Plaud NotePin Launches as a Wearable AI Note-Taker—but NotePin S Is Now the Newer Model

Plaud NotePin is a compact, wearable audio recorder that sends captured conversations to Plaud’s app for transcription, speaker labels, summaries, searchable notes and structured action items. The original model remains the lower-priced option, but Plaud launched the NotePin S on January 4, 2026, with a tactile instant-highlight button. That distinction matters when comparing price, controls and accessories.

What Plaud NotePin actually is

NotePin is dedicated recording hardware, not a smartwatch, general-purpose assistant or standalone transcription service. You wear or clip it, start recording with its physical control, and let it capture audio locally. Afterward, the recording syncs to Plaud’s software, where its AI can produce a transcript, identify speakers, summarize the discussion and extract action items.

Plaud says the ecosystem supports the Plaud App, Plaud Web and Plaud Desktop. The company advertises transcription in 112 languages, professional templates, search, question-answering and multimodal input such as text and images. These are product claims rather than independent accuracy tests; results can vary with language, accent, jargon, overlapping speech and background noise. See the current feature list at Plaud’s NotePin product page.

Why use a wearable recorder?

The main benefit is hands-free capture. A phone can be distracting or awkward to place in the middle of a conversation, while taking notes means dividing attention between listening and writing. NotePin can stay attached to clothing or worn around the neck while you speak with a source, conduct an interview, attend a class or visit a customer.

That does not make it automatically better than a phone. Microphone placement, room acoustics and clothing coverage still affect intelligibility. “Wearable” also does not mean always recording: you must intentionally activate it and follow applicable consent rules.

Original NotePin specifications

The following figures are manufacturer-rated values shown on Plaud’s US product page, not guaranteed real-world performance.

Specification Plaud NotePin
Price shown $159 USD
Dimensions 2.01 × 0.83 × 0.43 inches
Weight 0.59 oz
Battery 270 mAh
Continuous recording Up to 20 hours
Standby Up to 40 days
Storage 64 GB
Microphones Two MEMS microphones
Effective recording range Up to 9.84 feet
Charging time About two hours
Connectivity Bluetooth Low Energy and Wi-Fi

Battery endurance depends on recording, syncing, temperature, firmware and other conditions. The 20-hour figure is a maximum continuous-recording rating, not a promise of a full day of mixed use, and 40-day standby is not active-use battery life. The 9.84-foot range is likewise a specification, not a guarantee in a crowded room, outdoors or through heavy clothing.

What is included and how it is worn

The listed package includes the NotePin, magnetic pin, clip, charging dock and USB-C cable. Plaud’s setup guide says to bind the device to the Plaud app before use: follow Plaud’s NotePin setup instructions.

Plaud also describes necklace and wrist-worn configurations. Check the regional product page before ordering because bundles and accessories can vary by country, promotion or product variant.

Pacemaker warning: Plaud warns users with pacemakers not to wear NotePin on the chest because its accessories contain magnets, including when using the lanyard, magnetic pin or clip. Follow the manufacturer’s safety guidance and consult a clinician if you are unsure.

NotePin versus NotePin S

Plaud introduced NotePin S on January 4, 2026. It is an upgraded version of the same wearable AI-note-taking concept, not a completely different product category. Its defining change is a tactile instant-highlight button: a short press marks an important moment for later AI processing. Plaud’s launch announcement also introduced Plaud Desktop. Details are in the official launch announcement.

Recording Up to 20 hours Up to 20 hours

The practical reason to pay the additional $20 is easier physical marking of key moments, especially when you do not want to open the app. Plaud’s published comparison does not establish that NotePin S transcribes more accurately, so the newer model should not be treated as an audio-quality upgrade without independent testing. Existing NotePin owners who do not need instant highlights may have little reason to replace a functioning device.

Recording, syncing and phone-call limits

NotePin can record without a phone immediately connected, storing audio on the device until it syncs. Uploading, transcription, summaries and AI queries use Plaud’s software ecosystem and an appropriate phone, web or desktop connection.

The original NotePin does not directly record phone calls. Plaud says it lacks the vibration-conduction sensor required for that function: see the global product description. Do not buy it expecting to capture cellular calls through your handset.

Subscription costs and what they mean

The hardware is only part of the ownership cost because transcription and AI processing are tied to plan allowances. Plaud’s product page currently displays these annual-billing-equivalent prices:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Plan Price shown Transcription allowance
Starter Free 300 minutes per month
Pro $8.33 per month when billed annually 1,200 minutes per month
Unlimited $19.99 per month when billed annually Unlimited, subject to Plaud’s usage conditions
Team $20–$25 per user per month when billed annually Unlimited, subject to plan terms

At the displayed annual rates, Pro adds about $99.96 per year and Unlimited about $239.88 before tax or price changes. A realistic comparison is therefore hardware plus 12–24 months of expected service, not the $159 or $179 device price alone. Prices and allowances can differ by region, billing cycle, tax, promotion and account; verify the live checkout before buying. “Free” still means a 300-minute monthly transcription limit and may not include every advanced feature.

Plaud Desktop for online meetings

Plaud says its Desktop application can capture and summarize online meetings without a meeting bot joining the call, including meetings on Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. This is a different capture path from NotePin: Desktop handles computer meetings, while the wearable is aimed mainly at in-person and mobile situations. Plaud positions both within the same notes ecosystem.

Audio quality and AI limitations

Two MEMS microphones and a stated range of up to 9.84 feet will not guarantee clear speech in every setting. Expect more risk in crowded restaurants, echoing rooms, outdoor locations, meetings with several simultaneous speakers, strong HVAC noise or when the device is covered by clothing.

  • Test placement in the rooms and languages you actually use.
  • Review names, numbers, quotations and action items instead of treating the transcript as authoritative.
  • Use extra verification for legal, medical, academic or other high-stakes notes.
  • Do not assume support for 112 languages means equal accuracy across all of them.

Privacy, consent and sensitive conversations

Recording laws and workplace rules differ by jurisdiction and context, including journalism, education, healthcare and private conversations. Tell participants about the recording and obtain the consent required where you are. A small device should never be used to encourage covert recording.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plaud’s public product materials mention certifications and compliance claims, but those statements do not answer every practical privacy question. Before using NotePin for sensitive work, check current Plaud documentation for where audio and transcripts are processed, retention periods, deletion of recordings and derived notes, model-training settings, team administration and any sector-specific agreement. Do not assume cloud AI is equivalent to local-only transcription.

Common setup and use failures

  • Recording never starts: bind the device in the Plaud app first and verify the recording indicator or control response.
  • Unclear speech: move closer to speakers, avoid covering the microphones and test the actual room.
  • Unexpected plan limit: monitor monthly minutes before important interviews or classes.
  • Missing phone call: the original NotePin does not support direct call recording.
  • Shorter-than-expected battery life: treat 20 hours as a maximum rating and allow for syncing.
  • Unsafe wearing position: keep magnetic accessories away from the chest if you have a pacemaker.
  • Wrong model purchase: compare the original NotePin with NotePin S before checkout.

Who should buy NotePin?

Choose the original NotePin

  • You mainly record in-person conversations and want the lower current hardware price.
  • You are comfortable with its pressure-sensitive control.
  • You accept Plaud’s cloud processing and subscription allowances.
  • You do not need phone-call recording.

Choose NotePin S

  • You want the newest wearable model.
  • A tactile instant-highlight button is useful during interviews, sales visits or lectures.
  • You prefer the newer accessory configuration and accept the $20 premium.

Choose software or another tool instead

  • Most of your meetings are online and Plaud Desktop or another meeting recorder fits better.
  • You record too infrequently to justify dedicated hardware.
  • You require local-only processing, no subscription or direct phone-call recording.
  • Your organization cannot approve cloud processing or you cannot obtain participant consent.

Alternatives by workflow

Software-first services such as Otter.ai, Fireflies.ai and Notta may suit people who do not need wearable hardware. Apple Voice Memos (Apple’s official page) or Google Recorder information (Google Store) can be sensible for users who mainly need recording and are willing to organize or transcribe more manually. Compare hardware requirements, in-person versus online capture, transcription limits, privacy controls, integrations and total annual cost; alternative pricing changes and should be checked directly.

Verdict

NotePin remains a useful choice for people who want compact, hands-free recording of in-person conversations and are willing to pay for Plaud’s AI workflow. The original model is still the value option at the displayed $159 price. New buyers who will use instant highlights should spend the extra $20 on NotePin S, while existing owners can reasonably keep the original unless that control solves a real problem. Neither model is the right choice for direct phone-call recording, local-only processing or situations where consent and cloud handling cannot be managed.
