For a family planning a Vermont foliage trip in 2026, the practical answer is to choose a route around your dates, the latest regional color report and how much time you want outside the car—not to count on one statewide peak date. As of October 3, official updates show different stages of color across the state.
When is peak fall foliage in Vermont?
There is no single peak date that applies statewide. Vermont’s Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation reported on September 30 that the Northeast Kingdom, Upper Green Mountains and Capital Region had already seen good color for at least a week and were approaching peak. Increasing red foliage was also visible in parts of the Upper Connecticut River Valley and White River Valley. This is a dated regional snapshot, not a forecast for every town. Check the state foliage tracker close to departure.
A Southern Vermont update dated October 2 reported peak color in the Deerfield Valley, especially at higher elevations near Mount Snow and Somerset Reservoir. It expected lower parts of the valley to develop over the following couple of weeks but did not say how long peak would last. Elevation and location matter, so consult the report for the region you plan to visit rather than assuming the whole state will match.
Where should we go in Vermont to see fall colors with kids?
For a family, compare the length of the drive with opportunities to stop, stretch and do something beyond looking through the windows. These four options have different shapes; none is established as best for every family.

Distances and route descriptions are from Visit Vermont’s foliage route guide. The guide says the Stowe gondola runs through late October, but seasonal schedules can change. It describes Adams Family Farm’s petting farm and store as open year-round except Mondays; check directly with the attraction before visiting. The sources do not establish child ages, accessibility details or guaranteed operating calendars.
How can you plan a multi-day drive?
GoVisit Vermont’s four-day itinerary outlines a roughly 250-mile loop from the Northeast Kingdom south through Stowe and Waterbury, Route 100 and the Upper Valley. It says a car is needed. Treat it as one possible geographic framework, not a family-tested schedule or an advisor-verified recommendation.

To adapt it, use your actual starting point and dates to decide which regions belong on the trip. Check the foliage report for those regions, then allow time for stops rather than treating the route distance as the whole day’s plan. Families who prefer fewer long drives can focus on one of the shorter loops instead of covering multiple regions.

- Confirm gondola, chairlift, farm and park details directly with operators, especially for seasonal activities.
- Match the itinerary to your family’s starting point and available days. The route sources do not establish a universally suitable pace or a best route for all children.
Fall trips often center on foliage experiences, and leaf-peeping and scenic drives are prominent activities in Vermont’s state visitor tracking report.
