PlayStation Plus Premium is the better tier if your main goal is to try games before buying them. It is the only one of the two with Sony’s dedicated Game Trials, and it also adds the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming. Extra is the better-value choice when you are happy to evaluate games by downloading titles that are already in the Game Catalog. Neither tier guarantees a trial for every game, and prices, catalogs, trial availability, and streaming support vary by country and change over time.
Premium and Extra at a glance
The practical difference is not that Premium has a completely separate modern library. Both tiers include the Game Catalog, while Premium layers additional ways to sample and play games on top of Extra’s benefits.

How Premium lets you try games
Dedicated Game Trials
Premium’s Game Trials are the feature designed for the question “Can I play this before I buy it?” A participating game has a separate trial entitlement. You select the trial from its PlayStation Store listing, download or launch it according to the title’s support, and play for the period Sony or the publisher has assigned. The exact duration is title-specific; Sony does not promise that every Premium game has a trial or that all trials offer the same amount of time.

A trial is different from a normal Game Catalog download. The catalog is a rotating subscription library, whereas a trial is a limited evaluation period attached to an individual game. A game can be in the Game Catalog without offering a trial, and a trial can disappear when its promotion, territory or eligibility changes. Check the game’s current Store page while signed in to the account that holds Premium.
What happens when the trial ends
When the allowed trial time expires, the trial entitlement stops. If you purchase the game, your progress may carry over when the trial and full product use the same edition and save data; verify the edition shown on the Store page before relying on that outcome. A trial is not a permanent license and does not mean the game remains playable after canceling Premium.
Sony’s PlayStation Network terms say trials roll into paid subscriptions and that subscription prices may change. Read the renewal date, price and cancellation terms shown at checkout rather than assuming a trial is a one-time, non-renewing purchase.

Premium trial workflow
- Open the PlayStation Store on your PS5, PS4 or supported web interface and sign in to the account with Premium.
- Search for the exact game and confirm that the product page displays a Game Trial option. Do not assume that a catalog listing also has a trial.
- Read the trial duration, edition, age rating, territory notice and any purchase or renewal language shown on that page.
- Start the trial and note when the time limit begins. Some titles measure play time, while the Store’s current listing determines the applicable rule; follow the wording displayed for that game.
- If you decide to buy, use the same account and check that the purchase edition matches the trial edition before downloading additional content.
- Open your account’s subscription settings after starting any promotional offer and confirm the next billing date. Cancel renewal there if you do not want the membership to continue.
How Extra lets you evaluate games
Download from the Game Catalog
Extra does not include Premium’s dedicated Game Trials, but it includes the Game Catalog. You can download any currently available catalog title, install it, and play while your Extra membership remains active. For many readers, this is enough “try before you buy” access: if a game is in the catalog, you can often play substantially more than a short trial, provided you start before it leaves and have enough storage.

This method has a different risk profile from a trial. The game may leave the catalog with limited notice, and your access ends if the title is removed or your subscription expires. A catalog download is therefore useful for deciding whether to buy, but it is not ownership. If you later purchase the game, use the same account and compatible edition so that existing save data has the best chance of being recognized.
Extra’s best use case
Extra suits a player who chooses games from the rotating library rather than starting with a particular new release. It is especially practical when you are willing to download a game, play several sessions, and decide at your own pace. You avoid paying for Premium solely for the trial label, while retaining the broad modern catalog and the Essential-tier features.
Extra is less useful when the game you want is outside the catalog. In that situation, you cannot use Extra to create a trial entitlement; you would need a Premium Game Trial if that title offers one, a separately purchased copy, or another legitimate demo or test version supplied by the publisher.

Shared modern catalog
Extra and Premium share the Game Catalog. Sony describes Extra as providing hundreds of games with regular additions, but the exact count and lineup depend on country, platform, licensing and the date you check. Catalog entries can be added or removed, so a list viewed today is not a guarantee of availability next month.

Premium’s Classics Catalog
Premium adds the Classics Catalog, which is a separate reason to choose the higher tier. It can include supported titles from earlier PlayStation generations and selected remastered or re-released versions. The relevant question is not simply whether you want “more games”; it is whether the specific older games you want are present in your country’s Classics Catalog and playable on your device. Sony does not state that every classic title is available in every region.
For a player comparing a new release, the Classics Catalog may have no value. For someone exploring older series, historical exclusives or games that are difficult to find physically, it can make Premium’s additional benefits more useful even when no modern trial is available.
Cloud streaming: the convenience Premium adds
Supported devices and connection requirements
Sony describes cloud streaming as a Premium benefit available on PS4 and PS5 consoles as well as PC. Sony’s current guidance requires at least 5 Mbps for streaming, or 15 Mbps for 1080p. Those figures are minimum connection requirements, not a guarantee of perfect image quality or latency; Wi-Fi congestion, distance from the service and other household traffic still affect play.
Streaming selection is limited
Premium does not stream every game in the PlayStation library. Sony says only selected PS5, Game Catalog, Classics Catalog and free-to-play titles can be streamed. A title’s presence in the Game Catalog therefore does not by itself prove that its cloud version is available. Check the Store or PlayStation Plus page for the individual game and your country before relying on streaming.

When streaming helps with trying games
Streaming can remove a large download and let you test a supported game quickly, which is useful on a console with limited storage or a PC that cannot run the local version comfortably. It is less suitable for judging games where latency is critical, or for households whose connection regularly drops below Sony’s requirements. Downloading through Extra or Premium gives a more representative test of local performance, loading and image quality.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cost, renewal and regional availability
Sony’s pages do not provide one universal price for Premium or Extra. Membership prices, taxes, promotional offers, catalog lineups and trial availability vary by country and can change. Use the PlayStation Plus page and Store for your own country, and treat any price shown in an older article or a different region as historical or inapplicable.
Both memberships are recurring subscriptions unless you cancel renewal. Before confirming a purchase or trial, record the displayed renewal date and amount, then check the account’s subscription-management screen. Sony’s terms also allow subscription prices to change, so an introductory amount should not be treated as the permanent rate.
Which tier fits your way of trying games?
Choose Premium when a dedicated trial is essential
- You usually have one specific game in mind and want a formal, time-limited test before paying.
- You want access to the Classics Catalog as well as current catalog games.
- You will use cloud streaming on a supported PS4, PS5 or PC and have a connection that meets Sony’s requirements.
- You understand that trial availability is title-specific and are prepared to verify each game’s Store listing.
Choose Extra when catalog access is enough
- You are happy to browse and download games from the rotating Game Catalog.
- You prefer playing for multiple sessions rather than using a limited trial window.
- You do not need classic titles or cloud streaming.
- You want the lower tier and will buy games that leave the catalog only after deciding they are worth owning.
Neither tier is a guarantee for a particular game
If your decision depends on one named title, check three separate questions before subscribing: Is the title in your country’s Game Catalog? Does its Store page offer a Premium Game Trial? Is its edition eligible for cloud streaming on your device? A “yes” to one does not imply a “yes” to the others.
A practical pre-subscription checklist
- Write down the games you actually want to evaluate, rather than judging the membership by its headline library size.
- For each game, search your local PlayStation Store and note whether it shows Game Catalog access, a Game Trial, cloud streaming, or none of these.
- Check the platform and edition: PS4, PS5 and PC support can differ, and a PS5 version is not automatically streamable.
- Measure the connection you will use for streaming. Sony’s stated thresholds are 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps for 1080p; use a wired connection or a strong, uncongested Wi-Fi link when possible.
- Check available console storage before choosing downloads. A catalog game can be a large installation even when the membership itself is digital.
- Review the checkout screen for the current price, promotional period, renewal amount, billing date and cancellation terms.
- Set a reminder to reassess the catalog and your renewal before the next billing date, especially if you joined to test one game.
Common mistakes and fixes
“The game is in the catalog, so it must have a trial”
It does not. Extra’s catalog access and Premium’s Game Trials are separate entitlements. Open the game’s current Store page and look for the explicit trial option.
“Premium streams every Game Catalog title”
It does not. Streaming is limited to selected PS5, Game Catalog, Classics Catalog and free-to-play titles. Download the game or confirm its stream icon before planning a test session around it.
“A downloaded catalog game is mine to keep”
It is playable only while the title remains available and your membership is active. Purchase the game if you need permanent access, and do not wait until the catalog-removal date if the decision matters.
Recommended Free Tools
“A trial cannot renew my membership”
Sony’s terms state that trials roll into paid subscriptions. Check and cancel recurring billing in your PlayStation account if you do not want the next charge.
“The library count from launch is still current”
Launch figures are not a live catalog counter. Sony’s 2022 announcement described Extra as offering up to 400 PS4 and PS5 games and Premium as adding up to 340 additional games, but those were launch-positioning figures, not a current count. The announcement is archived at PlayStation Blog. Use your regional PlayStation Store for the current lineup.
Bottom line for game testing
Premium earns its place when the dedicated Game Trials, Classics Catalog or cloud streaming solve a problem you actually have. Extra already provides the modern Game Catalog, so it is the more efficient choice for players who can sample games by downloading catalog titles and do not need those Premium-only features. Make the decision from the specific games and devices you use in your country, not from a universal game count or an assumption that every catalog title has a trial.
