PlayStation Portal is a real remote-play device that streams games from a PS5, with a separate eligible cloud-streaming option. A different PlayStation handheld is only the subject of a Bloomberg report, not an announced product. The key potential difference is whether a future device could run games locally—but that has not been confirmed. Its specifications, price and release date are unknown, so there is no reliable basis for comparing it as a finished product or deciding to wait for one.
Is PlayStation Portal a real handheld console?
Portal is a real PlayStation device, but it is not documented as a standalone console that installs and runs games locally. Sony describes it as a Remote Player: it streams compatible games installed on a paired PS5 over Wi-Fi. Sony’s product page lists an 8-inch LCD with 1080p resolution and support for up to 60 frames per second. These are Sony’s published capabilities, not independent performance test results. Remote Play requires a broadband connection and a paired PS5 that is powered on or in Rest Mode. Sony says a minimum 5 Mbps connection is needed and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. Actual streaming quality depends on the network connection.
Portal has two streaming paths
- PS5 Remote Play: Streams compatible games installed on the user’s paired PS5. The console must be available and connected.
- Cloud streaming: Sony also documents streaming a selection of games from the PlayStation Plus Premium Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, plus select digital PS5 games in a user’s library. This mode does not require the user’s PS5 to be powered on. Game eligibility and service terms apply.
Cloud streaming gives Portal a use case without an active PS5 session, but it is still streaming—not evidence that Portal runs games locally. Sony’s Portal updates list a 1080p High Quality mode and user-experience refinements dated March 17, 2026. Sony’s PlayStation Blog Portal updates

What has been reported about a new PlayStation handheld?
Bloomberg reported on November 25, 2024, citing unnamed people familiar with development, that Sony was in the early stages of developing a portable console intended to play PS5 games on the move. Those sources said it was likely years away and that Sony might decide not to release it. That is a report about a possible project, not a Sony product announcement. Ars Technica also described the reported device as a fully portable console, contrasting it with Portal’s streaming design, but its account relies on Bloomberg’s reporting rather than independent confirmation. Ars Technica’s coverage

In particular, “intended to play PS5 games on the move” does not confirm that games would run locally on the device; how games would be delivered is unknown.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will a new PlayStation handheld play games natively?
That is not known. Bloomberg’s report describes a portable console intended to play PS5 games on the move, but it does not establish that the games would run on the device itself. A future handheld could conceivably differ from Portal through local gameplay, but that remains a possibility, not a confirmed feature. There is no supported basis yet for claims about its hardware, library, offline use or compatibility.

Waiting means accepting uncertainty
Waiting could make sense if your requirement is a standalone device that runs games locally and you are comfortable with no confirmed product, launch window or specifications. The Bloomberg report specifically leaves open the possibility that Sony will cancel the project. There is no reliable way to compare the rumored device’s value or capabilities with Portal yet.
Quick Recap
Use the right decision criteria
- Local play versus streaming: Portal’s documented play modes stream games; the rumored handheld’s local-play capability is unconfirmed.
- Connection and PS5 dependence: Portal Remote Play requires a paired PS5 and broadband; its eligible cloud mode removes the need for the console to be powered on but still depends on cloud streaming.
- Library and service: Check whether the specific games you want are compatible with Remote Play or eligible for cloud streaming.
- Timing: Portal is an announced product; the separate handheld has no verified launch date and may never reach release.
