This is an expansion of scope rather than a replacement of the premise. You still design habitats, meet animal needs, manage visitors and develop a functioning zoo; the sequel gives those systems more environments and a wider conservation context.
Aquariums and aviaries are the biggest practical change
Fully aquatic and flying species
Frontier Game Director Gareth Hughes describes aquariums and aviaries as new habitat types that allow fully aquatic and flying species “for the first time” in the series. That changes the construction problem from arranging walkable land and climbing surfaces to managing three-dimensional movement through water and air.

Frontier says birds and fish use full 3D navigation. In practical terms, players should expect enclosure layout, sightlines, swimming or flight volume and safe guest access to matter in ways a conventional land habitat does not. The announcement does not provide a complete species list, minimum enclosure dimensions or a final compatibility chart, so those details should not be inferred from the headline feature.
Walk-through aviaries and aquarium viewing
Aviaries can be customized, and Frontier says some may let guests walk through when conditions are safe. A 2026 preview also described constructible aviary canopies and aquarium tunnels. Those preview observations indicate that viewing architecture is part of the design challenge, but they are not independent tests or a guarantee that every enclosure supports every guest route in the final build.
For builders, the difference is more than adding decorative water. Aquariums and aviaries become functional spaces that must combine animal movement, keeper access, guest circulation, visibility and safety. A player who mainly enjoys terrestrial habitats will see these as optional new projects; a player who has wanted marine or bird exhibits gets an entirely new reason to build.
Conservation moves outside the zoo
Wildlife Reserves
Planet Zoo already connects management with welfare, research and releasing animals into the wild. Planet Zoo 2 adds customizable Wildlife Reserves, allowing players to release zoo animals into reserve spaces and work toward rebuilding natural habitats. The shift is from operating a protected collection to managing a connected conservation network.
The official descriptions do not specify every reserve objective, staffing rule or ecological metric. What is established is the structural change: reserves are a separate place to apply the animals and resources developed through zoo play, rather than a single release action at the end of an animal’s story.
Global projects and Franchise networks
Frontier describes global conservation projects, while the PlayStation listing says Franchise connects a network of zoos and reserves. That makes Franchise more consequential for long-term players: decisions in one location can be part of a broader collection, reserve and trading network rather than an isolated park.

Frontier’s launch announcements mention a WWF UK collaboration connected with Photo Mode. That is a stated thematic collaboration, not evidence of an affiliate program, commission arrangement or a separate conservation service. It reinforces the sequel’s emphasis on presenting wildlife and conservation beyond the zoo-management screen.
Animal behavior and cohabitation are announced system changes
Mood that is visible in behavior
Frontier says Planet Zoo 2 has a new behavior system in which animals’ visible actions reflect their mood. If delivered as described, this should make welfare easier to read through the animals themselves instead of relying only on management panels. A stressed animal might communicate a problem through behavior before a player opens a report, while a content animal could make a well-designed habitat feel more alive.
This remains a developer description, not a comparative behavioral study. The announcement does not establish how many mood states exist, how quickly they change, or whether the system produces deeper management outcomes than the original.
More chimpanzee movement and actions
Frontier specifically calls out additional chimpanzee movement and actions. That suggests some species receive more detailed animation and interaction treatment, but it should not be read as a claim that every animal has been rebuilt to the same extent.

The sequel gives cohabitation a larger role in management. In a zoo simulation, shared habitats can affect welfare, space, compatibility and guest appeal; making cohabitation more prominent means species combinations and habitat planning are likely to become more important decisions. Frontier has not published a complete compatibility matrix, so the original game’s rules should not be assumed to transfer unchanged.

Water, terrain and habitat detail
Dynamic water response
Frontier says water reacts dynamically to animal movement, including ripples and waves. This is a presentation and simulation change: water is described as responding to what animals do rather than remaining a static surface. It should make aquatic exhibits feel more physical, especially when viewed through tunnels or from close guest paths.
Updated construction tools
Planet Zoo 2 retains piece-by-piece construction while adding updated building tools, terrain brushes and foliage brushes. Blueprints are also part of the announced toolkit. These additions target the repetitive work of shaping a habitat, repeating structures and landscaping large spaces, while preserving the detailed placement that defines the original.
The original already offered detailed habitat construction and community sharing. Therefore, the sequel’s building pitch is continuity plus workflow improvement, not a completely different construction genre. Players who enjoy placing every wall and prop still have that option; players who want faster iteration gain brushes and blueprints.

What carries over from Planet Zoo
Both games are zoo-management and creative-building simulations. The original’s official console description centers on animal welfare, habitat construction, research, guest experience and releasing animals back into the wild. Planet Zoo 2’s listings retain animal needs, habitats, visitor facilities, zoo management and creative construction.
That continuity matters when deciding whether the sequel fits you. It is not presented as a stripped-down spin-off or a different genre. The sequel expands the habitat types and conservation scope while preserving the loop of building spaces, caring for animals, satisfying visitors and improving the operation.
There is no complete official feature-by-feature carryover list in the available launch information. Do not assume that every original species, asset, scenario, DLC item, save file or management rule transfers automatically. Check the final platform documentation and the game’s live support information for compatibility details.

Modes, sharing and multiplayer-adjacent features
Career, Franchise and Sandbox
The official PlayStation listing identifies Career, Franchise and Sandbox modes. Career is the structured option for players who want guided objectives; Sandbox is the creative environment for experimenting with construction and animal layouts; Franchise is the connected management mode that links zoos and reserves.
The announcements do not provide a mission count, campaign length or a detailed breakdown of progression between these modes. Those are areas where launch documentation or hands-on play is needed, rather than facts to infer from the mode names.
Frontier Workshop across platforms
The official listing says Frontier Workshop content can be explored and downloaded across platforms. That is significant for builders who rely on community-made habitats, scenery or blueprints: the sharing layer is intended to reach players beyond a single console ecosystem.
Cross-platform Workshop access is not the same as cross-platform save progression or cross-play. The available information establishes content discovery and downloads, but does not establish shared saves, co-operative zoo operation or platform-independent multiplayer.

Which game is the better fit?
Choose Planet Zoo if your priority is the established land-zoo loop
- You mainly want terrestrial habitats, animal welfare, guest management and detailed construction.
- You already own the original and are satisfied with its habitat range and community content.
- You prefer to wait for a sequel’s live performance, compatibility and reception to become clearer.
Choose Planet Zoo 2 if the new habitat types change your decision
- Aquariums, flying species or walk-through aviaries are the features you have been waiting for.
- You want reserves and global projects to be part of the conservation loop, not just zoo operations.
- You value the announced behavior, cohabitation, terrain-brush and blueprint updates enough to start a new management game.
- You play on PC, PS5 or Xbox Series X|S and want the current-generation release.
Do not use the feature count as a value shortcut
A longer feature list does not automatically make Planet Zoo 2 better value. The right comparison is whether its new habitat types and reserve structure address what you currently find missing. If you primarily build land habitats and are happy with the original, the sequel’s advantages may be incremental. If aquatic, flying and off-site conservation systems are central to your wish list, they are meaningful structural additions rather than cosmetic extras.
