does not include a 3.5 mm input.

Setup steps for PULSE Explore

  1. Charge the earbuds and their case before a long session. Explore’s runtime figures assume the earbuds and case are used as specified by Sony.
  2. Plug the included PlayStation Link USB adapter into the PS5.
  3. Power on the earbuds and complete the console pairing process indicated for the Link adapter.
  4. For phone audio, pair the earbuds with the phone over Bluetooth using the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
  5. If you use both connections, keep the PS5 Link connection and the phone’s Bluetooth connection active. The simultaneous feature applies only to supported Link devices and does not mean every Bluetooth function is available through every PS5 menu.

Explore’s PlayStation Link settings can be customized through the PS5 sound controls that Sony provides for compatible Link devices. The exact options can depend on the console software and connected device.

Setup steps for PULSE 3D

  1. Insert the included wireless adapter into a PS5, PS4 or compatible Windows/macOS computer.
  2. Turn on the headset and pair it with the adapter according to the headset’s setup instructions.
  3. Use the headset’s controls for master volume, microphone mute, game/chat balance and microphone monitoring.
  4. Select a PS5 EQ preset when you want one of Sony’s listed equalizer profiles.
  5. Connect the supplied 3.5 mm cable when you want wired audio instead of the wireless adapter.

The adapter-based setup is straightforward for a single console or computer, but it is different from Explore’s Link-plus-Bluetooth workflow. Decide whether you need phone integration before choosing between them.

Controls, microphones and sound features

Feature PULSE Explore PULSE 3D
Microphones Two hidden integrated microphones; Sony describes microphone noise rejection. Dual built-in noise-cancelling microphones.
On-device controls Easy-access volume buttons are listed. Master volume, microphone mute, game/chat balance and mic monitoring controls are listed.
PS5 sound adjustment Sony describes customizable PS5 sound settings through the PlayStation Link system. PS5 EQ presets are listed.
Wired audio No 3.5 mm input is listed in the reviewed product information. 3.5 mm jack and cable are listed.

Both designs hide their microphones rather than using a long boom. That can keep the exterior less obtrusive, but the documented specifications do not prove which microphone produces clearer speech in a real party chat. Room noise, microphone position, console settings and the other person’s hearing device all affect the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Similarly, the presence of EQ controls on PULSE 3D does not mean it sounds better by default. It means you have listed presets to adjust on PS5. Explore’s listed advantage is integration with PlayStation Link settings rather than a published comparative frequency result.

Battery claims: compare the measurement, not just the number

Model Published figure How to interpret it
PULSE Explore Up to 5 hours per earbud charge, plus up to 10 additional hours through the included charging case. The first number is an earbud-charge claim; the second is extra case-provided time. Both are manufacturer specifications from PlayStation’s product page, not an independent runtime test.
PULSE 3D Up to 12 hours of wireless play. Sony’s instruction manual qualifies the figure as up to 12 hours at mid volume. The manual was published in 2020, and actual time varies with operating conditions.

Explore’s “up to 15 hours” implied total (five hours in the earbuds plus up to 10 more from the case) should not be treated as a direct laboratory comparison with PULSE 3D’s 12-hour headset figure. Explore’s total includes recharges from a case; PULSE 3D’s figure describes wireless play from the headset. Volume, connection behavior, microphone use and battery condition can change real-world runtime for either product.

If you routinely play in sessions shorter than five hours and return the earbuds to their case between sessions, Explore’s charging workflow may fit your habits. If you prefer one headset that you charge and then use for a listed up-to-12-hour wireless period at mid volume, PULSE 3D presents the simpler specification. Neither figure guarantees a particular number of hours in your setup.

3D Audio: the game must support it

Both products support PS5 3D Audio in compatible games. PULSE 3D’s product page says the headset “has been specifically tuned to deliver the 3D Audio made possible by the PlayStation®5 console.” That is Sony’s promotional product statement. Explore’s product information also lists 3D Audio support for compatible PS5 games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A headset cannot add a game feature that the game does not implement. If a title does not support PS5 3D Audio, buying either model will not create spatial effects in that title. Check the game’s own audio options and the console’s current sound settings when you are troubleshooting missing 3D positioning.

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

Because both are compatible with the feature, 3D Audio support alone is not a deciding advantage. The useful question is which physical design and connection method you will actually use with the supported games you play.

Choose PULSE Explore when these situations describe you

  • You specifically want earbuds. Explore is the only one of the two that uses two separate in-ear pieces and a charging case.
  • You carry audio between locations. The case is a compact way to store and recharge both earbuds.
  • You want PS5 and phone audio available together. PlayStation documents simultaneous Link and Bluetooth connections for Explore, subject to supported-device limits.
  • You plan to use PlayStation Link settings. Explore includes the Link USB adapter and supports Sony’s compatible Link controls.
  • You do not need a wired 3.5 mm input. Explore’s listed product information does not include one, so choose it only if wireless connections cover your devices.

Choose PULSE 3D when these situations describe you

  • You prefer over-ear headphones. Its earpads and headband strap provide the conventional headset format.
  • You need a cable option. The 3.5 mm jack and supplied cable provide a wired route that Explore’s listed specifications do not provide.
  • You want physical game/chat controls. PULSE 3D lists game/chat balance, master volume, mic mute and mic monitoring controls.
  • You want PS5 EQ presets. Those presets are listed for PULSE 3D.
  • You use PS4 or a compatible Windows/macOS computer as well as PS5. Sony lists the included wireless adapter for those platforms.
  • You prefer one headset rather than two separate earbuds. The over-ear format is a single wearable unit, though its fit still depends on your head and ears.

What the published specifications do not settle

Do not choose based on an assumed sound-quality champion. The official product pages describe features and claimed capabilities, but they do not provide an independently measured, head-to-head result that proves one has better frequency response, imaging or bass.

The same caution applies to comfort, microphone clarity and value. The shape descriptions can help you identify your likely preference, but they cannot predict how a particular earbud seal, earpad or headband will feel after hours. A comparison page from RTINGS frames the central decision similarly: preference mostly depends on what type of headphones you want. See its comparison for that framing and its own testing methodology: Sony PULSE Explore Truly Wireless vs PULSE 3D Wireless.

There is also no established market-size statistic, adoption rate or survey result in the cited product material that would justify saying one model is the popular or best-value choice. Treat any such claim elsewhere as a separate piece of evidence, not as a consequence of the feature lists here.

Compatibility checklist before you buy

  • PS5: Both models support wireless PS5 use; Explore uses its included PlayStation Link USB adapter, while PULSE 3D uses its included wireless adapter.
  • PS4: PULSE 3D’s product page lists the included adapter for PS4. Explore’s cited product information is focused on PS5 and does not establish the same PS4 support.
  • Windows and macOS: PULSE 3D’s adapter is listed as compatible with Windows and macOS computers. Explore’s cited pages do not provide an equivalent blanket computer-compatibility statement.
  • Mobile phone: Explore supports Bluetooth phone connection, including simultaneous use with a PS5 Link connection as documented by PlayStation. PULSE 3D’s listed connection methods do not include Bluetooth phone pairing.
  • Wired source: PULSE 3D has a 3.5 mm jack and cable. No 3.5 mm input is listed for Explore.
  • Additional Link adapters: PlayStation says additional adapters can be purchased for compatible-device expansion. Explore already includes one; confirm the exact compatibility of any extra adapter before purchase.

2026 product-line update

On September 15, 2026, PlayStation announced additional PS5 audio products, including the PlayStation Pulse and Pulse Edge wireless headsets, in a PlayStation Blog announcement. That announcement said more details, including pricing and launch timing, would come later. It does not provide a reason to assume either PULSE Explore or PULSE 3D has been replaced, nor does it establish current regional availability.

Prices and regional availability

Current prices, discounts and stock vary by country and retailer. The specifications above do not establish a current retail price, so check the PlayStation store or a retailer in your region immediately before buying. Compare the complete package—earbuds plus case and adapter for Explore, or headset, adapter and cable for PULSE 3D—rather than comparing an isolated sale price from a different market.

Bottom line

Pick PULSE Explore if the earbud form, charging case, PlayStation Link and simultaneous phone connection solve a problem you actually have. Pick PULSE 3D if an over-ear fit, a 3.5 mm fallback, PS5 EQ and game/chat controls or broad adapter compatibility matter more. Both can provide PS5 3D Audio in games that support it; neither product’s feature list can decide which shape will feel or sound best to you.
