Planet Zoo 2 vs Planet Zoo: What Changed and Which Game Should You Buy?

Planet Zoo 2 is the better starting point for most new players. Released on 13 October 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, it adds fully aquatic and flying animals, customisable aquariums and aviaries, wildlife reserves, a larger launch roster, and a new mood-driven presentation system. The original Planet Zoo remains the sensible value option if you already own it, want its extensive mature DLC catalogue, or find it substantially cheaper.

At a glance: Planet Zoo 2 or Planet Zoo?

The two games share the series’ central idea: design habitats piece by piece, care for animals, manage visitors and staff, and pursue conservation goals. The sequel expands the types of spaces you can build and moves conservation beyond the zoo itself. The original has had years to accumulate updates and downloadable content, while the sequel is the current release with the newest systems.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Planet Zoo began on PC on 5 November 2019 and reached PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on 26 March 2024. That longer lifespan matters: the original has an established player community, a substantial DLC catalogue and years of balancing and quality-of-life updates. No independent review-score synthesis or performance benchmark establishes that either game runs faster than the other on a particular console or PC.

What is new in Planet Zoo 2?

Flying and fully aquatic animals

The largest mechanical expansion is the addition of fully aquatic and flying species. In the original game, habitat design is primarily a land-and-water exercise. The sequel lets you plan spaces around animals that swim through dedicated aquatic environments or move through the air, changing how guests view exhibits and how you arrange care areas.

Aquariums and aviaries are customisable rather than fixed display boxes. That makes them building projects in their own right: you can shape the enclosure, choose how it fits into the wider zoo and integrate visitor viewing with animal care. The available material does not establish a complete species list or the exact construction limits for every aquarium and aviary, so treat the launch feature as a new habitat category rather than assume a particular tank size, filtration model or flight-path rule.

Wildlife Reserves

Planet Zoo 2 introduces Wildlife Reserves, expansive areas where animals can be released into a customisable environment. This extends the conservation loop beyond the managed zoo: instead of every animal living in a visitor-facing habitat, a reserve gives you a separate space to plan and maintain for released wildlife.

The reserve system is especially relevant if you enjoy the conservation purpose of the series more than ticket income. It also gives long-term builders another canvas, with a scale and function different from a compact exhibit beside a guest path. The launch information confirms the feature and its customisable nature, but does not specify a universal reserve size, a separate reserve economy or the exact release requirements for every species.

A mood-driven “living UI”

Frontier describes a “living UI system with animals behaving differently depending on their current mood,” according to Game Director Gareth Hughes. This is a presentation and feedback change as much as a visual one. In the original, you commonly interpret animal needs through management panels, alerts and habitat statistics. In the sequel, an animal’s behaviour itself is intended to communicate more of its current state.

That can make observation more meaningful: a content animal and a stressed animal should not read as identical animations while you manage them from a menu. The statement does not establish a numerical mood scale, a fixed list of mood states or whether mood directly changes income, breeding or welfare scores. Those details should be learned from the in-game tutorials rather than assumed from the announcement.

More than 130 animals at launch

Frontier’s launch material says Planet Zoo 2 includes more than 130 animals. The figure applies to the launch game and is not a promise of a particular future DLC total. It gives the sequel a broad starting roster, while the original’s practical advantage is the breadth accumulated through its base game and downloadable packs over several years.

Deluxe Edition additions

The Deluxe Edition adds six animal species and exclusive animal signs. The signs are a presentation and theming bonus; the six species are the part that changes the animals available to build around. The available listing does not name those six species in the supplied details, so do not buy on the assumption that a particular animal is included until your regional store page identifies it.

What Planet Zoo still does well

A mature construction and management sandbox

The original remains a deep construction-and-management simulation. Piece-by-piece building, terrain tools, animal care, guest-facing zoo design and conservation objectives all remain central to its appeal. If you enjoy spending hours refining paths, barriers, scenery and staff routes, the original already provides a large, proven toolbox.

Its systems can feel complex when you are learning them. Welfare, habitat requirements, staff facilities, guest expectations and finances interact, so a beautiful enclosure can still fail if animals lack the right conditions or keepers cannot reach it. That complexity is a strength for players who want a systems-heavy simulation and a possible source of friction for someone seeking a casual building game.

Four established play modes

Planet Zoo offers Sandbox, Career, Challenge and online Franchise modes. Sandbox removes most financial pressure for creative construction; Career provides structured scenarios; Challenge adds progression and constraints; and Franchise connects zoo management with an online animal market and related progression. The sequel is confirmed to retain career, franchise and sandbox foundations, but the supplied launch information does not confirm that every original mode has an identical implementation.

A broad DLC ecosystem

Years of expansions and smaller downloadable packs give the original a mature catalogue. That can matter more than headline launch features if you already own several packs or want a specific established theme. The trade-off is that buying the base game plus many add-ons can cost more than the discounted base game suggests, and the original’s content is divided across a long release history rather than one unified sequel package.

Side-by-side differences that affect play

Content maturity New release as of October 2026 Updated and expanded since 2019 The original has a longer history; the sequel has the current feature set.

Which game should a new player buy?

Buy Planet Zoo 2 when the new habitats matter

Start with Planet Zoo 2 if you are buying your first game in the series and want the current release. It is the straightforward choice when aquariums, aviaries, flying species, fully aquatic species or Wildlife Reserves are part of the fantasy you want to build. You also avoid learning an older interface before moving to the sequel later.

The sequel is also the better fit if your interest is animal presentation rather than only financial optimisation. The living UI is designed to make mood and behaviour more apparent while you play, although the exact effects of mood are not fully specified in the launch information.

Buy Planet Zoo when price and established content lead

Choose the original when it is on a substantial discount and you do not need the sequel’s new habitat categories. Its years of updates, four established modes and extensive DLC give it a large amount of proven content. This is particularly persuasive for a player who wants Challenge mode specifically or who has identified an original DLC pack that supplies the animals and scenery they want.

The original is also a reasonable choice if you prefer to let a new sequel receive patches and community feedback before committing. That is a timing preference, not evidence that the sequel is technically inferior: no independent benchmark or review synthesis establishes a performance advantage for either game.

Is Planet Zoo 2 worth buying if you already own Planet Zoo?

For an existing owner, the decision depends on whether the new systems change what you want to build. The sequel is a meaningful purchase if you have been waiting for flying or fully aquatic animals, custom aquariums, custom aviaries or a reserve outside the conventional zoo. Those are new play spaces, not merely a refreshed animal list.

Stay with the original if your current zoos already satisfy you, your favourite content comes from its mature DLC catalogue, or the sequel’s launch price is not attractive in your region. Owning the first game does not by itself make the sequel mandatory. Conversely, buying the sequel does not automatically replace every original feature: the supplied launch details do not establish save-transfer support, cross-save support, DLC carry-over or identical mode coverage.

Choosing on PC, PS5 or Xbox Series X|S

PC

PC is the longest-established platform for the series, with the original having launched there in 2019. The sequel is also listed for PC, and Steam identifies the Deluxe contents. Compare the system requirements and current storefront price on the day you buy; the supplied information does not provide a hardware specification or a measured frame-rate comparison.

PlayStation 5

Both games are available on PS5. The original arrived on the console on 26 March 2024, while the sequel launched there on 13 October 2026. A PS5 buyer choosing between them should focus on feature scope and price rather than assuming the newer release has a documented performance advantage.

Xbox Series X|S

Both games support Xbox Series X|S. The official Xbox listing confirms the sequel’s 13 October 2026 release. Check whether you are buying a digital or physical copy, which console generation the listing covers, and the price in your local store. Physical-stock availability and retailer programme eligibility are not established by the launch information.

Standard or Deluxe: which Planet Zoo 2 edition?

Edition Launch suggested price Confirmed contents Who should choose it?
Standard £39.99 / $49.99 / €49.99 Base game Players who want the core sequel and would rather decide about extra content later.
Deluxe £54.99 / $64.99 / €64.99 Base game, six additional animal species and exclusive animal signs Players who value the extra species and themed signs enough to pay the launch premium.

The listed launch difference is £15, $15 or €15 before regional taxes and promotions. The Deluxe purchase makes sense only if the six species and signs are useful to your planned zoo; there is no evidence here that it includes every future expansion or any original-game DLC. Since the six species are not named in the supplied listing details, verify the regional product page before paying for a particular animal.

Important uncertainties before you buy

  • Performance: No independent benchmark establishes frame rates, resolution targets, loading times or comparative performance on a specific PC, PS5 or Xbox Series X|S model.
  • Save migration: No verified save-transfer or cross-save policy is established. Assume your original zoos will not automatically move unless Frontier documents a transfer method.
  • Mode parity: Career, Franchise and Sandbox foundations are confirmed for the sequel, but identical support for every original mode, including Challenge, is not established in the supplied launch details.
  • Future content: The original has a substantial DLC history; no future DLC schedule or final lifetime roster for the sequel is established.
  • Regional buying conditions: The quoted prices are suggested launch prices. Store taxes, discounts, currency conversion, physical availability and platform-specific offers can change the final transaction.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Decide whether flying animals, fully aquatic species, aquariums, aviaries or Wildlife Reserves are essential to your design plans.
  2. Check your platform: the sequel supports PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; confirm that your console and storefront listing match.
  3. Compare the current local price with the launch suggested prices of £39.99/$49.99/€49.99 Standard and £54.99/$64.99/€64.99 Deluxe.
  4. If considering Deluxe, confirm the six included species and exclusive signs on your regional store page.
  5. If you already own the original, assume separate saves and separate content unless an official transfer policy says otherwise.
  6. Choose the original when its discount and mature DLC catalogue outweigh the sequel’s new habitat systems.

Bottom line

Buy Planet Zoo 2 for the modern starting point and its genuinely new ways to build: flying and aquatic animals, customisable aviaries and aquariums, Wildlife Reserves and mood-responsive animal presentation. Buy Planet Zoo when you want a mature, systems-heavy zoo builder with four established modes and years of DLC at a lower sale price, or when you already own it and none of the sequel’s new habitats changes your plans.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
