Those behaviors matter because a habitat is presented as a living space rather than a display box: the enclosure has to support the animals you place in it while also giving visitors something worth seeing.

Do not assume that every species can share an enclosure, or that one enclosure size works for every animal. The official material reviewed does not provide the compatibility rules, welfare thresholds, barrier specifications, or minimum dimensions needed to make those claims. Use the species and habitat information shown in the released game’s own interface when deciding whether a combination is appropriate.
Freshwater and saltwater aquariums
Planet Zoo 2 adds custom aquarium building for fully aquatic species. Frontier’s feature descriptions specifically distinguish freshwater and saltwater aquarium construction, so water type is an important planning consideration rather than a cosmetic option. Expect aquarium design to be a separate construction problem from a land habitat: tank walls, viewing areas, water environments, and the needs of aquatic animals all have to fit the space you create.
No official announcement supplies tank volumes, filtration requirements, species pairings, or operating costs. Treat those as game-specific values to check in the aquarium build and animal-information panels.
Aviaries for flying birds
Aviaries are customizable structures for fully flying birds. Frontier describes them as being assembled from barriers, support poles, and dynamic mesh covers. That combination gives you more control over the shape and height of a bird space than a simple flat-roof enclosure, while the mesh cover keeps the habitat enclosed.
The announcements do not state minimum flight-space dimensions, bird compatibility rules, or the number of support pieces required. Build from the requirements displayed for the selected species instead of relying on a universal aviary template.

Wildlife Reserves extend conservation beyond the conventional visitor zoo. Frontier describes projects that require you to release animals into customized ecosystems. In practical terms, a reserve is not just another exhibit: you are working toward a release objective and shaping an ecosystem that can support it.
The official descriptions do not list every reserve requirement or explain how reserve progression is scored. Follow each project’s stated objectives and use the reserve’s own ecosystem information before committing animals or construction resources.
How the zoo-management loop works
Frontier summarizes the loop in a clear chain: construct habitats for appealing animals, bring in guests, improve the zoo rating, and earn money to fund expansion. Guest needs are part of that chain, with shops, amenities, and educational opportunities helping turn a well-built animal area into a functioning attraction.
- Create an appropriate animal space. Choose the habitat type—land, aquarium, or aviary—and meet the requirements shown for the animals you intend to house.
- Provide care and operations. Staff need facilities and working areas, while animals need the services associated with their habitat.
- Make the zoo understandable and comfortable for visitors. Shops, amenities, and educational opportunities are explicitly part of the guest-facing management picture.

Staff morale is an explicit management concern. Frontier’s release announcement says: “Manage your staff’s morale and training to provide the best experience for them and your guests as your zoo grows.” Low morale is therefore not merely a decorative statistic; it belongs to the operational side of running a larger zoo.
Because no official source gives morale breakpoints or a universal fix, avoid treating a particular salary, break duration, facility count, or route length as guaranteed advice. Check the staff member’s status panel and respond to the causes the game identifies.
Training
Training is the second staff-development system named by Frontier. It is intended to help you support staff as the zoo expands, but the official announcements do not state the number of training levels, their costs, or which roles benefit most from early training. Let the in-game training screen show the available choices before spending money that your starting zoo may need elsewhere.
A practical staffing checklist
- Confirm which staff role the new habitat or aquarium needs.
- Place or identify the dedicated facility associated with that role.
- Assign an editable working area that covers the relevant buildings and habitats.
- Check morale and training status as the operation becomes larger.
- Expand staffing only after the interface shows an operational need; the reviewed official material does not support a fixed staff-to-animal ratio.
What should a beginner build first?

Start with a manageable project
Choose one habitat type and one animal project that you can fully support. A complete, serviced habitat is more useful than several unfinished structures because the stated progression depends on animal appeal, guest response, rating, and income working together.
Plan operations alongside the enclosure
Before committing to a second project, identify the staff facilities and working areas needed to run the first one. This keeps the operational side connected to construction instead of adding habitats that your staff cannot maintain.
Add guest infrastructure when visitors need it
