What can you do on a PlayStation without Wi-Fi?
Offline use is possible, but it is not the same as making every game or feature work without internet. Games already installed on the console may be playable offline when the console’s activation settings and the game’s own requirements allow it. Downloaded media may also be available offline on PS5 when Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled. Sony’s PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play guide says users can play games and media on that console while it is offline.

Features that depend on a network do not become available just because a game launches. Online multiplayer requires connectivity, and Sony notes that some PS4 games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer. Individual games can impose additional connection or activation requirements, so offline support must be checked title by title.

Can I play digital games offline?
Usually, you need to go online first to sign in, buy or access the game, and download it. Sony’s PS5 setup guide says digital purchases and downloads require an internet connection and account sign-in. Once the game is installed, offline play depends on the console’s activation setting and the game’s own requirements.

PS5: enable Console Sharing and Offline Play
Sony says Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled automatically on the first PS5 used to sign in. Check it at Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. Only one PS5 at a time can have the feature enabled for an account. If you have switched consoles, verify the setting on the one you plan to use offline.
PS4: activate a primary console
On PS4, the corresponding account setting is primary-console activation. Check it at Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4. Sony allows one primary PS4 per account. Its primary PS4 activation guide also explains that an account can have both a PS4 and a PS5 activated.

Can I play disc games without Wi-Fi?
A disc can provide the game data, but it does not guarantee that a title can be set up or played entirely offline. The disc must be compatible with the console, and any required initial setup, updates, or game-specific online checks may still require a connection.

- PS5: A PS5 disc game requires a PS5 with a disc drive. Some PS5 models may need a separately installed compatible drive; check the documentation for the exact console model. Sony’s CFI-71xx PS5 quick start guide documents the drive requirement for that model group.
What should I do before going offline?
- Connect the console to the internet and sign in to the account that owns or accesses the games.
- Download the digital games you want to play and install any available updates.
- Verify the console’s offline setting: on PS5, check Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play; on PS4, check Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4.
- For disc games, install the game while online if needed and keep the disc available. Confirm that your PS5 model has a compatible disc drive if you are using a PS5 disc.
- If the publisher recommends an online first launch or the game has an activation requirement, complete it before disconnecting. There is no universal Sony rule established for every game’s first launch.

Which features still need an internet connection?
- Buying games in the PlayStation Store and downloading digital games.
- Online multiplayer and other game features that connect to the game’s servers.
- Downloading updates or other content while offline.
Sony’s support pages explain console activation and setup, but they do not provide a complete title-by-title list of games that work entirely offline, including first launch, licensing, and later play. For certainty about a particular game, check its publisher’s support information.
