An asteroid impact is an event in which an asteroid strikes a planet or moon. The first can alter entire worlds; the second can range from making a local crater to causing global environmental effects. They are related kinds of collisions, but they are not interchangeable terms.
What the terms mean
Planetary collision
In this context, a planetary collision usually means a giant impact involving planets or large protoplanets. Such collisions belong to the formation and evolution of planetary systems. Depending on the collision conditions, they can change the colliding bodies’ composition and subsequent evolution, rather than simply marking their surfaces with craters. Asteroid impact
An asteroid impact occurs when an asteroid strikes a planetary body. “Asteroid” names the incoming object; “impact” names the event. An impact on a solid surface can excavate a crater, but the consequences vary with the object, its speed and composition, and the target body. The term does not imply a collision between two planets.

These are distinctions of participants, scale, and outcome—not a strict dividing line based on one agreed size cutoff. The sources cited here do not establish a universal threshold separating an asteroid impact from a giant impact.

How an asteroid impact happens
Asteroids orbit the Sun, and gravitational influences can gradually change their orbits. For an impact to occur, an asteroid and a planet must meet at the same place and time. An orbit that crosses Earth’s orbit does not, by itself, mean an impact is inevitable. NASA explains this orbital meeting condition in its 10 Things You Should Know About Planetary Defense.
When an object hits a solid surface, it can excavate and modify a crater. Crater shape depends on factors including the impactor’s size, velocity, and composition, as well as the target’s gravity. Smaller simple craters can be bowl-shaped; larger complex craters can have central peaks or rings. NASA’s Asteroid Day and Impact Craters describes these crater forms and terrestrial examples.

Two asteroid-impact examples show the range

Both sets of measurements and descriptions above come from NASA’s 2016 crater explainer. Chicxulub is best described here as an impact; identification of its impactor is not necessary to distinguish an asteroid impact from a giant planetary collision.

Both events involve bodies colliding, but their defining consequences differ. A surface impact is commonly identified through the crater and related geological evidence. A giant impact is discussed as a global event in planetary formation: its significance lies in how it can change the colliding worlds themselves. The difference is therefore not merely that one leaves a larger mark. It is also which bodies collide and whether the event reshapes planetary composition and evolution.
