The best PlayStation Portal alternative for most people is a compatible iPhone or Android phone paired with a supported mobile controller. Sony’s PS Remote Play app streams games from your PS5 or PS4 to the phone, and the setup is usually cheaper and more compact than buying a dedicated handheld. The phone’s operating system, the controller edition and connector, your console settings, and your network all determine whether it works well.
Dedicated Android handhelds and handheld PCs are useful when you want a built-in screen or access to other game libraries, but their PlayStation compatibility is not universal. A separate change to the baseline is that PlayStation Portal now supports cloud streaming for select PS5 games with PlayStation Plus Premium in supported regions. That feature can work without a PS5 console connection, but it has account, catalog and bandwidth limits.

What can you use instead of a PlayStation Portal for handheld remote play?
Your practical choices fall into three categories:
- Phone plus a supported mobile controller: Use Sony’s PS Remote Play app to stream from a PS5 or PS4. This is the lowest-cost route if you already own a suitable phone.
- Dedicated Android gaming handheld: Use an integrated screen and controls, while checking the exact model’s current PlayStation app and controller support before buying.
- Handheld PC or Steam Link client: Stream a Steam library from a computer. This is useful for PC gaming, but Steam Remote Play is not proof of official Sony PS Remote Play support on a handheld PC.
Choose by answering five questions: Do you own a PS5 or PS4? Do you want PlayStation only or several gaming ecosystems? Do you already own a compatible phone or gaming PC? What is the total cost of the controller or handheld? And how reliable is the network where you will play?

Option 1: Turn a phone into a PlayStation handheld
Sony’s official PS Remote Play app runs on compatible iPhone, iPad and Android devices. It connects to a PS5 or PS4 over the internet or a local network and displays the console’s game output on the phone. A mobile controller gives you physical sticks, triggers and buttons; supported touch controls can work for some games when you do not have one.

What you need
- A PS5 or PS4 connected to broadband and signed in to the PlayStation account you will use for Remote Play.
- A compatible iPhone, iPad or Android phone with the free PS Remote Play app installed.
- A compatible controller, unless the game and app support touch controls.
- A network connection that meets Sony’s minimum. Sony states at least 5 Mbps and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are stated thresholds, not a latency or smoothness guarantee.
- A compatible game. Titles requiring PlayStation VR, PS VR2 or peripherals beyond supported PlayStation controllers are excluded. Games that must be streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium cannot be launched through ordinary console Remote Play.
iPhone and iPad requirements
Sony lists iOS 14 or later for DualShock 4 over Bluetooth or touch controls. DualSense Bluetooth use requires iOS 14.5 or later. Sony also lists iPhone devices running iOS 15 or later as compatible with the Backbone One–PlayStation Edition. Check the individual iPhone or iPad model and its operating-system support before buying a controller.
Android requirements
Android 9 or later is required for touch controls, Android 10 or later for DualShock 4, and Android 12 or later for DualSense, according to Sony’s current support information. Android phones on Android 10 or later are listed as compatible with the Backbone One–PlayStation Edition. Backbone’s compatibility documentation identifies that PlayStation Edition as the supported Backbone model for Android PS Remote Play; other Backbone controllers are not yet recognized by Sony’s official Android app according to that documentation.
Pick the controller before the phone mount
A telescoping controller is only useful if its connector and physical opening fit your phone. The Backbone One family uses either USB-C or Lightning, depending on the model. Match the connector to the exact phone, and check whether your protective case must be removed. Do not assume that every phone size, case or controller edition is interchangeable.

Backbone describes its mobile controller as supporting PS Remote Play, Xbox and Steam uses, but console Remote Play still requires the relevant console. Cloud gaming and controller-compatible mobile games are separate use cases. On iOS, Backbone says multiple editions can work subject to the specific model and phone; on Android, use the PlayStation Edition when you need Sony’s official Android-app recognition.
Set up PS Remote Play on a phone
- Prepare the console: On the PS5 or PS4, sign in to the same PlayStation account you will use on the phone. Enable Remote Play in the console’s system settings. If you want to wake the PS5 from Rest Mode, enable the Rest Mode options that keep it connected to the internet and allow it to be turned on through the network.
- Install the app: Download the official PS Remote Play app for iOS, iPadOS or Android and sign in with the console account.
- Connect the controller: Pair a DualSense or DualShock 4 over Bluetooth where supported, or attach the compatible mobile controller to the phone. If using a Backbone controller on Android, use the PlayStation Edition identified in Backbone’s compatibility documentation.
- Start a console session: Select PS5 or PS4 in the app and let it search for the console. The first connection can take longer if the console is in Rest Mode or on another network.
- Test locally first: Try the phone while connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the console. This isolates account, pairing and console-setting problems before you add mobile-network variables.
- Test away from home: After the local session works, try a different Wi-Fi network or mobile data. A speed test above Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum does not guarantee low delay; upload quality from the home network, Wi-Fi interference, routing and congestion also matter.
Option 2: A dedicated Android gaming handheld
A dedicated handheld removes the need to attach a controller to your everyday phone and provides a permanent screen, controls and battery. It can be attractive if you play for long sessions, share your phone, or want Android games and other streaming services in one device.
However, “Android handheld” is not a compatibility standard. The device may have the right Android version but still lack the controller mapping, app distribution or input behavior Sony’s app expects. Verify all of the following for the exact model and current firmware:

- Whether the official PS Remote Play app installs from the device’s app store or through a supported method.
- Whether the built-in controls are recognized as a compatible gamepad by the app.
- Whether the handheld’s Android version meets Sony’s current requirement.
- Whether the manufacturer documents PlayStation Remote Play rather than only generic Android game streaming.
- Whether the screen, Wi-Fi hardware and battery suit the places where you intend to play.
Logitech G Cloud as an example category
Xbox has an official product listing for Logitech G Cloud, making it a reasonable example of a dedicated streaming handheld. That listing alone does not establish every current G Cloud service capability, particularly exact Sony PS Remote Play compatibility. Treat it as a dedicated-device option to investigate, not as a guaranteed PS5 replacement. Confirm current app and controller support for the model before purchase.
Option 3: Handheld PC and Steam Remote Play
If your main library is on a gaming computer, a handheld PC can stream it through Steam Remote Play. Valve describes Steam Remote Play as sending Steam games from a computer running Steam to supported devices, including phones, tablets, televisions and other PCs.
This route is fundamentally different from PS Remote Play. The host is a PC running Steam, not a PS5 or PS4. A handheld PC may be able to run other software, but the official Steam documentation does not establish Sony PS Remote Play support on Steam Deck or other handheld PCs. Buy this category for PC streaming and PC-native games, not on the assumption that it is an officially supported PlayStation handheld.
When a handheld PC makes sense
- You already own a gaming PC with the Steam games you want to stream.
- You want one device for local PC play and in-home streaming.
- You are comfortable troubleshooting a PC host, graphics settings and controller mappings.
- PlayStation compatibility is optional rather than the primary purchase reason.
Xbox Remote Play is a separate comparison, not a PlayStation solution
Xbox Remote Play streams games installed on an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One to compatible phones, tablets, PCs, smart TVs or VR headsets. It is relevant if your household owns Xbox hardware, but it does not let a PS5 owner stream PlayStation games.
Microsoft lists Android 6.0 or later, iOS 15.1 or later, and Windows 10 or 11 version 22H2 or later. You also need a Microsoft account with an Xbox profile and either 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data at 10 Mbps down, according to Xbox’s current Remote Play requirements. That 10 Mbps figure is a listed requirement, not a promise of a particular frame rate or latency.

Do not confuse Xbox Remote Play with Xbox Cloud Gaming. Remote Play uses the games installed on your own Xbox console. Cloud Gaming is a separate service that may require a subscription and does not depend on the games installed on your console.

PlayStation Portal’s cloud-streaming update changes the baseline
Portal is no longer limited to connecting back to a PS5. Sony’s November 5, 2025 announcement introduced cloud streaming for eligible users, and Sony’s support documentation describes select PS5 games that can be played without connecting to a PS5 through Remote Play.
Portal cloud-streaming requirements
- A PlayStation Portal.
- A PlayStation account with an active PlayStation Plus Premium membership.
- An adult account; child accounts are not listed as eligible for this feature.
- Broadband internet from a region where the feature is supported.
- A game included in the currently eligible PS5 cloud-streaming catalog.
Sony lists 5 Mbps to establish a cloud-streaming session, 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p. These figures apply to the cloud session and do not remove the account, region, subscription or catalog conditions. Availability changes over time and by region. The current description covers select PS5 games, not PS3 or PS4 games through this Portal cloud feature.
This update makes Portal more useful for Premium subscribers who do not want to leave a PS5 powered on for every session. It does not eliminate the phone alternative: a phone and controller can still be cheaper, can use a console you already own, and can work across more general mobile scenarios.

Sony’s minimum of 5 Mbps and recommendation of 15 Mbps describe internet throughput. Xbox lists 10 Mbps down on 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data. Portal cloud streaming lists separate thresholds for starting a session and for 720p or 1080p. None of these numbers predicts the delay between pressing a button and seeing the result.
Remote play is affected by the complete path between the handheld and the host or cloud service:
- Home upload capacity: Console streaming sends video outward from your home. A fast download plan does not compensate for weak or congested upload.
- Wi-Fi signal: Distance, walls and crowded channels can cause packet loss and sudden quality drops.
- Latency and jitter: A connection can pass a speed test yet feel sluggish if delay fluctuates.
- Other traffic: Backups, video calls and large downloads can compete with the stream.
- Mobile coverage: Cellular performance changes by location and tower congestion.
Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi when the handheld is close enough to the router, connect the console to the router by Ethernet where possible, pause heavy downloads during play, and test the exact room or travel location rather than relying on a plan’s advertised maximum.

Troubleshooting common failures
The app cannot find the console
- Confirm that the phone and console use the same PlayStation account.
- Check that Remote Play is enabled on the console.
- Wake the console and test on the same local network.
- If using Rest Mode, verify that the PS5 is allowed to stay connected and wake over the network.
- Restart the app, phone and console, then test again before changing router settings.
The controller works in menus but not in the game
Check whether the controller edition is officially supported for your phone operating system. On Android PS Remote Play, Backbone identifies the PlayStation Edition as the supported Backbone model. Also verify that the controller is connected through the intended USB-C, Lightning or Bluetooth path and that no other gamepad is taking focus.

Measure the connection at the place where you play, then reduce competing traffic and move closer to the router. If the home console is on weak Wi-Fi, connect it by Ethernet. Remember that exceeding 5 Mbps does not guarantee a stable session; packet loss and jitter can be the real cause.
A game will not start through Remote Play
Check whether it requires PlayStation VR, PS VR2 or an additional peripheral. Also check whether it is a title that must be streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium; Sony excludes that class from ordinary PS Remote Play.
A dedicated handheld cannot install or control the app
Look up the manufacturer’s current support for the exact model and Android version. A product page that promises generic cloud or Android gaming is not evidence of Sony PS Remote Play support. If the handheld is not documented as compatible, use a phone with a supported controller or choose a device with explicit PlayStation support.
How to choose without overspending
Choose a phone and controller when
- You already own an iPhone, iPad or Android phone meeting Sony’s version requirements.
- Your primary goal is streaming from your PS5 or PS4.
- You want a controller that can be removed so the phone remains a normal phone.
- You are willing to check connector, case and model compatibility before ordering.
Choose a dedicated Android handheld when
- You want a device permanently configured for gaming.
- You also use Android games or other streaming services.
- You have verified current PlayStation app and input support for the exact model.
- You value an integrated display and controls more than the lowest possible cost.
Choose a handheld PC when
- Your important games are in a Steam library hosted by a gaming PC.
- You want local PC play as well as Steam streaming.
- You do not need the purchase to be an officially supported PlayStation Remote Play device.
Stay with or buy Portal when
- You prefer a first-party PlayStation interface and controls.
- You have a PS5 for console Remote Play, or PlayStation Plus Premium and a supported region for cloud streaming.
- The eligible cloud catalog includes the games you actually play.
Final buying checklist
- Write down the source of your games: PS5, PS4, Xbox or PC.
- Check the phone or handheld operating-system version against the current official requirements.
- Match the controller connector and edition to the exact phone.
- Confirm whether the game needs VR or another unsupported peripheral.
- Test your home network from the intended playing location.
- For cloud streaming, verify Premium membership, adult-account status, region and game eligibility.
- For a dedicated Android handheld, verify model-specific PlayStation support rather than relying on a generic streaming claim.
For most PS5 owners, a compatible phone plus the correctly supported controller is the simplest Portal alternative. A dedicated handheld is worthwhile when its exact software and controls are confirmed. A handheld PC is the right answer for Steam streaming, while Portal cloud streaming is a separate first-party option for Premium subscribers with access to the eligible catalog.
