For most trophy hunters, PlayStation Plus Extra is the sensible starting point. It includes the Game Catalog, which is also included with Premium, so paying more does not by itself improve trophy earning. Premium becomes worthwhile when you will use its Classics Catalog, a particular eligible game trial, or supported cloud streaming. Check your regional catalog, the game’s trophy list and its scheduled removal date before committing to a long completion run.
The short answer: choose Extra unless you need a Premium-only feature
Extra and Premium both provide the core PlayStation Plus benefits and access to Sony’s Game Catalog. Premium adds the Classics Catalog, selected limited-time game trials and cloud streaming; Sony also lists a Sony Pictures Catalog in its US Premium offering, which has no trophy-specific value. There is no official claim that Premium increases trophy rates, unlocks additional trophy types or makes a platinum easier.

| Extra | You plan to download games from the current Game Catalog and the titles you want are included. | Regional availability, trophy list, completion time and removal date. |
| Premium | You will use a Classics Catalog title, a specific eligible trial or supported cloud streaming. | Whether the exact title, account region and device support that feature, plus any trial limits. |
| Neither by default | Your one target game costs less to buy outright, or it is likely to leave before you finish. | Current purchase price, subscription price shown on your account and realistic time to completion. |
For a single platinum, compare the current Extra-to-Premium price difference with the value of the Premium feature you would actually use. Sony does not publish one universal price difference that applies to every country, currency, account or promotion.

PlayStation Plus Extra
- Core PlayStation Plus benefits.
- The Game Catalog, described by Sony as containing hundreds of titles.
- Access that is dependent on the catalog remaining available in your region and on your subscription staying active.
Extra is enough for a conventional trophy plan: find a catalog game, add or download it while your membership is active, and play it on a supported console. The catalog is a rotating service, not a permanent game library.
#1 Best Overall
- Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.
- Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
- Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
- Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
- Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console
PlayStation Plus Premium
- Everything in Extra, including the Game Catalog.
- The Classics Catalog.
- Selected game trials with limited access periods or other title-specific limits.
- Cloud streaming for supported games and regions.
- Sony’s US plan comparison also lists a Sony Pictures Catalog, which does not affect trophies.
Premium is therefore an access-and-convenience upgrade, not a trophy multiplier. If none of its additional features changes how you intend to play, Extra supplies the same ordinary Game Catalog access.
Can you earn trophies with PlayStation Plus games?
A game obtained through a PlayStation Plus catalog can be part of a normal trophy hunt when the game is available to your account and you play a version that supports trophies. The subscription supplies a license to access the title; it does not turn the game into permanent ownership.
Before starting, open the game’s trophy list on your console or PlayStation profile and confirm the edition you are installing. Different versions can have separate lists, such as a PS4 and PS5 release, and a remaster can have a different list from the original. Your target should be the exact version you expect to finish.
- Membership status: Catalog access ends if the subscription expires or the title leaves the service.
- Version: Confirm whether your planned run is the PS4, PS5 or another listed edition.
- Synchronization: Allow the console to sync trophies while online so your progress is recorded to your account.
- Availability: A game can be removed even while you are partway through its list.
The official tier descriptions establish feature availability, not a universal trophy outcome for every game, edition or play method. Treat the individual game’s trophy list and platform behavior as the authority for your run.
Five questions that decide the right tier
1. Is the target game in your regional catalog now?
Search the current Game Catalog for each title you intend to play. Sony says catalog availability varies over time and by plan, and the US catalog page identifies end dates for some titles. A game appearing in a search result, an old guide or another country’s catalog is not enough; check the store and catalog attached to your own account.
2. Do you need a Premium-only feature?
Write down the feature that would justify Premium. Valid reasons include a particular Classics Catalog game, a particular trial or supported cloud streaming. “It might be better for trophies” is not a feature Sony attributes to Premium.
3. Can you finish before removal?
Catalog access is temporary. If Sony displays a removal date, compare it with your estimated hours, your available play time and any online or missable requirements. Leave a buffer for patches, difficult cleanup and days when you cannot play. If the schedule is tight, buying the game outright may be less risky than starting a long completion on a rotating catalog license.

4. What will the subscription cost over your actual run?
Use the price displayed for your country and account, including the billing period you would choose. For one game, compare:
| Calculation | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Subscription cost for the required months | Count the months from starting the game through the final trophy, not merely the month you download it. |
| Premium surcharge | Subtract the current Extra price from the current Premium price for the same billing period and account. |
| Outright purchase price | Compare the current store price for the exact edition, including any sale price that genuinely applies to you. |
| Risk adjustment | Consider the value of keeping the game if it leaves the catalog or your membership ends. |
This is a decision method, not a promise that a catalog subscription is always cheaper. A short, focused run may favor Extra; a game you expect to revisit may justify ownership; Premium only adds financial value when you use its extra features.

5. Will you download or stream?
Downloading is the straightforward choice for a serious trophy run because it avoids dependence on stream availability, network quality and device eligibility. Premium cloud streaming is title- and region-dependent. Sony directs players to its Cloud Streaming Game Finder and says select PS5 games can stream to PlayStation Portal. Sony does not state that every catalog game streams, nor that trophy behavior is universally identical in every streaming setup.
Extra versus Premium features, side by side
| Feature | Extra | Premium | Trophy-hunting implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core PlayStation Plus benefits | Included | Included | No tier-specific trophy advantage is established. |
| Game Catalog | Included | Included | The central source of catalog-based trophy games is available at both tiers. |
| Classics Catalog | Not included | Included | Premium is required for a Classics title that is not otherwise available to you. |
| Game trials | Not included as a Premium feature | Selected games only | Check the individual trial’s time, content and trophy terms before relying on it for a full run. |
| Cloud streaming | Not included as a Premium feature | Supported games, regions and devices only | Verify the exact game and play method; downloading remains the least ambiguous approach. |
| Sony Pictures Catalog | Not listed as an Extra feature in the cited US comparison | Listed for the US Premium offering | No direct trophy benefit. |
How to choose a tier before starting a platinum
- Make a target list. Record the games, the console version you want and whether each is a Game Catalog, Classics Catalog or non-catalog purchase.
- Check your account’s catalog. Open the current PlayStation Plus catalog in your country and verify that each title is available to your plan.
- Inspect the trophy list. Check the number of trophies, online requirements, difficulty-related trophies, missables, DLC and any separate PS4 or PS5 lists.
- Record the removal date. If one is shown, put it beside your estimated completion date and add time for cleanup.
- Choose the play method. Prefer a download for a long or precision-sensitive run. If you want streaming, use Sony’s Cloud Streaming Game Finder to verify the title, region and device.
- Price the complete plan. Compare the required subscription months, the Extra-to-Premium difference and the outright purchase price.
- Subscribe at the lowest tier that satisfies the plan. Start with Extra unless a verified Premium-only feature is part of your target list.
- Confirm access after installing. Launch the exact edition, check that its trophy list appears and synchronize your profile before beginning a major session.
When Premium is genuinely useful to trophy hunters
A Classics Catalog completion run
If your target is available through the Classics Catalog and not through Extra’s Game Catalog or a purchase you prefer, Premium is the relevant tier. Confirm the exact release and trophy list: a classic release, remaster and remake can represent separate games with different requirements.
A specific eligible trial
A trial can reduce uncertainty before you commit to a large game. Premium trials are limited-time access to selected titles, not an unlimited test of every catalog game. The official page does not establish universal trophy support, a universal transfer of trial progress or trial limits that suit a complete trophy run. Read the terms for that individual game and regard the trial as an evaluation tool unless those details are explicit.
Supported cloud streaming
Streaming can be useful when storage, downloads or a compatible console are inconvenient. It can also be useful for a supported PS5 title on PlayStation Portal. Confirm all three variables—game, region and device—before upgrading. A streaming feature that is unavailable for your target does not justify Premium for that run.
When Extra is the better trophy-hunting plan
Your games are ordinary Game Catalog titles
When the games you want are in the current Game Catalog and you expect to download them, Extra supplies the relevant access. Premium would add features you may never use, while the trophy lists and completion requirements remain game-specific.
You are running a focused backlog month
Extra works well for a planned sequence of catalog games that you can complete during a defined membership period. Build the schedule around the earliest removal date rather than assuming every title will remain for the whole year.

If your plan is to sample several games and finish one or two, Extra avoids paying for Premium features that are unrelated to the games you selected. Recalculate if a later target turns out to be a Classic, a supported trial or a streaming-only convenience.
Download versus cloud streaming for trophy runs
| Consideration | Download | Cloud streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Requires the title to be downloadable to your supported console and available to your account. | Requires the exact title, region and device to support streaming. |
| Network dependence | After installation, play is less dependent on a continuous high-quality connection, although online features may still require one. | Gameplay depends on the streaming connection and service availability. |
| Storage | Uses console storage and download time. | Reduces local storage needs. |
| Trophy certainty | The conventional, least ambiguous route for a completion run. | Do not assume universal trophy behavior; verify the game and setup. |
| PlayStation Portal | Remote Play and cloud-streaming support are different functions. | Sony identifies select PS5 cloud-streaming titles for Portal, not every catalog game. |
Do not treat cloud streaming as the same thing as Remote Play from your own console. They have different requirements and eligibility rules. If a trophy is timing-sensitive, an online-dependent run is already complicated, or the removal date is close, download the game when that option is available.

A catalog license is not ownership
Adding a catalog game to your library does not permanently grant the game. Access depends on the title remaining in the service and your membership remaining active. A purchase is the more durable option when you want to retain the game after either condition changes.

Removal dates can invalidate an otherwise good plan
Do not start a 100-hour completion because a game is currently listed without checking for an end date. Prioritize titles with imminent removals, leave time for DLC and cleanup and keep a fallback purchase plan if the game is central to your goals.

Regional catalogs are not interchangeable
Availability, pricing, streaming support and even the selection of Classics can differ by country. Advice based on the US pages applies most directly to US accounts; readers elsewhere must check their own PlayStation Store and account terms.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming Premium contains a larger ordinary Game Catalog. Both tiers include the Game Catalog; Premium’s distinction is its additional feature set.
- Buying Premium for a supposed trophy boost. Sony’s feature descriptions do not claim faster, easier or additional trophy earning.
- Ignoring the exact edition. Install the version whose trophy list you intend to complete.
- Starting after a removal announcement. Compare the end date with a realistic completion schedule, including DLC.
- Assuming every trial is a complete-game license. Verify trial duration, included content, trophy support and progress behavior for that title.
- Assuming every game streams. Check Sony’s Cloud Streaming Game Finder and the supported device list for the exact game and region.
- Confusing a catalog addition with ownership. Plan for continued membership or buy the game if permanent access matters.
- Using an old price or catalog list. Subscription prices, promotions and individual titles change; use the amount and listing shown to your account at the time of purchase.
Practical scenarios
Scenario: three Game Catalog platinums on a PS5
You have identified three current Game Catalog games, will download them and can finish before their listed dates. Extra is the rational baseline because every feature needed for this plan is included there. Premium would be justified only if you also intend to use a Classic, an eligible trial or supported streaming.
Scenario: one Classic is your priority
Your target is in the Classics Catalog and not in the ordinary Game Catalog. Premium is the tier that provides the needed access. Confirm the Classic’s exact trophy list and whether your regional catalog includes it before subscribing.
Scenario: you want to test a long game
Premium may be useful if that title has an eligible trial, but a trial is not automatically a full trophy-run solution. Check its limit and trophy conditions. If the trial cannot support the complete run, compare Extra or a purchase instead.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallScenario: you play on a supported Portal setup
Premium can make sense when the exact PS5 game is listed for cloud streaming in your region and your device is supported. If it is not listed, Portal use does not convert an Extra catalog title into a Premium streaming title.
Scenario: the platinum will take longer than the catalog window
Do not rely on either tier’s catalog access for a completion you cannot reasonably finish before removal. Price the game outright, wait for a sale or choose a shorter target whose availability fits your schedule.
A final checklist before you subscribe
- Is the game in your account’s current Game Catalog or Classics Catalog?
- Which exact platform and edition has the trophy list you want?
- Are there online, missable, difficulty or DLC requirements?
- Is an end date displayed, and does your schedule include a safety margin?
- Will you download, or have you verified cloud streaming for the exact title, region and device?
- Do you need a Classic, an eligible trial or streaming, or only the ordinary Game Catalog?
- What are the current Extra and Premium prices shown for your account?
- Would buying the game provide better value or safer long-term access?
Verdict
Pick Extra for the typical catalog-based trophy hunt. It includes the Game Catalog used by both tiers, and Sony does not describe Premium as improving trophy earning. Pick Premium when a specific Classics Catalog game, eligible trial or supported cloud-streaming setup is part of your plan. Whatever you choose, verify the regional listing, trophy list, play method and removal date first; those details matter more to a successful platinum than the tier name.
