1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMonthly Games and the Game Catalog are separate PlayStation Plus benefits. Monthly Games are a changing set of titles that you must add to your library during the monthly offer; after that, you can download and play them while your membership remains active. The Game Catalog is a larger, rotating library for eligible plans: you choose a title while it is listed, but access ends if your membership ends or the title leaves the catalog.
Neither benefit is the same as buying a permanent game license. A download only puts the game files on your console; it does not override the subscription entitlement or a catalog removal date.

The difference at a glance
| Comparison | Monthly Games | Game Catalog |
|---|---|---|
| How a game enters your account | Add it to your library during its monthly offer period. This is often called claiming or redeeming, although PlayStation’s support instructions use the label “Monthly Games.” | Select it from the titles currently listed in the Game Catalog. |
| Eligible plans | Included with PlayStation Plus plans that provide Monthly Games. | Included with Extra and Premium on the US plan page; not included with Essential. |
| How long you can play | After you add the game, access continues while your PlayStation Plus membership is active. | Access continues only while your qualifying plan is active and the title remains in the catalog. |
| How the selection changes | A new selection is offered every calendar month. | The library rotates. Games can be added, and some have announced dates when they leave. |
| What happens after a membership ends | Games obtained through the subscription become unavailable until you reactivate an eligible membership. | Games become unavailable, and a title that has left the catalog remains unavailable even if it was downloaded. |
That last row is the practical distinction many people miss: adding a Monthly Game gives it a continuing subscription entitlement, while choosing a Game Catalog title gives you temporary access to a title in a service library.
How Monthly Games work
They are a monthly offer, not an automatic purchase
PlayStation adds Monthly Games every calendar month. During the offer period, open the Monthly Games area and add the titles to your account’s library. Once added, the games can be downloaded and played at no extra charge during an active PlayStation Plus membership. PlayStation Support describes them this way: “Monthly games are games available for you to download and play at no extra cost during your PlayStation Plus membership.”
#1 Best Overall
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
You do not have to download a Monthly Game immediately. Adding it to the library is the important step. If you miss the offer period, you generally cannot add that month’s selection later through the subscription benefit.
Adding a Monthly Game on a console
- Sign in to the PlayStation Network account that holds your PlayStation Plus membership.
- Open the PlayStation Plus section on your PS5 or PS4 and choose the Monthly Games area. The exact placement can change with system software and region.
- Open each title you want and add it to your library during the displayed offer period.
- Choose the download option when you want to install it, or return to your library later to download it.
On PS5 and PS4, the support instructions distinguish the Monthly Games area from the store’s normal purchase flow. If a game shows a price instead of the subscription option, verify that you are signed into the correct account, that the offer is still active, and that the title is available in your region.
Adding remotely from the web or PlayStation App
PlayStation also allows a member to initiate a remote download through a web browser or the PlayStation App. Use the account associated with the console, select the current Monthly Game, add it to your library, and choose the available remote-download command for a linked console. The console must be online and configured to accept remote downloads; otherwise, add the game to the library first and install it directly later.

A Monthly Game listed in your library is recorded as part of your PlayStation Plus entitlement. It is not a permanent purchase. If the membership expires, the game can remain visible in the library but will be locked until an eligible membership is active again. Renewing the membership restores access to a Monthly Game that you previously added, provided the game has not been removed from the service under the applicable terms.
How the Game Catalog works
Choose from what is available now
The Game Catalog is a rotating collection rather than a monthly claim list. Open the catalog, select a title that is currently offered, and download it if your plan and console support it. Most catalog titles can be downloaded. A title may also show a removal date, so check its listing before starting a long game or buying add-ons.
Rank #2
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
Downloading a catalog game does not reserve it. If PlayStation removes the title, the installed copy no longer has subscription authorization. You must either wait for the title to return, purchase the game separately, or use another entitlement that grants access.
Catalog additions and departures
PlayStation describes the US Game Catalog as containing “hundreds” of games. That is a broad product description, not a fixed count: the lineup, additions, removal dates and regional availability change. A game’s presence today is not a guarantee that it will remain through the length of your playthrough.
Recommended Free Tools
Unlike a Monthly Game, a catalog title does not need to be added during a particular monthly claim window. You can select it whenever it is listed. The trade-off is that its availability is conditional on both your membership and the title’s continued listing.
Catalog add-ons and downloadable content
Downloadable content (DLC) for a Game Catalog title follows the underlying game’s entitlement. If your membership ends or the base game leaves the catalog, access to associated DLC is lost as well. Access returns if you resubscribe with the required plan or purchase the base game, assuming the DLC remains compatible and available. Buying an expansion does not turn the catalog copy of the base game into a permanent license.
Which PlayStation Plus plan includes each benefit?
The following reflects the current US plan structure. PlayStation states that benefits, prices, catalogs and streaming availability can differ by country, so use your regional PlayStation plan and games pages for a purchase decision.
Rank #3

| US plan | Monthly Games | Game Catalog | Other relevant benefits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | Yes | No | Core PlayStation Plus benefits, including the monthly selection. |
| Extra | Yes | Yes | Essential benefits plus Game Catalog access. |
| Premium | Yes | Yes | Essential and Extra benefits, plus Classics Catalog, game trials and cloud streaming where supported. |
Do not assume that a plan name has identical benefits everywhere. A title, catalog or streaming feature shown on the US page may not be offered in another market, and the local price and billing terms can be different.

What happens when your membership changes?
If the subscription expires
Monthly Games obtained through the subscription become unavailable when the membership ends. They may still appear in your library, but the license check prevents play until you renew an eligible plan. The same loss of access applies to Game Catalog titles, with the additional condition that the title must still be in the catalog when you return.
If a catalog game leaves
A Game Catalog removal is independent of your personal download history. A title downloaded before its removal date does not become yours to keep. Once it leaves, the subscription entitlement no longer authorizes play. Re-downloading the files, restoring a console backup or moving the game to another drive cannot bypass that status.
If you buy the game
A separate purchase is a different license. If you buy a game after playing it through the catalog, the purchased entitlement can allow continued play even when the catalog listing ends, subject to the store’s regional availability and any edition or DLC differences. Check that you are buying the same platform and edition before deleting the installed copy.
Download versus streaming
Download and streaming are delivery methods, not ownership categories. A downloaded title remains governed by the Monthly Games or Game Catalog rules. Streaming avoids local installation but still requires an active entitlement and an eligible title.
Rank #4
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.

Who can stream
On the US plan page, Premium members can stream eligible Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles. Streaming is not universal access to every catalog game: eligibility varies by title, device and region. Extra members do not gain Premium streaming simply because a game appears in the Game Catalog.
Connection requirements
The official US support information lists a minimum 5 Mbps connection for game streaming and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. These are connection thresholds, not guarantees of perfect play. Wi-Fi interference, household traffic, latency, data caps and regional server availability can still affect image quality or responsiveness. Download the title when possible if you need stable offline access while your subscription and the title entitlement remain valid.
Current policy details that can change
PS4 additions from January 2026
The current US games page says PS4 games will be added only intermittently from January 2026. Treat that as a policy qualification, not a promise that a PS4 title will appear in any particular month or in every region. If you use a PS4, check the current local catalog and monthly selection rather than relying on an older list.
Regional lineups and dates
Catalog titles, Monthly Games, removal dates, plan benefits and prices are all volatile. A friend’s catalog in another country may not match yours, and a title’s end date can be announced after you begin playing. Before downloading a large game or purchasing DLC, open the listing on your own regional PlayStation store and note the platform, edition and any displayed end date.

Choose Monthly Games when you want a lasting subscription library
- Add every title you might reasonably play before the offer period closes.
- Use the library as a reminder of what you have added; you do not need to install everything immediately.
- Expect access to stop during a membership gap, then return when you reactivate the appropriate plan.
Choose the Game Catalog when you want breadth now
- Use the catalog to sample or finish games without buying each one.
- Check for a removal date before investing in a long campaign or purchasing DLC.
- Keep your save data, but do not assume the installed game will remain playable after removal.
Buy separately when permanence matters
- Purchase a title if you need access independent of PlayStation Plus.
- Confirm the exact console generation, edition and DLC compatibility.
- Remember that a subscription download and a store purchase can have different entitlements even when the files look identical.
Troubleshooting common access problems
A Monthly Game is locked
Check that the account is signed into the same PlayStation Network profile that added the game, then verify the membership status. Restore licenses from the console’s account or system settings if the membership is active but the entitlement is not recognized. A license refresh cannot restore access during an expired membership.
Best Value
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
A downloaded catalog game suddenly will not start
Look at the game’s current catalog listing. If its removal date has passed, the lock is expected rather than a corrupt installation. If it is still listed, verify that the account has Extra or Premium in your region, reconnect the console, and restore licenses.
DLC is missing
Confirm that the base game is still authorized and that the DLC belongs to the same regional edition. Catalog DLC is dependent on the underlying subscription game; renewing the qualifying membership or purchasing the base game can restore that entitlement when the add-on is still available.
Streaming is unavailable
Check that the title is marked streamable, the account has Premium where required, and the feature is supported in your region and on your device. Test the connection against the listed 5 Mbps minimum, and use a wired connection or download option when latency or bandwidth is unstable.
Storage planning for downloaded games
Downloaded catalog and Monthly Games can consume substantial console storage. A compatible M.2 SSD may expand PS5 storage, but storage capacity changes only where the files are kept. It does not extend a subscription, prevent a catalog removal or convert a Monthly Game into a purchase. Confirm current PS5 compatibility requirements before choosing a drive.
Bottom line
Add Monthly Games during their monthly offer and they remain available for as long as your PlayStation Plus membership is active. Select Game Catalog titles whenever you like, but expect access to end when your membership ends or PlayStation removes the title. For permanent access, buy the game separately; for flexible sampling, use the catalog and monitor its availability dates.
