Short answer: A PS5 runs PS5 games and the overwhelming majority of PS4 games. Sony said in its November 2020 launch FAQ that more than 99% of its 4,000-plus PS4 games were compatible, but that is a dated figure rather than a live compatibility count. Most PS4 and PS5 games with online multiplayer require PlayStation Plus, although some do not. For storage, a compatible internal M.2 SSD can run PS5 games, while USB extended storage is mainly for archiving PS5 games and playing compatible PS4 games directly. Features such as 1440p output, VRR, ALLM and 3D audio depend on your display, HDMI connection and the game.
What can you play on a PS5?
The PS5 is designed for native PS5 games and backward compatibility with PS4 software. Compatibility is assigned per title, so the safest method is to check the individual game’s current PlayStation Store listing or the publisher’s support information before buying, downloading or transferring it.

PS4 compatibility is broad, but the headline number is historical
Sony Interactive Entertainment stated in its PS5: The Ultimate FAQ, published on November 9, 2020, that more than 99% of the 4,000-plus PS4 games were compatible with PS5. That statistic describes Sony’s launch-era assessment; it should not be presented as a current, continuously updated count. Game patches, editions and publisher support can change what a particular title does on PS5.

Native PS5 games and PS4 versions are separate cases
A game can have both a PS4 release and a PS5 release. Whether your saves move between those versions, whether you receive an upgrade, and whether the two versions can play together are decisions made for that game. The console does not guarantee that every PS4 save will import into a PS5 version.
Do you need PlayStation Plus to play online on PS5?
Sony’s official wording is: “In order to play most PS4 and PS5 games in online multiplayer, you need to have a PlayStation Plus subscription.” The important qualifier is most: some games do not require the subscription. Open the game’s PlayStation Store listing to verify the requirement for a specific title before subscribing.
Network functions can also be limited by age settings and parental controls on the account. A child account may therefore have less access even when the game and subscription normally support online play.

How PS5 storage works
PS5 storage options are not interchangeable. Decide whether you need to run games directly, keep games installed without re-downloading them, or protect and synchronize saved data.
| Storage location | What it can hold | Can you play directly from it? | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Console storage | Installed PS5 and PS4 games, saved data, applications and other console data. | Yes. | Primary space for games you are actively playing. |
| Compatible M.2 SSD | PS5 and PS4 games plus media applications. | Yes, for both PS5 and PS4 games. | Adding playable high-speed capacity inside the console. |
| USB extended storage | PS5 and PS4 game data. | PS4 games can be played directly. PS5 games must be moved to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD first. | Archiving PS5 games and expanding space for PS4 games. |
| PlayStation Plus cloud storage | PS5 and PS4 saved data. | It synchronizes saves; it is not game-installation storage. | Backing up and moving saves between consoles. |
| Ordinary FAT or exFAT USB storage | Items such as screenshots and PS4 saves; supported uses vary by device and format. | It is not the same as PS5 USB extended game storage. | Moving media and compatible save files. |
When an M.2 SSD is the right expansion
Choose a compatible M.2 SSD when you want additional space from which PS5 games can be launched. Sony’s storage guidance says to check the current minimum performance and size requirements before buying and to install current PS5 system software. Sony’s storage-solutions information describes expansion of up to 8 TB. Compatibility is not determined by capacity alone, so verify the current requirements for your PS5 model and the drive you plan to install.
An M.2 drive can also run PS4 games and hold media applications. This makes it the most flexible expansion option when your library contains both generations and you do not want to shuttle PS5 games between drives.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
When USB extended storage is better
USB extended storage is useful when you want to keep a PS5 game available without downloading it again, or when you have a large PS4 library. Sony lists 250 GB as the minimum and 8 TB as the maximum capacity for the USB-drive category on its storage-solutions page.
The critical limitation is play location: a PS5 game stored on USB extended storage must be copied back to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before it can run. Compatible PS4 games can run directly from the USB extended drive. Copying an installed game is generally faster than downloading the full game again, but the USB drive does not remove the need for playable PS5 space on the console or M.2 SSD.
Cloud saves are for saved data, not extra game installs
PlayStation Plus cloud storage is separate from both game-storage options. Sony’s current support documentation lists 100 GB for PS5 saved data and another 100 GB for PS4 saved data, with a limit of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. Use it to synchronize or recover saves; it does not let you launch a PS5 game that is not installed on console storage or an M.2 SSD.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not confuse ordinary USB storage with extended storage
Sony distinguishes a FAT or exFAT USB device used for items such as screenshots and PS4 saves from a USB drive formatted as PS5 extended storage. Device support can vary. If your purpose is to play PS4 games, archive PS5 installations or move media, select the storage function that matches that purpose rather than assuming every USB drive behaves the same way.

Does PS5 support 1440p, VRR and ALLM?
Yes, but each display feature has equipment and software conditions.
1440p output
Sony documents 1440p HDMI output for compatible televisions and PC monitors. The display must support 1440p at 60 Hz, or 1440p at both 60 Hz and 120 Hz, depending on the mode you want to use. A monitor that accepts an HDMI signal is not automatically guaranteed to support every PS5 output mode, so confirm its stated resolution and refresh-rate support.
Variable refresh rate (VRR)
VRR requires a compatible HDMI 2.1 VRR television or monitor. The result also depends on the display and the game: a VRR-capable connection does not mean every title will use VRR or deliver the same frame-rate behavior.
Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM)
ALLM is supported on compatible HDMI 2.1 televisions. On some sets it appears as a Game Mode setting or is controlled by that setting. Consult the television’s own documentation when the PS5 does not trigger the expected low-latency mode.

Tempest 3D Audio through TV speakers
Sony describes Tempest 3D Audio support through built-in television speakers. The feature still depends on compatible system and game support, and it is distinct from whether you use headphones or an external sound system.
Can PS4 and PS5 players play together?
Cross-generation multiplayer is not a blanket PS5 feature. Sony says it depends on the individual game and its developer. Some games allow PS4 and PS5 players to share sessions, while others separate the versions. Check the title’s store page or developer support details for the exact cross-play arrangement, including whether a specific mode or edition is excluded.
Do PS4 saves transfer to PS5?
Save migration from a PS4 version to a PS5 version also depends on the game and developer. A PS4 save may transfer, may require a game-specific process, or may not be usable by the PS5 version. Sony’s general PS5 compatibility information does not promise universal cross-generation save support.
PlayStation Plus cloud storage can hold PS4 and PS5 saved data, but storing a save in the cloud does not itself convert it to a different game version. Confirm the publisher’s instructions before deleting the PS4 installation or starting the PS5 edition.
A practical PS5 compatibility and setup checklist
- Identify the exact game version. Check whether the listing is for PS4, PS5 or both, and read the stated upgrade, multiplayer and save-transfer notes.
- Verify online requirements. Look for the PlayStation Plus requirement on the game’s PlayStation Store listing; do not assume that every online title follows the same rule.
- Choose storage by activity. Buy a compatible M.2 SSD if you want to launch PS5 games from added capacity. Choose USB extended storage when archiving PS5 games or playing compatible PS4 games directly is sufficient.
- Check the drive specification before installation. Sony’s M.2 requirements and supported capacities can be revised, so confirm the current minimum performance, size and system-software conditions.
- Match the display to the feature. For 1440p, verify 1440p/60 Hz or 1440p/60-and-120-Hz support. For VRR and ALLM, verify HDMI 2.1 compatibility on the television or monitor.
- Protect saves separately. Use PlayStation Plus cloud storage for synchronization and recovery, remembering that its capacity applies to saved data rather than installed games.
- Check developer-specific behavior. Before moving from PS4 to PS5, confirm cross-generation multiplayer and save-transfer rules for that title.
What changes by country or over time?
PlayStation Plus prices, catalog contents, cloud-streaming availability and game trials can change and can differ by market. The same applies to individual game listings and publisher support. Sony’s 2020 compatibility statistic should therefore be treated as historical context, while the current store listing and support page for your region are the authority for a purchase or subscription decision.
