Short answer: choose based on your phone, the exact Galaxy Watch generation and size you’re comparing, and which features matter to you. Google’s Pixel Watch 5 is available in the US in 41 mm and 45 mm sizes, but the evidence here does not support a fair spec-by-spec winner against the Galaxy Watch family as a whole. Samsung’s compatibility information covers Watch9, while the detailed Samsung specifications available here are for Watch8—not Watch9.
Which watch should you choose?
- Consider Pixel Watch 5 if its 41 mm or 45 mm size suits your wrist and its Google features appeal to you. Google says it works with most Pixel and Android phones running Android 12 or newer, and advertises up to 40 hours of battery life.
- Consider a Galaxy Watch if you want Samsung’s watch experience, but compare an exact generation and configuration. The minimum Android version differs by generation, and Watch8 health specifications should not be assumed to describe Watch9.
- Check compatibility before buying. The relevant minimum is Android 12 for Pixel Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch8, and Android 13 for Galaxy Watch9. Samsung says the listed Galaxy Watch models are not supported on iOS.
These are practical decision points, not a head-to-head performance verdict: the cited sources do not establish a comparable independent test of Pixel Watch 5 against a specified Galaxy Watch.

First identify the Galaxy Watch you mean
“Galaxy Watch” is a product family, not one set of specifications. Samsung’s compatibility table includes Watch9 and Watch8, but the detailed Samsung product page cited here is for the 44 mm Bluetooth version of Watch8. Its feature list cannot be carried over to Watch9 without Watch9-specific evidence.
| Model or family | Minimum Android version in cited compatibility information | Evidence available here |
|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel Watch 5 | Android 12.0 or newer for most Pixel and Android phones (Google Store) | Google product, battery, charging, and compatibility claims |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch9 | Android 13.0 or higher (Samsung Australia compatibility page, updated September 9, 2026) | Compatibility information; detailed product specifications and a current local price are not established here |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch8 | Android 12.0 or higher (Samsung Australia compatibility page, updated September 9, 2026) | Detailed specifications cited are for Watch8 44 mm Bluetooth, not Watch9 |
Before comparing prices or features, match the generation, case size, and connectivity type—Bluetooth or LTE—and check availability for your country. For LTE models, include the carrier service cost in your comparison.

Check your phone and ecosystem
Google says Pixel Watch 5 is compatible with most Google Pixel and Android phones running Android 12 or newer. “Most” matters: confirm compatibility for your particular phone and country rather than treating the minimum Android version as a guarantee for every device.
Samsung’s Australia compatibility page lists Android 13 or newer for Galaxy Watch9 and Android 12 or newer for Watch8. It also says the listed watches are not supported on iOS. That is a meaningful difference if you are choosing between Watch9 and Pixel Watch 5 for an older Android phone; the minimum-version figures alone do not establish which phone-specific features will work on non-Samsung Android devices.

Compare health features by exact model
Google’s August 12, 2026 announcement promotes blood-pressure and insulin-resistance trends, breathing emergency detection, personalized strength coaching, and Gemini Intelligence capabilities for Pixel Watch 5. Google’s announcement also says the watch offers its “most accurate GPS route tracking”—Google’s product positioning, not independent validation. Feature availability can vary by country and language, and other requirements may apply; treat these as announced capabilities rather than universally available medical outcomes.
The cited Samsung health-feature information is specifically for Galaxy Watch8. Samsung lists Energy Score, sleep apnea, bedtime guidance, running coaching, blood pressure, ECG, and body composition for that model, with availability varying by model and market. Do not use this Watch8 list as a Watch9 comparison.

For either brand, verify the feature you care about for the exact watch, phone, software version, and country before buying. A feature name on a product page does not by itself establish local availability or suitability for a medical decision.
Battery and charging: claims, not a head-to-head test
Google’s Store listing advertises up to 40 hours of battery life for Pixel Watch 5 and says 15 minutes of charging can provide 15 hours of use. These are Google’s manufacturer claims, not results from a comparable independent test against a specified Galaxy Watch. The cited sources do not provide a matching Galaxy Watch battery figure under the same conditions, so they cannot establish which watch lasts longer in everyday use.

Sizes and prices to compare
Google announced US starting prices of $399 for Pixel Watch 5 in 41 mm and $429 in 45 mm. Those are US launch prices announced August 25, 2026, not a current price comparison with a similarly sized, similarly connected Galaxy Watch. Check local pricing and compare the same size and Bluetooth/LTE configuration; LTE service may add an ongoing carrier cost.

Software support and what to verify before buying
Google’s support schedule says Pixel Watch 5 is guaranteed updates until at least October 2029 and lists its release month as October 2026. That published guarantee is a concrete point to weigh if you plan to keep the watch for several years.
Quick Recap
- Identify the Samsung model: choose the generation, case size, and Bluetooth or LTE version you are actually considering.
- Check your phone: confirm its Android version and compatibility with the exact watch; do not infer that every phone-specific feature works on every Android device.
- Check health-feature availability: verify the feature by model, country, language, phone, and software requirements.
- Compare like with like: use the same country, size class, and connectivity type, and include LTE service where relevant.
- Evaluate battery claims carefully: distinguish manufacturer estimates from independent testing; the cited claims do not provide a direct comparison.
