Sonys PlayStation-App-Redesign vom 7. November 2017 stellte Freunde und ihre Aktivitäten stärker in den Vordergrund: Neue Tabs am unteren Bildschirmrand sollten den Zugriff auf Online-Freunde, ihre Spiele und Beiträge erleichtern. Das war eine Änderung an Navigation und Auffindbarkeit – Sony veröffentlichte keine Messung, die einen Anstieg der Interaktionen oder der Nutzung belegt.
Was sich in der PlayStation App 2017 änderte
Im Redesign vom 7. November 2017 ordnete Sony zentrale Bereiche in einer neuen Navigation am unteren Bildschirmrand an. Die Tabs „What’s New“, „Friends“ und das Profil sollten es einfacher und schneller machen, zwischen dem Online-Status von Freunden, den von ihnen gespielten Titeln und ihren Aktivitäten beziehungsweise Beiträgen aus der PlayStation-Community zu wechseln.
Brian Dunn, damals Senior Marketing Manager für PlayStation Now, beschrieb das Ziel so: „It’s now easier and faster to switch between viewing who’s online, what they are playing, and keeping up with the latest activities and posts from your friends and the PlayStation community.“ Das Zitat gibt Sonys Absicht wieder; es ist kein unabhängig gemessener Nachweis für eine bessere Bedienbarkeit oder mehr soziale Aktivität.
Welche Schnellzugriffe der zentrale PlayStation-Button bot
Zusätzlich zu den sozialen Tabs führte Sony einen zentralen blauen PlayStation-Button ein. Darüber sollten häufig genutzte Bereiche erreichbar sein, darunter:

Damit verteilte das Redesign die Funktionen auf zwei erkennbare Bereiche: soziale Inhalte in den unteren Tabs und ausgewählte Dienste hinter dem zentralen Button.
Was aus der App verschwand oder ausgelagert wurde
- „Live from PlayStation“: Laut Sonys Ankündigung war der Bereich nach dem Update nicht mehr in der PS App verfügbar. Spielübertragungen blieben über das PS4-Dashboard erreichbar.
- PS4 Second Screen: Die Funktion wurde in eine separate App ausgelagert. Sony beschrieb sie als Möglichkeit, PS4-Menüs zu navigieren, Text über die Bildschirmtastatur eines Mobilgeräts einzugeben und in kompatiblen Spielen Zusatzinformationen zu nutzen.
Diese Änderungen betreffen die PlayStation-App-Ankündigung von 2017. Die damals genannten Mindestanforderungen – iOS 9.0 oder höher und Android 4.1 oder höher – sind historische Angaben aus diesem Beitrag und keine Aussage zu den heutigen Systemanforderungen.

2017 war nicht das spätere Redesign von 2020
Sony stellte am 28. Oktober 2020 ein weiteres Redesign vor, diesmal ausdrücklich für PS4 und PS5. Laut der Ankündigung von 2020 sollte die Startseite zeigen, welche Spiele Freunde gerade spielten, und den Zugriff auf zuletzt gespielte Titel und Trophäen erleichtern. Zu den außerdem angekündigten Funktionen gehörten integrierte Nachrichten, mobile Sprach-Chats und Party-Gruppen, ein nativer Store sowie Remote-Downloads. Diese Merkmale gehören zur späteren Aktualisierung und sollten nicht dem Redesign von 2017 zugeschrieben werden.
Spätere soziale Funktionen kamen in eigenen Updates
Auch weitere soziale Ergänzungen wurden separat angekündigt. Am 13. September 2023 beschrieb Sony Emoji-Reaktionen auf Nachrichten und Vorschauen auf Share Screens, bevor Nutzer einer Party beitraten (PS5- und App-Update von 2023). Am 12. September 2024 kündigte Sony Party-Links an, die über Nachrichten- und Social-Media-Apps geteilt und auf Mobilgeräten geöffnet werden konnten. Ein App-Update sollte außerdem das Erstellen solcher teilbaren Links auf dem Mobilgerät ermöglichen (Ankündigung zu Party Share von 2024).

Ein deutschsprachiger PlayStation-Leitfaden vom 9. Februar 2021 dokumentierte für die damalige App unter anderem Partys, Text- und Sprachnachrichten, das Teilen von Bildern und Push-Mitteilungen. Er nannte eine damalige Partygröße von bis zu 16 Personen einschließlich des Organisators. Diese zeitgebundene Angabe belegt keine aktuelle Grenze.

Die offiziellen Ankündigungen erklären, welche Bereiche Sony hervorhob und welche Funktionen es änderte. Sie nennen jedoch keine Studie oder Nutzungsstatistik, mit der sich ein Effekt auf Interaktionen, App-Nutzung oder Zufriedenheit quantifizieren ließe. Die belegbare Aussage ist daher eine über die Gestaltung: Sony wollte Online-Freunde, deren Spiele und Aktivitäten leichter erreichbar machen.
