Sony has not announced an official PlayStation 6 retail price or launch date. CEO Hiroki Totoki said the company has “not yet decided on” either the launch window or price for its future-generation gaming consoles. Any $1,000, $1,200 or other PS6 figure circulating online is speculation, not a Sony-confirmed price.
What Sony officially said about PS6 pricing
In reporting on Sony’s May 8, 2026 earnings call, GamesRadar+ quoted Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki saying the company had “not yet decided on” the launch window or the price tag for its “future generations gaming consoles.” Totoki also said, “Also, we might think of new ways of selling the product,” indicating that Sony is considering not only the hardware cost but potentially a different way to bring the next console to market.

Those comments are the clearest public position available: Sony is evaluating the next generation, but it has made no retail-price commitment. They do not confirm a $999 launch price, a $1,200 premium model or any other specific dollar amount.

Why the PS6 price is still undecided
Memory and component costs
Totoki said Sony is watching memory-market conditions and considering how to reduce hardware costs in areas other than semiconductors. Memory pricing and availability can change the cost of a console substantially, especially when a new system requires faster or greater-capacity components. Until Sony has greater visibility into those costs, setting a final consumer price would carry more risk.

A possible change in how the console is sold
The reference to “new ways of selling the product” leaves open several business-model questions, such as how Sony might structure hardware tiers, bundles or other purchase options. Sony has not described a specific model, so no alleged subscription, financing arrangement or bundled price should be treated as confirmed.
Launch timing is also unsettled
Sony has not confirmed a PS6 release window in the researched statements. Without a launch date, there is no reliable way to tie a price estimate to a particular currency, market or component-cost environment.
Current U.S. PlayStation prices provide the only official benchmark
Sony’s PlayStation Blog announcement published March 27, 2026, said the following U.S. prices would take effect April 2, 2026. Sony attributed the increases to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.”

| Product | U.S. price effective April 2, 2026 | How it helps assess PS6 speculation |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 | Official lower-priced current-generation reference |
| PS5 | $649.99 | Official standard-console reference |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 | Official premium-tier reference |
| PlayStation Portal remote player | $249.99 | Accessory price, not a console equivalent |
These are current U.S. prices, not PS6 forecasts. They show that a future console could be positioned above the standard PS5, near the premium PS5 Pro, or in another tier entirely; Sony has not selected which approach it will use.
What Sony’s business figures reveal about the transition
Sony’s FY25 earnings speech says its FY26 operating-income guidance includes “an increase in investments for the next-generation platform.” That confirms active investment, but investment is not the same as a finalized product announcement, price or release date.
The same speech reports 125 million monthly active PlayStation accounts in March 2026 and cumulative PS5 sales above 93 million at the end of March. This large installed base gives Sony reasons to keep monetizing PS5 hardware, games and services while it develops the next platform. It also means Sony can adjust PS6 timing and positioning rather than rushing a public price before costs and demand are clearer.

Is the PS6 really going to cost $1,000?
There is no evidence in Sony’s official statements that the PS6 will cost $1,000. A four-figure estimate may be based on assumptions about memory, advanced components, inflation or a premium launch configuration, but it remains unconfirmed. The only defensible answer today is that Sony has not set the price.
Likewise, the current PS5 Pro price of $899.99 is an official premium-tier anchor, not proof that a PS6 will launch at $900 or more. A standard PS6, a higher-end model or multiple configurations could have different prices, and Sony has not announced any of them.
How to evaluate future PS6 price claims
- Look for a Sony announcement. A confirmed retail price should come from Sony or an official regional PlayStation channel, with the market and currency identified.
- Check whether the claim names a model. Standard and premium hardware can have different prices; an unnamed “PS6” figure is incomplete.
- Separate launch price from later pricing. Regional taxes, exchange rates, bundles and later revisions can change what buyers pay.
- Check the date. Memory and component costs are part of Sony’s stated uncertainty, so old estimates can become obsolete quickly.
- Do not mistake analyst or social-media estimates for confirmation. Until Sony publishes a figure, $999, $1,200 and similar numbers are scenarios rather than decisions.
What is known and unknown
| Question | Current answer |
|---|---|
| Has Sony confirmed a PS6 retail price? | No. |
| Has Sony confirmed a PS6 launch date? | No, not in the statements discussed here. |
| Is Sony investing in a next-generation platform? | Yes. FY26 guidance includes increased investment. |
| What costs is Sony watching? | Memory-market conditions and other hardware costs, including ways to reduce costs beyond semiconductors. |
| Are $1,000-plus PS6 prices official? | No; they are speculation. |
The Bottom Line
Sony is working toward a next-generation PlayStation and increasing investment, but it has not announced the PS6 price or launch window. Use the April 2026 U.S. PS5 prices—$599.99 for Digital Edition, $649.99 for PS5 and $899.99 for PS5 Pro—as reference points only, and treat every specific PS6 dollar figure as unconfirmed until Sony publishes it.
