Pixel Watch Gesture Controls Explained: What Double Pinch and Wrist Turn Do

Pixel Watch hand gestures let you control supported actions without touching the screen. Google documents two one-handed gestures: double pinch—tap your index finger and thumb together twice—and wrist turn—quickly turn your wrist away and back. The current English help documentation covers Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Watch 5 running Wear OS 6.1 or later. Keep watch apps updated because gesture behavior can change with software updates.

Which Pixel Watch models support hand gestures?

Google states that the feature is available on Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Watch 5 with Wear OS version 6.1 or later. That is the documented compatibility scope; the feature should not be assumed to work on earlier Pixel Watch generations or older Wear OS versions. Availability can also change as Google updates the watch software and individual apps.

Before troubleshooting a gesture, check both the watch model and Wear OS version, then install available updates for the watch and its apps. A compatible model alone is not enough if it is running an earlier operating-system release.

What are the two Pixel Watch gestures?

Double pinch

Hold the hand wearing the watch in a usable position and tap your index finger and thumb together twice in quick succession. The watch interprets the two pinches as a command. The available result depends on the screen or app currently open.

#1 Best Overall
Google Pixel Watch 5 (45mm) - Android Smartwatch - Obsidian - Wi-Fi | Gemini Intelligence, domed display, comprehensive health and fitness tracking
  • The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices
  • Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
  • Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
  • Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
  • Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]

Wrist turn

Quickly turn the wrist wearing the watch away from you and then back. This is a separate gesture from double pinch and usually acts as a navigation, dismissal or silencing command. It does not perform the same action in every context.

What does double pinch do on Pixel Watch?

Double pinch has the broadest set of documented actions. Google presents these as context-dependent commands, so an action listed below appears only when the relevant notification, timer, app or card is active.

Notifications

  • Scroll through alerting notifications.
  • Send the first Smart Reply when one is available.

The Smart Reply action applies when the notification offers a reply choice. Double pinch is not a general-purpose text-entry method for composing an arbitrary message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Alarms and timers

  • Snooze a firing alarm.
  • Stop a firing timer.
  • Start or stop an ongoing timer.
  • Start or stop a stopwatch.

The same gesture can therefore mean either a one-time response to an alert or a start/stop control for an activity already running. Check the visible timer or stopwatch state before relying on it.

Camera

  • Take a photo in the Camera app.
  • Start or stop video recording in the Camera app.

These commands apply to the Camera app context documented by Google. They are not a promise that double pinch will trigger the shutter in every camera application.

Media and incoming calls

  • Play or pause media.
  • Answer an incoming call.

When a call is ringing, double pinch answers it. During media playback, the same physical movement is interpreted as play or pause instead.

At a Glance and the watch face

  • Open At a Glance when it appears at the bottom of the watch face.
  • Open the notification tray from the watch face.

At a Glance must be present on the watch face for the related command to apply. Double pinch does not replace every swipe or tap used to navigate the watch interface.

Maps, workouts and cards

  • Switch Maps views.
  • Scroll workout metrics.
  • Scroll the Morning Brief.
  • Scroll a workout summary.
  • Scroll Wallet cards.
  • Start the most recent workout.

These are screen-specific actions. For example, scrolling workout metrics requires a workout view that contains metrics, while switching Maps views requires Maps to be open. Starting the most recent workout is distinct from opening an arbitrary workout type.

How do I use wrist turn?

Turn the watch wrist quickly away from you and back. Wrist turn has fewer documented actions than double pinch, but it is useful for backing out of a view or handling interruptions without touching the display.

Context Wrist-turn result
Expanded notification Close the expanded notification.
Alarm Snooze or dismiss the alarm.
Incoming call Silence the incoming call.
General navigation Universal back.
At a Glance Minimize At a Glance.

Because wrist turn can mean “back,” “close,” “silence” or an alarm response, look at the current screen before making the gesture. Google does not document a wrist-turn action for taking photos or controlling video recording.

Double pinch versus wrist turn: a functional guide

Situation Double pinch Wrist turn
Alerting notifications Scroll notifications; send the first available Smart Reply. Close an expanded notification.
Firing alarm Snooze. Snooze or dismiss.
Timer or stopwatch Stop a firing timer; start or stop an ongoing timer or stopwatch. Not documented.
Camera app Take a photo; start or stop video recording. Not documented.
Media Play or pause. Not documented.
Incoming call Answer. Silence.
Navigation Open the notification tray from the watch face; perform listed app-specific scrolling or switching actions. Universal back.
At a Glance Open it when shown at the bottom of the watch face. Minimize it.

“Not documented” means Google’s hand-gesture guide does not assign that gesture an action in the listed context; it does not establish that a future software update could never add one.

How to turn Pixel Watch hand gestures on or off

Google says one-handed gestures are on by default. You can manage Double pinch and Wrist turn from either the phone companion app or the watch.

From the Pixel Watch phone app

  1. Open the Pixel Watch phone app.
  2. Go to Settings > Gestures > Hand gestures.
  3. Use the controls for Double pinch and Wrist turn to enable or disable each gesture.

From the watch

  1. Open Settings on the watch.
  2. Tap Gestures.
  3. Tap Hand gestures.
  4. Adjust Double pinch and Wrist turn.

The settings page also lets you choose how often gesture hints appear: Always, Daily, Weekly, Monthly or Once. This controls the frequency of instructional hints, not the list of actions available in each app.

Where to learn the gestures on the watch

If the movements are difficult to trigger, use the built-in tutorial rather than guessing at timing or direction. Google documents two paths:

  1. Settings > General > Pixel Tips > Hand gestures, or
  2. Settings > Gestures > Hand gestures > Education > Hand gestures.

After an update, a “What’s new” notification may point to the tutorial. Google also says a “Day 1” tutorial may appear 24 hours after an update. The exact prompt can therefore depend on when the watch software was updated.

  • Save time with things like Google Wallet for contactless payments, turn-by-turn directions using Maps, and event notifications from Calendar
  • Stay connected and productive wherever you go; respond to messages, manage your inbox, and make calls right from your wrist

Hand gestures are not the same as Tilt-to-wake

Tilt-to-wake wakes the display when you tilt the watch. It is a wake behavior, not a double-pinch or wrist-turn command. Google places its toggle under Settings > Gestures and says turning Tilt-to-wake off can extend battery life.

Google’s accessibility overview separately lists Tilt-to-wake, Touch-to-wake, Rotate crown to wake and Screenshot. Those controls can vary or change through software updates. Do not treat the presence of one accessibility gesture as evidence that hand gestures are enabled or supported on the same watch.

What Touch lock and Bedtime mode change

Touch lock disables touch navigation. Bedtime mode disables the watch screen, Tilt-to-wake and touch. The cited Google documentation does not state that either setting disables double pinch or wrist turn. Therefore, do not infer that a gesture has been turned off merely because touch input or the display is unavailable; check the Hand gestures settings and the current mode on the watch.

Why a gesture may appear not to work

Use this sequence to isolate the most likely configuration issue without assuming that every screen supports every command:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm eligibility. Verify that the watch is a Pixel Watch 3, 4 or 5 and that it runs Wear OS 6.1 or later.
  2. Update the software. Install available watch and app updates, since Google’s documented behavior is tied to current software and can change with updates.
  3. Check the individual toggle. In Settings > Gestures > Hand gestures, confirm that Double pinch or Wrist turn is enabled. The same controls are available in the phone app at Settings > Gestures > Hand gestures.
  4. Use the correct movement. Double pinch means two index-finger-and-thumb taps; wrist turn means a quick turn away and back. They are not interchangeable.
  5. Test a documented context. Try a visible notification, an active timer, an incoming call, the Camera app or the watch-face notification tray. A gesture can be recognized but have no visible effect on a screen where Google has not assigned an action.
  6. Open the tutorial. Use either documented Hand gestures education path to review the motion and timing.

Google’s guide describes actions by context rather than promising universal control in every app. If a gesture works in one supported view but not another, that difference can be expected rather than a hardware fault.

Practical examples

Handling a notification while your other hand is busy

When alerting notifications are visible, double pinch can scroll through them. If the notification offers Smart Reply, the first suggested reply can be sent with the same gesture. If you expand a notification and want to close it, use wrist turn.

Managing an alarm or timer

For a firing alarm, double pinch snoozes it, while wrist turn can snooze or dismiss it. For a firing timer, double pinch stops it. For an ongoing timer or stopwatch, double pinch starts or stops the activity.

Taking a remote photo

Open the Camera app and use double pinch to take a photo. In the documented Camera context, double pinch also starts or stops video recording. Wrist turn has no Camera action listed in Google’s guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Controlling a call without touching the screen

When the phone is ringing on the watch, double pinch answers the call. Wrist turn silences the incoming call instead, allowing you to stop the ring without accepting it.

Limits to keep in mind

  • The documented feature set is for Pixel Watch 3, 4 and 5 on Wear OS 6.1 or later.
  • Actions depend on the app, card or screen that is active.
  • Double pinch and wrist turn are separate from Tilt-to-wake and other accessibility gestures.
  • Google does not publish a universal action for every app or screen.
  • The feature set can change through software updates, so the on-watch tutorial and current Hand gestures settings are the authoritative places to check after an update.
