Short answer: A PS5 runs the overwhelming majority of the 4,000-plus PS4 games, but compatibility is not universal. A DualSense controller is required for native PS5 games; a DualShock 4 works for supported PS4 games running on PS5. Original PlayStation VR can also work on PS5, provided you use the PS4 camera and the required camera adaptor. PS VR2 is a separate, PS5-only system and does not play original PS VR software.
Compatibility belongs to the specific console generation, game, accessory model and required setup—not to the “PlayStation” name alone. Use the individual PlayStation Store listing and the accessory maker’s compatibility information before buying hardware.

Can I play PS4 games on PS5?
In most cases, yes. Sony describes the “overwhelming majority” of more than 4,000 PS4 games as playable on PS5. That is a broad compatibility statement, not a guarantee for every disc, download or feature. A game can start and remain playable while a PS4-specific function is unavailable, or it can show errors or other unexpected behavior.
The PlayStation Store identifies titles that are “Playable on: PS4 only.” Treat that label as a hard stop for PS5 play. For games that are listed as playable on PS5, read the title’s notes and any warnings before buying an accessory or an upgrade. Sony recommends trying the game on PS5 first when functionality or behavior might differ.

Disc and digital editions
A PS4 disc requires a PS5 model with a disc drive. A PS4 digital license is tied to the account that owns it, so sign in to that account on the PS5 and check the game library. The Store page is the authority for the particular edition you own; do not assume that a similarly named special edition has identical support.
Why “backward compatible” is not a complete answer
Compatibility can mean that a game launches, that its original controls work, or that every feature behaves exactly as it did on PS4. Those are different outcomes. A title may be playable while lacking a peripheral mode, showing an error in a particular function, or behaving differently after a console or game update. Check the listing and, where possible, test the game before spending money on add-ons.
How to check a game before you buy or install it
- Open the exact PlayStation Store listing. Use the PS4 or PS5 edition you intend to own, rather than relying on a search result or a retailer’s generic “PlayStation” description.
- Read the “Playable on” information. A listing marked “PS4 only” cannot be treated as a PS5 game.
- Look for controller and VR requirements. A game may require DualSense, a specific VR system, Move controllers, an Aim controller or another named device.
- Check warnings and feature notes. A playable PS4 game can still have unavailable functions, errors or unexpected behavior on PS5.
- Match the accessory model. Compare the exact model number with the manufacturer’s compatibility list, then verify that the game supports it.
- Test the game before buying extras. This is especially important for older PS4 titles and specialty peripherals, where a game can run without exposing every original feature.
Will my PS4 controller work on PS5?
A DualShock 4 wireless controller works with supported PS4 games played on PS5. It does not control native PS5 games. Sony’s current support guidance states that PS5 games can only be played with DualSense wireless controllers. Therefore, owning a PS5 does not make a DualShock 4 a universal second controller.

Sony Interactive Entertainment Vice President of Global Marketing Isabelle Tomatis summarized the older-controller boundary in the company’s peripheral FAQ: “The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.” The key words are supported PS4 games; the statement does not extend DualShock 4 support to PS5 games.

Can I use a PS4 steering wheel, arcade stick or flight stick on PS5?
Possibly. Sony says officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks and flight sticks may work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games. That is conditional support, not a blanket approval for every product in those categories.
Check two things independently:
- The exact peripheral: Read the manufacturer’s current PS5 and PS4 compatibility list for the model, connection method and required firmware.
- The exact game: A console can recognize a wheel or stick while a particular game does not implement it, or supports only a subset of its controls.
Sony has cautioned that not all officially licensed or third-party peripherals and accessories may work on PS5. Do not infer compatibility from a USB plug, a PS4 logo or the fact that another game supports the same device. If the manufacturer does not name your model and the game, treat support as unconfirmed.
Can I play original PS VR games on PS5?
Yes, supported original PS VR games can run on PS5, but the setup uses older camera hardware. You need:
- The original PlayStation VR headset.
- A PlayStation Camera for PS4, model CUH-ZEY1 or CUH-ZEY2.
- The PlayStation Camera adaptor for connecting that camera to PS5. Sony says this adaptor is available at no charge.
- Any game-specific controllers, such as PlayStation Move or PlayStation VR Aim, listed by the title.
The PS5 HD Camera does not replace the PS4 PlayStation Camera for original PS VR. Buying the newer camera alone will not complete an original-PS-VR setup.

Original PS VR setup checklist
- Confirm that the game is an original PS VR title supported on PS5, rather than a PS VR2 title.
- Connect the PS4 PlayStation Camera, model CUH-ZEY1 or CUH-ZEY2, through the camera adaptor.
- Connect the original PS VR processor and headset according to the headset’s cabling instructions.
- Pair or connect the Move or Aim controller if the game listing requires one.
- Start the game and check tracking, camera view and controls before purchasing replacement or additional accessories.
Original PS VR compatibility is therefore a combination of the game, the headset, the PS4 camera and any required controllers. A PS5 console by itself does not provide every part of that older setup.
Does PS VR2 work with PS4 or original PS VR games?
PS VR2 is a separate compatibility ecosystem. It works with PS5, not PS4. Original PS VR cannot play PS VR2 games, and PS VR2 cannot play original PS VR content. The two headsets and their software libraries should be treated as distinct even when a game has a similar name in both generations.

Before downloading or buying a VR game, open its Store entry and confirm both the VR generation and the required controllers. A headset name in a product description is not enough to establish cross-generation support.

Does the PS5 support PS3 discs?
No. PS5 does not support PS3 game discs. This is separate from PS4 backward compatibility and is an important check when buying a used physical game.

There is also a specific digital-upgrade trap: some PS4 digital upgrades were obtained through a PS3-disc upgrade path. If the PS3 disc is still required to play the upgraded game, that game cannot be played on PS5 through that path. The disc requirement remains the deciding factor.

The game is listed as PS4-only
Do not attempt to solve this with a different controller or accessory. A PS4-only Store label means the title is not supported on PS5.
The game launches, but a feature is missing
Read the game’s compatibility notes and test the title without buying new hardware. Sony acknowledges that some compatible games can have missing PS4 functionality, errors or unexpected behavior.
DualShock 4 works in menus but not in a PS5 game
This is expected for a native PS5 title. Switch to a DualSense controller. DualShock 4 support on PS5 is for supported PS4 games, not native PS5 games.

A wheel or arcade stick is detected but does not control the game
Check the game’s supported-device list, update the peripheral if the manufacturer specifies firmware, and confirm that your exact model—not merely the product category—is listed. A console connection does not prove in-game support.
Original PS VR has no camera tracking on PS5
Verify that you are using a PS4 Camera model CUH-ZEY1 or CUH-ZEY2 and the PlayStation Camera adaptor. The PS5 HD Camera cannot replace that camera for original PS VR.
A PS VR2 game will not start on original PS VR
Check the VR generation in the Store listing. PS VR2 software requires the PS VR2/PS5 ecosystem and is not playable through the original headset.

A practical buying decision framework
Use this order whenever you are deciding whether an old game or accessory will work:
- Identify the game generation: PS4, native PS5, original PS VR or PS VR2.
- Identify the console: PS4, disc-drive PS5 or digital PS5.
- Read the Store compatibility label: look specifically for “Playable on: PS4 only” and any warnings.
- Identify the exact controller or accessory model: DualShock 4, DualSense, Move, Aim, wheel, stick, camera or headset.
- Confirm the game’s required controls: especially for VR and specialty peripherals.
- Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility information: Sony’s general category guidance cannot settle a model-specific question.
- Test before expanding the setup: verify that the game runs and that its important functions work before purchasing extras.
This process prevents the most common mistake: treating “works with PlayStation” as a universal compatibility promise. The reliable answer is always the intersection of the console generation, the specific game listing, the exact accessory and any required setup hardware.
