Planet Zoo 2 is the better fit if you want aquariums, flying animals, Wildlife Reserves, and the sequel’s revised behavior and management systems. The original Planet Zoo remains the sensible choice if its habitat-building, welfare, conservation, Sandbox play, and the downloadable content you already own cover what you want. Planet Zoo 2 is listed for October 13, 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, but storefront status can differ by region: the Steam page accessed on that date still showed the game as coming soon. Check your local store before buying.
This is a feature and ownership decision, not a performance verdict. Official material confirms the sequel’s new systems, prices, modes, and platforms, but it does not establish which game is easier, runs better, or delivers better value for every player.

Quick verdict: choose the habitat systems you actually want
- Choose Planet Zoo 2 when fully aquatic species, customizable aquariums, flying species in aviaries, Wildlife Reserves, or the updated animal-feedback and management model is the reason you are shopping for a new game.
- Choose Planet Zoo when you mainly want detailed terrestrial habitat construction, animal welfare, conservation, campaign or Sandbox play, and you already own a substantial collection of its downloadable packs.
- If you are new to the series, decide first whether those new habitat types justify the sequel’s listed price on your platform. Neither the available listings nor the developer announcement proves that the sequel replaces every strength of the original.
The clearest confirmed difference is scope: Planet Zoo 2 adds aquatic and flying animals as dedicated habitat types, while the original is built around its established zoo habitats and management loop. That distinction matters more than the sequel’s number in the title.

Planet Zoo 2 introduces customizable aquariums and fully aquatic species. The announcement feature names the Hawksbill Turtle and Ocean Sunfish as examples. These are not merely decorative tanks: they represent a new class of habitat to design and manage alongside the land-based exhibits familiar from Planet Zoo.

Frontier game director Gareth Hughes describes the significance directly: “New for Planet Zoo 2 are aquariums and aviaries, which have allowed us to add fully aquatic and flying species for the first time.” The quotation appears in Hughes’s May 28, 2026 feature for Xbox Wire. It is an official description of the feature, not an independent assessment of how deep the aquarium tools are in practice.
Aviaries for flying species
Aviaries are another new buildable habitat. The developer feature describes structures assembled with walls, support poles, and coverings. Birds can use natural perching spaces, and guests can walk through an aviary when the design is safe. That combination changes the design problem: you are planning vertical routes, overhead protection, perches, and visitor movement rather than only laying out ground-level barriers.
The announcement confirms flying species and walk-through possibilities, but it does not provide a complete species list or performance measurements. Treat the named construction elements as confirmed tools and wait for the live game or updated listing for the final roster and detailed limits.

Planet Zoo 2’s developers describe a “living UI” in which animal behavior communicates mood. The idea is to read what animals do, not only what a static panel reports, when deciding whether a habitat, social group, or care routine needs attention.
The same feature calls out improved chimpanzee movement, a larger management role for cohabitation, and water that reacts dynamically to animal movement. These changes could make observation part of routine zoo work: the animal’s actions become feedback about welfare and habitat conditions. They remain developer descriptions rather than independently tested changes, so they should be treated as announced design goals.
Wildlife Reserves and a wider conservation brief
Planet Zoo already links animal care with conservation, including breeding generations and releasing animals into the wild. Planet Zoo 2 expands that idea through Wildlife Reserves and what Frontier calls a deeper conservation focus. The announced systems connect habitat design to animal welfare, guest experience, zoo ratings, and income, while conservation work extends beyond the zoo gates into broader habitat projects.

This is a change in the management frame as much as a new location. In the sequel, a decision about a habitat can affect several outcomes at once: the animals’ welfare, the way visitors experience the zoo, the rating your operation receives, and the money available for further work. The official materials do not specify every reserve scenario or the full campaign structure, so do not assume that a particular reserve map or mission is guaranteed until it appears in the current listing.

Frontier’s announcements emphasize themed scenery, building tools, and Frontier Workshop blueprints. The official product listing also promotes community creations across platforms. This suggests that the sequel continues the series’ creative, shareable side while adding new ways to build and distribute designs.
Do not assume that the Workshop systems are identical between games. The announcements confirm sharing and blueprints, but they do not establish whether every original asset, blueprint, or compatibility workflow carries over. If you have invested heavily in the original’s community creations, check the live platform documentation before treating the sequel as a seamless migration.
Modes and the announced roster
The official PlayStation listing names Career, Franchise, and Sandbox modes for Planet Zoo 2. Its description says Franchise includes trading animals with other players. Sandbox remains available for players who want creative control without the same progression pressure as a career-style operation.
The Deluxe edition adds six animal species and exclusive signs. The base-game roster is not fully enumerated in the cited listings, so the six Deluxe animals should be understood as the edition’s stated additions rather than a complete account of every species in the game.
What Planet Zoo already does well
Detailed habitat and landscape construction
The original Planet Zoo is a zoo simulator centered on constructing detailed habitats and landscapes, then running the institution those spaces support. Its design loop combines building, animal care, research, visitor experience, and finances instead of treating construction as a separate editor.

That established foundation matters when comparing the games. Planet Zoo 2’s aquariums and aviaries are compelling only if you want those particular habitat problems. If your favorite activity is shaping land habitats, refining scenery, and balancing welfare with guest flow, the original already provides that core loop.
Individual welfare, research, and conservation
Planet Zoo’s store description highlights care for individual animals and their welfare, species research, generations of animals, and releasing animals into the wild. Those systems give a long-running zoo a sense of continuity: animals are not disposable exhibits, and management decisions affect breeding, care, and conservation outcomes.
The original’s conservation systems are therefore not absent or superficial. The sequel’s Wildlife Reserves broaden the scope, but the first game already gives conservation-minded players a reason to plan habitats, monitor animals, and maintain a functioning zoo.
Campaign, Sandbox, and community sharing
Planet Zoo includes campaign and Sandbox play. Campaign offers structured objectives, while Sandbox is suited to unrestricted creative projects. Steam Workshop sharing lets players publish and obtain community creations, extending the building toolkit beyond the assets shipped with the game.
The Steam listing also shows a substantial set of paid downloadable packs and bundled editions. For a returning player, that installed library is part of the comparison: buying the sequel means evaluating a new base game against an original game that may already contain years of purchased content and familiar creations.

The Steam page still displayed a coming-soon status when accessed on October 13, 2026 even though it listed that date. That mismatch is why the release date should be described as listed or scheduled until your regional storefront shows a purchase or launch option. What each edition includes
Base edition
The base edition is the standalone game at the listed US$49.99 price in the three US storefronts cited above. The listings do not establish a transfer program for original Planet Zoo DLC, so assume your existing packs remain tied to the original unless a current platform notice says otherwise.
Deluxe edition
Deluxe is described as the base game plus a Deluxe Upgrade Pack. The stated additions are six animal species and exclusive animal signs. Because the official listings do not name all six species in the cited copy, verify the current product description before paying the difference solely for a particular animal.
Listed preorder bonus
The preorder bonus pack listed by the Steam and PlayStation pages contains a Toucan Eat shop and signage, three unique animal donation bins, and a tiger photo stand-in wall. You want aquariums or flying animals
Planet Zoo 2 is the direct choice. Aquariums and aviaries are the sequel’s most visible, confirmed additions, and they are the only way in this comparison to build the newly announced habitats for fully aquatic and flying species. The Hawksbill Turtle and Ocean Sunfish examples show the type of collection the sequel is targeting.

You care most about established land habitats
Planet Zoo remains a rational purchase, especially at a discount or when you already own its downloadable packs. The sequel may improve management feedback, but the evidence does not show that it invalidates the original’s detailed habitat construction, welfare, research, campaign, or Sandbox systems.

You are primarily a conservation player
Choose based on the scale of conservation you want. Planet Zoo already supports breeding generations and releasing animals into the wild. Planet Zoo 2 adds Wildlife Reserves and links habitat decisions to welfare, guest experience, ratings, and income. If reserve-style projects are the feature that motivates you, the sequel has the stronger confirmed match; if your conservation play is centered on the original’s animal-care loop, the first game still covers it.
You build and share more than you manage
Both games support creative construction and community sharing, but the systems are described differently. Planet Zoo uses Steam Workshop sharing; Planet Zoo 2 is advertised with themed scenery, new building tools, Frontier Workshop blueprints, and cross-platform community creations.
