For a current Pixelmon 9.3.x server, allocate at least 4 GB of RAM to the Java server process, use 64-bit Java 21, and install the matching NeoForge and Minecraft versions. Four gigabytes is an allocation floor—not the amount of physical memory your whole machine needs. Leave additional memory for the operating system, Java overhead, file cache and any other services.

Pixelmon’s official documentation does not publish a CPU model, core count, clock-speed target or disk-size minimum. Those components depend on player count, world generation, entity activity, sidemods, plugins, backups and how long you retain worlds and logs. The sections below separate documented requirements from practical planning guidance.

At a glance: the documented requirements
| Component | Current Pixelmon 9.3.x guidance | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Server memory | At least 4 GB allocated; preferably more | Reserve additional physical RAM for the operating system and other processes. |
| Java | 64-bit Java 21 | Use the runtime that matches the exact Pixelmon release; other major versions can fail to launch. |
| Loader | NeoForge for 9.3.0 and newer | Do not install a Forge server for a 9.3.x pack. |
| Minecraft | 1.21.1 for Pixelmon 9.3.0–9.3.13 in the current table | Every client and the server must use the same compatible combination. |
| CPU | No numerical official minimum | Choose a modern processor with strong per-core performance and enough total capacity for other workloads. |
| Storage | No numerical official minimum | Budget for server files, a growing world, logs, backups and future updates; an SSD is a sensible operational choice. |
The Pixelmon Mod Wiki’s current server guide states: “At least 4 GB of allocated memory, preferably more. Exact requirements will depend on player count and your exact mods/plugins.” Treat that statement as the supported baseline rather than as a promise that every four-gigabyte installation will be smooth.
How much RAM does a Pixelmon server need?
Current 9.3.x servers
Set the Java process’s minimum and maximum memory to at least 4 GB for Pixelmon 9.3.0 and newer. More memory may be necessary as simultaneous players, generated chunks, Pokémon and other entities, plugins, sidemods and world size increase. There is no official “RAM per player” formula, so a fixed number such as 1 GB per player would be an unsupported rule.

Allocated RAM is not the host’s total RAM. A machine with exactly 4 GB installed cannot safely devote all of it to Java: the operating system, Java’s native overhead, file cache, monitoring tools and any web or voice services still need memory. Keep headroom and watch actual usage during peak activity. If the process approaches its limit, increase the allocation only when the host has spare physical memory; otherwise you can cause swapping or make the entire machine unstable.
Can you run Pixelmon with 4 GB RAM?
Yes, 4 GB can be a reasonable starting allocation for a small, lightly modded 9.3.x server. It is not a universal capacity guarantee. A pre-generated world with a few players may behave differently from a fresh world where several players explore in different directions while a biome-generation mod and extra sidemods are active. Start at the documented floor, then adjust after observing memory pressure, garbage-collection pauses and tick-rate problems under the workload you actually expect.
Legacy Forge instructions
Older Forge-era instructions document a 3 GB minimum and show a 3 GB -Xms/-Xmx example. That guidance applies to those older releases, not to current NeoForge-based 9.3.x servers. Do not use the legacy number as the requirement for a new 9.3 installation.
What CPU do you need for Pixelmon?
No official Pixelmon page reviewed publishes a processor model, minimum core count or clock speed. CPU demand is workload-dependent: the main server thread must process game ticks, chunk generation, entity behavior and automation, while additional threads and services handle networking, saving and other tasks. Exploring new terrain, keeping many entities loaded and running sidemods can all change the result.

Practical selection criteria
- Prefer a recent CPU with strong single-core or per-core performance, because the main tick loop can become the bottleneck before every core is fully occupied.
- Choose enough total capacity for the operating system, backups, monitoring and any other applications on the machine.
- Use a dedicated or mostly dedicated host for a community server; competing workloads can introduce latency even when average CPU utilization looks low.
- Measure the server under peak conditions instead of choosing by core count alone. Tick rate, chunk-generation time and console warnings are more useful than a generic benchmark score.
These are operational recommendations, not Pixelmon-published minimums. A processor that works for a private world may struggle when several players generate new chunks simultaneously. Conversely, a high-end CPU does not compensate for an undersized memory allocation or a slow, nearly full disk.
How much storage does Pixelmon use?
Pixelmon’s official guides do not specify a minimum or recommended disk capacity. Plan storage from what the server must retain:
- The NeoForge or server-loader files and the Pixelmon server jar.
- The generated Minecraft world, including region files created as players explore.
- Configuration files, player data, crash reports and logs.
- Automatic and manual backups, including multiple retained generations if you need rollback protection.
- Future Pixelmon, Minecraft, loader, plugin and sidemod downloads.
World growth and backup retention determine the real requirement. A server with one compact world and short-lived backups may use far less space than a long-running community world with several daily backup generations. Leave free capacity for updates and temporary files rather than filling the disk to its advertised limit.
SSD versus hard disk
An SSD, preferably NVMe where available, is a sensible operational preference because world saves, region-file access and startup can involve many small reads and writes. That is practical advice, not an official Pixelmon specification. A fast disk cannot remove CPU or RAM bottlenecks, but a nearly full or very slow drive can make saves, backups and chunk loading noticeably worse.

Java, Minecraft and loader compatibility
Pixelmon versions are tied to a specific Java and loader combination. Use the complete matrix below when selecting a server pack:
| Pixelmon line | Minecraft version in the current official table | Java guidance | Loader |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9.3.0–9.3.13 | 1.21.1 | Java 21 | NeoForge |
| 9.2.4–9.2.10 | 1.20.2 | Java 17 | Forge-era/current-guide transition |
| 9.2.0–9.2.3 | 1.20.1 | Java 17 | Forge-era/current-guide transition |
| 9.1.12 | 1.16.5 | Java 8–11 guidance differs by page; verify the exact pack | Forge |
The current guide explicitly says that, as of 9.3.0, Pixelmon requires NeoForge rather than Forge. It also warns that earlier or later Java versions will not work for the listed release bands. Match the server pack, Minecraft version, loader and Java runtime as one set; changing one component independently is a common cause of startup errors.
Client matching is mandatory
Every player must run the same Pixelmon version as the server. A mismatch produces a “Mod Rejection” error during connection. In practice, distribute the exact client modpack or a clearly pinned version list, and check the loader and Minecraft version as well as the Pixelmon number.
Java Edition prerequisite
Pixelmon is a Java Edition mod. Players need a paid Minecraft Java Edition copy, and only Java Edition supports Forge- or NeoForge-based mods such as Pixelmon. Bedrock-only installations cannot join this type of server.

Setting up a current NeoForge Pixelmon server
Use a dedicated directory so that worlds, configuration and logs remain separate from other Minecraft installations. The precise installer filenames vary by release, but the order is consistent:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

For Pixelmon 9.3.x, use Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge and 64-bit Java 21.
- Install the matching NeoForge server loader in the dedicated directory.
- Launch the server once. The first run normally stops after creating files so you can accept Minecraft’s EULA.
- Open the generated
user_jvm_args.txtfile and set the Java memory options. Allocate at least 4 GB for a current 9.3.x server, while leaving physical-memory headroom for the host. - Accept the EULA in the generated EULA file, then start the server again.
- Place the Pixelmon
-serverjar in the server’smodsfolder. The official guide describes this variant as smaller and intended for server upload; it works only on servers. - Add only sidemods and plugins that support the same Minecraft, NeoForge and Pixelmon combination. Restart and read the console for dependency or version errors.
- Install the identical client-side pack for players, including the exact Pixelmon version and required loader.
Biome-generation mods and the first world
If you are adding a mod that changes biome generation, follow the guide’s sequencing advice: delete the provisional world before the final Pixelmon-and-modded launch. Otherwise, the initial chunks created during testing can remain with the wrong generation near spawn. Back up anything you intend to keep before deleting a world directory.

Local hosting can be suitable for a private group, but the official guide notes that it is generally reachable only from the same local network unless you configure external access. For bigger servers, it strongly recommends a paid hosting service for performance, stability and safety. That recommendation is about operational reliability, not a particular provider or guaranteed player capacity.
| Consideration | Self-hosting | Managed or rented hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware control | You choose and maintain the CPU, RAM and disk. | You select from the host’s advertised resource tiers. |
| Network access | Depends on your router, upload bandwidth and configuration; local access is simplest. | Designed for remote players, subject to the provider’s network and location. |
| Maintenance | You handle Java, NeoForge, updates, firewalling and recovery. | The provider may supply a panel, image templates or support, but features vary. |
| Risk management | You must create and test your own backups and protect the machine. | Look for automated backups, DDoS protection and clear recovery procedures. |
| Cost model | Uses your existing hardware and electricity. | Recurring fee; the official guide publishes no universal price. |
Questions to ask a host
- Is the memory amount guaranteed, and is it server allocation or total node memory?
- What CPU share or dedicated performance is included?
- Is storage SSD or NVMe, and how much is available for worlds and backups?
- Are Java 21 and NeoForge supported for Pixelmon 9.3.x?
- Are automated backups included, how many are retained, and can you download them?
- Where is the data center, and what DDoS protection and network limits apply?
- Can you migrate the complete world and configuration files if you leave?
- What support response times apply during an outage?
Troubleshooting requirement-related failures
The server will not launch
Check Java first. A 9.3.x pack requires Java 21; using Java 17 or Java 8 can prevent startup. Then verify that the loader is NeoForge, the Minecraft version is 1.21.1 for the listed 9.3.x releases, and that the server jar belongs in the correct directory. Remove incompatible mods and read the first meaningful error in the log rather than the final shutdown line.

Players receive “Mod Rejection”
Compare the client and server Pixelmon versions character by character, then compare Minecraft and NeoForge versions. Reinstalling the client pack from the server’s pinned files is usually faster than changing the server blindly.

New chunk generation can stress the main tick loop, especially with several players moving in different directions or with biome-generation mods active. Test with fewer simultaneous explorers, pre-generate terrain where appropriate, remove unnecessary sidemods and monitor CPU, memory and disk activity. Increasing RAM helps only when memory pressure is the actual bottleneck.
Memory warnings or crashes
Confirm that the Java allocation is at least 4 GB for 9.3.x and that the host has additional free physical memory. If the machine is swapping, reduce competing services or move the server to a larger host before raising -Xmx. Review logs for a specific mod leak or crash instead of assuming every failure is a RAM shortage.
Quick Recap
Planning checklist
- Pixelmon 9.3.x, Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge and Java 21 are selected as one compatible set.
- The server process has at least 4 GB allocated, with host-level headroom remaining.
- CPU capacity is appropriate for expected players, chunk generation and sidemods; no unsupported “minimum CPU” claim is being treated as official.
- Disk space covers the world, logs, mods, updates and the number of backup generations you intend to retain.
- The Pixelmon server jar, not the client jar, is in the
modsfolder. - Clients use the exact same Pixelmon, Minecraft and loader versions.
- The EULA is accepted and the server has been restarted after the first launch.
- Biome-generation changes were installed before creating the final world, or the provisional world was removed after a safe backup.
- Remote communities have a tested backup, recovery and network plan, whether the server is self-hosted or rented.
