Horde Siege and Versus bring back two familiar Gears pleasures: surviving a fight together and measuring your team against another. In Gears of War: E-Day, they put those feelings into distinct multiplayer rhythms—one built around a changing co-op battlefield, the other around even-start 4v4 competition. That combination is what makes these modes feel, to me, like a return to the Gears I remember.
Why these modes take me back
Gears multiplayer has always made teamwork feel physical. You do not just agree on a plan; you move through danger together, decide when to push, and rely on a teammate to cover the space you cannot. Horde Siege and Versus preserve that basic pleasure, but they ask for different kinds of trust.

One is a cooperative struggle against a battlefield that changes around your squad. The other is a direct contest in which both teams begin on equal terms. Moving between those modes brings back the contrast that made Gears multiplayer so memorable to me: the shared relief of surviving a wave, and the sharp focus of trying to outplay another team.

The Coalition describes Horde Siege as an evolution of Gears’ co-op wave-survival mode, set across larger maps where squads respond to changing objectives, gather Energy, and decide how to spend it and where to take the fight. That design gives cooperation more texture than simply holding one position until the next wave arrives.

The persistent-battleground idea is especially evocative. According to the official multiplayer overview, teams can come across equipment or fortifications left by squads that extracted earlier. It gives the battlefield a sense of history: another group has already made choices here, and your team inherits the consequences. Extracting successfully is also the best way, in the overview, to earn and retain weapon parts.
Classes give each player a role without making customization a separate mode. The Coalition’s overview describes four launch classes, each with its own starting loadout, combat bonus, unlock progression, and Tactical Gear; weapon customization is shared across classes. It also announced three Horde Siege maps for launch, with more planned afterward. Those are design details from the official overview and could change through updates.

That mixture of familiar wave survival and new decisions is the childhood-memory part for me. The important thing is not nostalgia for a particular weapon or map; it is the feeling that a tough encounter belongs to the whole squad. You are watching the same fight, but each player has a different responsibility in it.
Versus keeps the contest clean and readable
Versus channels that squad instinct into competitive play. Xbox describes it as refined PvP across new maps and 4v4 modes. The Coalition says every Versus mode uses four players per team, with the same starting weapons and equipment on both sides and no weapon mods. Its stated aim is to keep the contest fair while preserving tension, skill, and team play.

That equal-start approach is a useful counterpoint to Horde Siege’s class progression and tactical choices. In Horde, the squad responds to a changing PvE situation and develops its capabilities. In Versus, the rules strip away weapon mods and give both teams the same starting kit, making coordination and execution the focus.
That is why the two modes feel connected without feeling interchangeable. Horde Siege asks whether the team can adapt and endure; Versus asks whether it can work together under pressure against an equally equipped opponent. Both turn individual movement and decisions into a team outcome.

How to play E-Day multiplayer now
As of October 7, 2026, Xbox lists Gears of War: E-Day as available for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC. Xbox says the game is included with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Its product page also says online campaign co-op, Horde Siege, Versus, and other online multiplayer features require a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer; subscription terms can change.

The beta is over. The Coalition’s FAQ, dated August 3, 2026, listed early access from August 6–10 and open access from August 13–17, with Horde Siege and 4v4 Versus available in beta. Those dates are historical, not a current access route.
