Planet Zoo 2 is the better choice if you want the newest simulation systems: fully aquatic animals, flying birds and Wildlife Reserves arrive with the sequel’s October 13, 2026 release for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The original Planet Zoo remains the safer value for players who want a mature DLC catalog, Steam Workshop support and its established four-mode structure.
This comparison separates confirmed feature changes from details that vary by platform, edition and update. It also explains which game fits a first-time buyer, a long-time Planet Zoo player, a PC owner and a current-generation console player.

Planet Zoo 2 vs Planet Zoo: the short verdict
Choose Planet Zoo 2 when aquatic habitats, flying birds, Wildlife Reserves, newer animal behaviour and a current-generation console release matter most. Choose Planet Zoo when you prefer years of downloadable content, an established Steam Workshop ecosystem, the original Career/Franchise/Challenge/Sandbox structure or a lower purchase price during a sale.
| Priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fully aquatic animals | Planet Zoo 2 | The sequel adds fully aquatic species; the original’s feature set does not include this announced system. |
| Flying birds | Planet Zoo 2 | Flying birds are one of the sequel’s headline additions. |
| Wildlife conservation outside a conventional zoo | Planet Zoo 2 | Wildlife Reserves connect breeding and rehabilitation with conservation landscapes. |
| Large, mature DLC library | Planet Zoo | The 2019 game has an established Steam DLC catalog built over several years. |
| Workshop creations on PC | Planet Zoo | Frontier support confirms Steam Workshop integration for the original. |
| Current PlayStation or Xbox hardware | Planet Zoo 2 for new features; either game for an existing library | Both are available to the current console generation, but Planet Zoo 2 is the newer release. |
| Lowest price | Usually Planet Zoo during a sale | Sale prices change by storefront and date; check the live listing rather than relying on a fixed figure. |
There is no single winner for every player. The sequel changes the kinds of habitats and conservation work you can build, while the original benefits from a longer post-launch content history and a more established sharing community.

What Planet Zoo 2 adds
Fully aquatic animals and aquatic habitats
Frontier’s May 28, 2026 announcement identifies fully aquatic species as a core addition. This is a systemic change rather than a cosmetic animal pack: aquatic animals require habitats designed around water, and their presence broadens the simulation beyond land enclosures.
If your question is “Does Planet Zoo 2 have aquariums?”, the precise answer is that it has fully aquatic animals. The published information does not establish a separate building type officially called an aquarium, nor does it specify every construction rule for aquatic exhibits. Expect water-based habitat gameplay, but check the edition’s current feature list if a particular aquarium-style building is essential to you.
Flying birds
Planet Zoo 2 also introduces flying birds. In the original game, birds could be represented as animals in the zoo, but the sequel’s announced feature is actual flight behaviour. That distinction matters for habitat planning: vertical space, open flight paths and barriers become part of the design problem instead of treating every species as ground-bound.
The available announcements do not provide a complete species list or a universal minimum enclosure size. Do not infer those details from screenshots or from another platform’s marketing page; verify them for the edition you intend to buy.
Wildlife Reserves
Wildlife Reserves are the sequel’s third major system. They connect zoo breeding and animal rehabilitation to broader conservation landscapes, giving the career campaign objectives beyond expanding a traditional visitor facility.
An October 13, 2026 review by PC Gamer describes career scenarios that restore reserves ranging from the Swedish tundra to Sumatra. In practical terms, the reserve layer changes the management loop: you are not only arranging exhibits and guest infrastructure, but also using animals and conservation work in a landscape-scale setting.
The review describes reserves as a bridge between breeding, rehabilitation and conservation. That is a review observation, not a promise that every reserve has identical mechanics. Scenario goals, available animals and building restrictions can differ, so read each career brief before committing resources.

New graphics and animal behaviour
Frontier describes a generational improvement in graphics and animal behaviour. Xbox Wire’s feature, written with Game Director Gareth Hughes, quotes him saying: Throughout Planet Zoo 2’s development we’ve worked to ensure that all of our animals feel genuinely alive and have authentic behaviours and interactions.
The important change is behavioural authenticity, not simply higher-resolution models. The sequel is intended to make animals react and interact in more lifelike ways, although no standardized benchmark or frame-rate comparison has been published. Visual quality and performance will still depend on your PC hardware, console mode, resolution and later updates.
What the original Planet Zoo still does better
A mature DLC catalog
Planet Zoo launched on PC on November 5, 2019 and now has an established Steam downloadable-content catalog. That history gives the original an advantage for players who want many years of packs, animals and themed building pieces available immediately.
A mature catalog is valuable in two ways. First, you can choose content around a specific project, such as a regional zoo or a particular animal group, instead of waiting for a new release. Second, sale events often discount older packs, although the actual price and timing vary by storefront and region.

Planet Zoo 2 launched on October 13, 2026, so its post-launch catalog is necessarily younger. The sequel may eventually receive comparable breadth, but future content and release schedules are not established by the available announcements. Buy it for the systems it has now, not for unannounced expansions.
Established game modes
The original’s four-mode structure is a known quantity:
- Career: guided scenarios with objectives and progression.
- Franchise: a connected management experience that uses online services.
- Challenge: a self-directed management game with more constraints than a completely unrestricted sandbox.
- Sandbox: creative building with reduced management pressure.
Frontier’s console information confirms these four modes for the console edition. They are also the structure long-time PC players associate with the original release. If you have already learned one mode’s economy, animal-care routines and building tools, returning to the original reduces the amount of relearning required.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Steam Workshop and sharing
Frontier support confirms Steam Workshop integration for the original PC game. Workshop lets players publish and download community-made creations, which can shorten the time needed to build complex habitats or inspire a new layout.
The console edition uses Frontier Workshop sharing rather than Steam Workshop. That difference is important when you move between PC and console: a creation available through one service is not automatically available through the other. Review the platform-specific sharing tools before buying add-ons or planning a cross-platform project.

How the new systems change the way you play
Habitat planning becomes three-dimensional
With fully aquatic animals and flying birds, the sequel asks you to think in terms of water volume and air space as well as ground area. A successful plan must account for where visitors view animals, how staff reach the habitat and how barriers contain animals whose movement is not limited to the floor.
This does not mean every enclosure needs to be enormous. It means the shape and height of the space matter more. Build a viewing route first, reserve service access for keepers and veterinarians, then place water or flight space where it can be observed without forcing guests into staff paths.
Reserves add landscape-scale objectives
A conventional zoo is organized around exhibits, guests and staff circulation. A Wildlife Reserve scenario adds restoration goals and a larger ecological setting. Career players should read the scenario objectives before spending money on decorative construction: a reserve may reward rehabilitation or habitat work more directly than a luxury entrance plaza.

The reserve concept also changes how breeding decisions feel. In the original, breeding is closely tied to collection management and franchise progress. In the sequel’s reserve scenarios, breeding and rehabilitation can feed a conservation outcome. The exact transfer rules between a zoo and a reserve are not specified, so treat each scenario’s instructions as authoritative.
Behaviour is a design consideration, not only a visual upgrade
More authentic interactions can affect where you place species, shelters and viewing areas. A visually attractive enclosure may still be poor if animals cannot reach food, water or refuge without crossing a guest-heavy area. Use the sequel’s animal feedback and welfare indicators rather than assuming that a design that worked in the original will behave identically.

Platforms, controls and online requirements
PC
Both games are available on PC, but they represent different points in the product lifecycle. Planet Zoo has the longer history of patches, downloadable content and Steam Workshop creations. Planet Zoo 2 offers the newer aquatic, flight and reserve systems.
For a PC purchase, compare your hardware with the current minimum and recommended specifications on the store page. A generational graphics upgrade does not guarantee a particular frame rate. Performance can change with animal count, guest density, habitat complexity, resolution and graphics settings, and no dated head-to-head benchmark is established here.

Planet Zoo 2 released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on October 13, 2026. The original’s console edition arrived in March 2024 and brought years of PC features, content and animals to PlayStation and Xbox, according to Frontier’s 2024 annual report.
For a current-generation console owner, the choice is therefore not between a current and obsolete platform. Both games are available on this generation, but only the sequel delivers the newly announced aquatic, flying-bird and Wildlife Reserve systems. Check the exact console store listing for edition contents, local language support and installation requirements.
Franchise and offline play
Frontier support states that Franchise mode in the original is unavailable in Offline Mode. You need the game’s online services when you want to use that mode; Career, Challenge and Sandbox are the alternatives when you cannot connect.
The available information does not state an equivalent offline or online requirement for every Planet Zoo 2 mode. The October 13, 2026 review reports no multiplayer and says creations can be shared, but sharing is not the same as cooperative play. Verify the sequel’s current service requirements before buying it for travel, a restricted network or a permanently offline PC.
Price and long-term value
Why the original can be the cheaper entry
Older games frequently receive discounts, and the original has had more time to appear in platform sales. That makes Planet Zoo a sensible low-cost entry when you want the core zoo-management experience, four established modes and a broad back catalog.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Do not treat any sale price as permanent. Storefront promotions differ by country, platform and edition, and downloadable-content bundles can change the calculation. Compare the base game and the specific packs you would actually use rather than buying a large bundle solely because its headline discount looks substantial.
When the sequel justifies a higher launch price
Planet Zoo 2 earns its premium when the new systems are the reason you want to play: aquatic animals, flying birds, reserve restoration or the sequel’s newer behaviour and graphics. If those features are optional to you, the original’s established content may deliver more hours per dollar immediately.
No reliable universal price or performance figure is available for either game. Check the live PC, PlayStation or Xbox listing on the day you buy, including taxes, regional currency, edition names and any launch promotion.

Choose Planet Zoo 2 if you are a first-time buyer who wants the newest systems
Start with Planet Zoo 2 when your mental picture of the ideal zoo includes underwater exhibits, birds in flight and conservation work across large reserves. You will be learning the series while also learning its newest systems, so there is little reason to master older mechanics first unless the original’s Workshop catalog is your main attraction.
Choose Planet Zoo if you want the deepest established catalog
Pick the original when you want a large selection of existing DLC, proven four-mode structure and Steam Workshop access on PC. It is especially attractive if you enjoy downloading community blueprints, replaying mature career scenarios or building a collection gradually during sales.
Choose based on platform community
On PC, the original has the clearest documented Workshop workflow. On PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, both games are current-generation options, but the sequel is the only one with the newly announced aquatic, flying-bird and reserve systems. If friends or family share creations with you, confirm that everyone is buying the same platform version and can access the same sharing service.
Choose the original for a lower-risk return visit
Returning players who already own original DLC may prefer to continue with the game they know, particularly if they have unfinished franchise zoos or a large Workshop library. Buy the sequel when its new systems solve a specific problem you have with the original; do not assume that existing DLC, saves or Workshop subscriptions transfer between games unless the publisher explicitly confirms it.

- List your must-have animals and activities. If fully aquatic species, flying birds or reserve restoration appear on the list, mark Planet Zoo 2 as the default.
- Check your platform. Confirm whether you are buying the PC, PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S edition and identify the sharing service attached to it.
- Audit your existing library. If you already own substantial Planet Zoo DLC or Workshop creations, calculate the value of continuing before starting a separate sequel collection.
- Decide how you play offline. The original’s Franchise mode does not work in Offline Mode. If reliable connectivity is unavailable, plan around Career, Challenge and Sandbox, and verify the sequel’s current requirements.
- Compare live prices. Check the base game, bundles and any launch or sale promotion on your storefront; prices are not stable enough to quote once for every region.
- Read the current system information. For PC, compare your hardware with the store’s requirements. For consoles, check storage space and the exact edition contents.
- Buy for confirmed features, not future promises. Planet Zoo 2’s current advantage is its announced aquatic, flight and reserve systems. Future DLC, transfers and performance improvements are not guaranteed.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing aquatic animals with a guaranteed aquarium-building mode: the sequel’s confirmed feature is fully aquatic species. A separately named aquarium facility is not established in the published information.
- Assuming birds automatically mean multiplayer wildlife management: flying birds are an animal-behaviour feature. The October 13, 2026 review reports no multiplayer.
- Expecting Workshop parity across platforms: Steam Workshop is documented for the original PC version, while console sharing uses Frontier Workshop. Services are platform-specific.
- Buying on performance claims alone: Frontier announces generational graphics and behaviour improvements, but no standardized head-to-head frame-rate test is available. Your settings and hardware still matter.
- Counting on DLC or save migration: no transfer policy is established in the available information. Treat the two games as separate purchases until an official feature statement says otherwise.
- Using an old sale price as a budget: prices change by region, platform and date. Recheck the storefront immediately before checkout.
Bottom line for PC and console players
Planet Zoo 2 is the forward-looking choice: it released on October 13, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with fully aquatic animals, flying birds, Wildlife Reserves and a stated generational improvement to graphics and behaviour. It is the game to buy when those systems define the zoo you want to build.
Planet Zoo remains the more established package. Its November 2019 PC foundation, years of DLC, documented Steam Workshop integration and familiar four-mode structure make it the better value for players who prioritize breadth, community creations and a lower sale price. Compare the current edition and storefront price, then choose the game whose confirmed features match how you actually play.
