Play-to-Own vs. Play-to-Earn: What Do Players Really Own?

Play-to-own puts possession of game assets at the center; play-to-earn puts rewards for playing there. A game can do both, but neither model guarantees that an item will stay useful, tradable, or valuable. Industry discussion has moved beyond early play-to-earn designs, yet the available evidence does not show that play-to-own has definitively displaced them.

What is the difference between play-to-own and play-to-earn?

These are industry labels, not universal technical or legal categories. In this article, play-to-earn (P2E) means a game rewards participation with tokens or other assets that may be exchangeable or sellable. Play-to-own (P2O) emphasizes a player’s possession of game assets, potentially with the ability to hold, trade, or transfer them.

The distinction is about the main value proposition, not a strict either-or. A game may reward players and let them hold tokenized items at the same time. Receiving a reward, holding a token, and playing a game whose logic runs on a blockchain are three separate things: one does not automatically imply the others.

  • Reward: The player receives something for participating. Whether it can be sold or cashed out depends on the game’s rules and available markets.
  • Tokenized asset: A player holds a blockchain token associated with an item or resource. The token may be transferable, but that alone does not guarantee the item remains useful or that a buyer exists.
  • On-chain game: Some or all game logic and state are recorded or executed on a blockchain. Tokenizing ownership records does not require putting the game itself on-chain.

Why is the conversation moving beyond early P2E?

The Blockchain Game Alliance’s 2024 State of the Industry report, titled Redefining Player Rewards: How Blockchain Gaming is Shifting Beyond Play-to-Earn, describes P2E as central to blockchain gaming’s 2021 rise and recounts later criticism and experimentation with reward systems. That supports a shift in industry attention, not proof that one model has won.

The Alliance’s research page identifies a 2025 report as its latest survey and describes respondents as industry professionals. A professional survey can show what people in the industry are discussing; it does not by itself establish what all players prefer. The material available from that page does not disclose detailed 2025 findings, and no current, named, market-wide statistic establishes that play-to-own is overtaking play-to-earn.

The practical reason to look beyond a simple earnings pitch is that rewards and durable player value are not the same thing. A token payout may be possible to trade, but its value can depend on demand, market access, the game’s rules, and continued support. Ownership-focused design asks a different question: what does the player actually control, and what can they do with it?

Do players really own their in-game items?

Sometimes a player controls a transferable token associated with an item. That is a meaningful form of control, but it should not be confused with owning every right connected to the item. A token does not, by itself, establish ownership of the artwork or intellectual property, guarantee access to a game, or require a publisher to keep supporting the item.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s April 4, 2024 issue spotlight, Banking in video games and virtual worlds, describes varied arrangements: assets may remain within a platform, move through supported or third-party markets, and in some cases be converted to fiat currency. Trading and cash-out options therefore depend on the specific game and market; they are not a built-in promise of tokenization.

Before treating an item as an asset, check the relevant terms and mechanics:

  • What exactly does the player hold: an in-game record, a token, or both?
  • Can it be transferred, and are transfers limited by platform rules, fees, or other restrictions?
  • Where can it be used, and does its utility depend on the publisher’s servers or decisions?
  • Is there a supported market or only a third-party venue? Is cash-out actually available?
  • What happens to access and utility if the game changes, closes, or stops supporting the item?

What can make a player-owned economy fail?

Transferability does not create demand. An item can be technically tradable but have little practical use, few buyers, or no dependable route to cash out. Its usefulness may also depend on a live game and rules controlled by the publisher. These dependencies mean a token can persist while the experience associated with it changes or disappears.

Supply and access matter too. Axie Infinity’s own documentation describes the tension in its player-to-player economy: prices that rise too high can make entry harder, while excessive growth in supply can lead to unhealthy inflation. This is the project’s account of its economic design, not independent proof that its model is sustainable or representative of other games.

Players should also weigh security and recourse. The CFPB’s spotlight identifies theft, scams, money-laundering concerns, sensitive-data use, and the possibility that players may have less recourse than they would with traditional financial accounts. These are risks discussed in a U.S. consumer-policy context, not a statement of law or protections in every country.

Does play-to-own mean a game is fully on-chain?

No. A game can use a blockchain to track ownership of selected assets while keeping gameplay, rules, and most state elsewhere. A fully on-chain game puts its logic and state on-chain as well as, potentially, its asset records. That is a separate design choice from whether players can hold or transfer items.

In a June 5, 2024 essay, BITKRAFT Ventures distinguished asset-ownership tracking from on-chain game logic and state. The essay points to potential composability and persistence, alongside constraints on speed and cost. It also treats the future importance of fully on-chain games as uncertain. This is an investor’s analysis, not settled market consensus; the distinction is useful, but on-chain execution does not itself guarantee a better game or durable player rights.

How to evaluate a game that promises ownership or earnings

Compare the actual game and its rules, not just its label. The same questions work for P2E, P2O, and designs that combine the two:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Play without the financial pitch. Is the core game engaging if rewards are small, unavailable, or no longer valuable?
  2. Check the cost of entry. Must a player buy tokens or items before playing? Could rising prices exclude newcomers?
  3. Read the asset rights and utility. Identify what the player holds, what can be transferred, where the item works, and which rights remain with the studio.
  4. Trace the market route. Find out who supports trading, what fees or restrictions apply, whether cash-out is permitted, and whether there is observable demand. A listing is not proof of liquidity.
  5. Inspect the economy. Look for how item and token supply, rewards, and demand are managed. Ask how the system responds to inflation or falling participation.
  6. Understand security and recourse. Check wallet and account safeguards, reporting channels, and what help is available after a scam, compromise, or market failure.
  7. Identify who controls changes. Determine which rules are set by the studio, token holders, or software, and who can alter them.

This checklist reflects recurring economic, governance, and consumer-risk questions in the academic survey SoK: Play-to-Earn Projects by Yu, Zhang, Chen, and Fang (2022), the CFPB’s 2024 spotlight, and Axie Infinity’s economic documentation. The survey is a framework for analysis, not a current census of games.

Is play-to-own crushing play-to-earn?

Not on the evidence available. The BGA’s 2024 report documents a conversation about moving beyond early P2E reward models, while its research page points to a newer professional survey without exposing detailed findings. Neither establishes a universal shift in player behavior or proves that P2O has displaced P2E.

The more useful distinction for players is what a particular game delivers: meaningful play, clearly defined asset control, a workable economy, and realistic expectations about trading and support. A game can promise ownership without providing durable utility, and it can pay rewards without offering meaningful control over assets. Evaluate those properties separately.
