Those are manufacturer specifications and support estimates, not an independent head-to-head test. Google says its maximum battery figures come from testing in California in 2025 on pre-production hardware and software, with default settings and a median Pixel-user usage profile. Actual endurance depends on settings, cellular use, workouts, notifications, signal conditions and battery age.

What is new on Pixel Watch 4?
A substantially brighter claimed display
Google’s Pixel Watch 4 specification page lists peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits. Peak brightness is a manufacturer maximum, not a promise that the entire interface will remain at that level in every situation. It is most relevant when you are outside, looking at the watch briefly in strong daylight, or trying to read a notification without shielding the screen with your hand.
Pixel Watch 3 owners should treat this as a visibility upgrade rather than assume every interaction will look three times brighter. Brightness management, ambient light, display mode and the content on screen still affect what you see. Google does not provide a matching Pixel Watch 3 peak-brightness figure in the supplied comparison material, so a precise percentage improvement cannot be calculated.

The figures show why case size matters in the new generation. The 45 mm Pixel Watch 4 has a higher stated maximum than the 41 mm model, while both are rated above Google’s earlier-version figure. They do not establish that every owner will see those hours. Google specifically describes the results as approximate and based on a median Pixel-user usage profile, default settings, and pre-production hardware and software tested in California in 2025.
For a Pixel Watch 3 owner, battery headroom can change routines even when the watch still lasts a full day. You may have more flexibility to leave the charger at home for an overnight trip, enable more power-hungry settings, or finish a long day without watching the battery percentage. Those are potential benefits of the higher ceiling, not measured guarantees for your usage.
A dedicated Quick Charge Dock
Google specifies a Quick Charge Dock for Pixel Watch 4. Its support instructions separately describe charging Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 by aligning four charging pins with four contacts. This is a hardware change in the charging system, not merely a new name for the old puck.

The practical consequence is accessory uncertainty. Before buying a Pixel Watch 4, identify which charger you own and verify that the dock supplied or sold for Pixel Watch 4 is compatible with your watch. Keep the Pixel Watch 3 charger for the older watch unless Google explicitly confirms cross-generation support for your particular accessory. A watch can be fully compatible with a phone and still require a different charging accessory.

Google lists Pixel Watch 4 compatibility with most phones running Android 11.0 or newer. Setup requires a Google Account and the Pixel Watch app. “Most” matters: an Android version number alone does not establish compatibility for every phone, regional configuration, or manufacturer skin. Check Google’s current compatibility guidance for your handset before ordering, especially if it is an unusual model or managed by an employer.

How much better is the Pixel Watch 4 battery?
On Google’s stated Always-on Display figures, the 41 mm Pixel Watch 4 has a six-hour higher maximum than the earlier-version figure, while the 45 mm model has a 16-hour higher maximum. Those differences are best understood as additional operating margin. They may reduce the number of emergency top-ups, but they do not tell you how many hours your own watch will deliver between charges.
Battery use rises with activities such as continuous exercise tracking, GPS, cellular connectivity, frequent screen wake-ups and heavy notification traffic. Display brightness and Always-on Display settings also influence consumption. Conversely, a light notification workload and mostly indoor use may bring your Pixel Watch 3 closer to your routine requirement. Can you use a Pixel Watch 3 charger with Pixel Watch 4?
Google documents different charging arrangements: Pixel Watch 4 uses a Quick Charge Dock, while Pixel Watch 3 uses the four-pin/four-contact alignment described for Pixel Watch 2 and 3. That documentation is enough to warn against assuming interchangeability, but it does not establish that every old accessory is electrically or physically incompatible in every circumstance.

Stay with Pixel Watch 3 when the price gap is large
Pixel Watch 3 remains a rational choice when it is materially cheaper and your priorities are already met.
