If your Pixel Watch 4 will not connect, start with the reversible fixes: charge both devices, install pending updates, turn on Bluetooth and location, confirm Wi-Fi or mobile internet, disable airplane mode, allow the Pixel Watch app to find nearby devices, and keep the watch within 0.5 m (1.6 ft) of the phone during Fast Pair. If setup is frozen, restart the watch and try again. Only clear old Bluetooth entries or factory-reset the watch after those checks fail, because a reset erases the watch.
Google’s setup flow is designed for a compatible Android phone; an iPhone cannot complete this Pixel Watch pairing process. Menu names can change as Android and the Pixel Watch app are updated, so use the closest current label shown on your devices.

What to check before pairing
Pairing depends on several services working together. A watch can be powered on yet still fail because the phone has Bluetooth disabled, location access blocked, no internet connection, an outdated app, or a saved pairing record that no longer matches the watch.

- Charge the watch and phone sufficiently for setup. A charger matters when low battery prevents setup; it does not repair Bluetooth, permission, or software problems.
- Install available updates for the watch firmware, the Pixel Watch app, and the phone’s Android software.
- Turn on Bluetooth and Location on the phone.
- Make sure Wi-Fi or mobile data is available. Setup needs an internet connection to complete account and device configuration.
- Turn airplane mode off on both the phone and watch.
- Allow the Pixel Watch app to use nearby-device access. On current Android versions, this permission is generally under Settings > Apps > Pixel Watch > Permissions; the exact wording can vary.
- Keep the watch and phone close together. Google specifies a maximum Fast Pair distance of 0.5 m (1.6 ft).
These are Google’s published setup prerequisites in its Pixel Watch setup guide and pairing troubleshooting instructions.

Use a compatible Android phone
Pixel Watch setup is an Android process. If you are trying to complete it with an iPhone, the Fast Pair and Pixel Watch app flow cannot finish. Use a compatible Android phone instead of repeatedly changing Bluetooth settings on the iPhone. If you recently changed phones, treat that as a transfer or prior-pairing case rather than a first-time setup.
Check the phone’s state, not just the watch
Unlock the phone during the first attempt and leave the Pixel Watch app available in the foreground if the prompt keeps disappearing. Confirm that the phone has working Wi-Fi or mobile data, not merely a connection icon. Account sign-in and device configuration can remain incomplete when internet access is unavailable. Also check that battery-saving or airplane-mode changes have not disabled Bluetooth or location since you began.
Fix Pixel Watch 4 pairing in the safest order
Work through the following sequence. Stop when the watch connects; later steps are more disruptive than earlier ones.
1. Start Fast Pair again at close range
- Unlock the Android phone and place it next to the watch, no more than 0.5 m (1.6 ft) away.
- Verify Bluetooth, Location, Wi-Fi or mobile data, and nearby-device permission are enabled.
- Wake the watch and wait for the pairing prompt on the phone.
- Follow the on-screen code confirmation and account prompts.
If no Fast Pair notification appears, open the Pixel Watch app manually and choose its setup option. Google documents starting setup from the app when the automatic prompt does not show. Keep both screens awake long enough to accept the code; walking away or locking the phone can interrupt discovery.
2. Check whether setup is simply taking too long
Google’s connection guidance treats setup lasting longer than 20 minutes as a reason to move to troubleshooting rather than continuing to wait indefinitely. This is a support threshold, not an average setup time or a failure-rate statistic. If the process has passed that point without completing, cancel the stalled attempt and restart the watch before trying again.
3. Restart a watch that is frozen during setup
A normal restart does not erase the watch. Press and hold the crown for about three seconds, select Restart, and wait until the watch has fully booted. Bring it back next to the phone and retry setup in the Pixel Watch app.
Do not start pairing while the watch is still showing its boot animation or setup transition. Wait until the normal watch interface or setup screen is responsive. Google lists this restart procedure in its setup and pairing help.

4. Hard-reset an unresponsive screen
If the screen will not respond to taps or the crown, hold the crown and side button together for about 35 seconds, or until the Google “G” logo appears. Release the buttons and let the watch start completely before attempting pairing again. This is an emergency restart for an unresponsive device; it is different from a factory reset and is not intended to wipe your data.
Google describes the button sequence and the consequences of a factory reset in its guide to a blank, frozen, or error-message screen.

Remove a stale Bluetooth pairing record
If the watch was previously connected to this phone, or an earlier attempt left a device entry behind, the phone may keep trying to use an obsolete pairing state. Use this cleanup only after checking the prerequisites and restarting the watch.
- Uninstall the Pixel Watch app from the phone.
- Open Settings > Connected devices (the label may vary), view saved Bluetooth or connected-device entries, and choose Forget for every entry belonging to the watch.
- Restart the phone.
- Place the watch near the phone, reinstall or reopen the Pixel Watch app, and start setup again.
Forgetting a device removes the saved relationship, so the watch must be paired again. It does not by itself erase the watch’s local data. Google’s Bluetooth and connection troubleshooting places this stale-entry cleanup after basic checks and a restart.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not forget unrelated Bluetooth accessories while looking for the watch entry. Remove only entries that clearly identify the Pixel Watch, then restart the phone so Android starts discovery with a clean record. If the watch appears more than once, remove each old watch entry before reopening the Pixel Watch app.
When a phone transfer or phone reset is involved
A pairing failure after moving to a new phone, restoring a phone, or factory-resetting the phone can be different from a first-time setup problem. The watch may still contain the prior phone’s relationship, while the newly configured phone has no matching record.
For the specific transfer scenario covered by Google, back up the watch if possible, factory-reset it, pair it to the replacement phone, and optionally restore the backup during setup. Do not assume every “Can’t connect” message requires this sequence; it is aimed at the documented prior-pairing case.
The exact recovery flow is described in Google’s guide to upgrading a Pixel Watch or connected phone without losing data. A backup is useful only if it completed before the reset; data created after the last backup may not be recoverable.
Recommended Free Tools
If the old phone still works, do not start by pairing the watch to both phones. Finish the backup on the old phone, then reset and pair to the replacement phone. If the old phone was erased already, proceed on the new phone knowing that only the available backup can be restored.
Factory-reset the Pixel Watch 4 only as a final software step
If the watch still will not pair after the setup checks, a restart, and stale Bluetooth cleanup, Google recommends a factory reset. Treat it as an escalation, not a routine pairing trick.
Reset from the watch
On the watch, open Settings, go to Disconnect & reset, and confirm the reset. The wording can vary slightly by software version.

Google warns: “When you factory reset your watch, all your apps, settings, and data are erased.” The watch returns to its initial setup state, so you must pair it again and reinstall or restore what you need. Read Google’s reset and frozen-screen guidance before confirming.
A reset cannot compensate for an iPhone, disabled Bluetooth, denied permissions, or a phone with no internet. If one of those conditions remains, the freshly reset watch can fail at the same point. Correct the phone’s prerequisites first, then use the reset only when the earlier steps have been exhausted.

|---|---|---|
| Check charge, updates, radios, permissions, internet, and distance | None | Every pairing attempt |
| Restart the watch | Reversible; no intentional wipe | Setup is frozen or has exceeded 20 minutes |
| Hard-reset with crown and side button | Reversible emergency restart | The screen is unresponsive |
| Forget saved watch entries and retry | Saved pairing is removed; pairing must be repeated | A previous or stale Bluetooth record remains |
| Factory reset and unpair | Apps, settings, and watch data are erased | Earlier troubleshooting fails, or the documented phone-transfer case applies |
Use the symptom to choose the next step
The phone never sees the watch
Keep the devices within 0.5 m (1.6 ft), unlock the phone, enable Bluetooth and Location, and confirm nearby-device permission for the Pixel Watch app. If Fast Pair still does not appear, launch setup inside the app. Check airplane mode on both devices before restarting either one.
Fast Pair appears, but setup will not finish
Confirm Wi-Fi or mobile data and install pending updates. If the process remains stuck beyond 20 minutes, restart the watch, wait for a complete boot, and retry. A charger is relevant only if either device lacks enough battery to remain powered through setup.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The watch connects, then immediately disconnects
Check that airplane mode has not been enabled and that the phone’s Bluetooth and nearby-device permission remain on. Restart the watch and phone. If an old watch entry is listed under connected devices, use the uninstall, forget, restart, and retry sequence before considering a reset.
The watch was paired to another phone
Do not keep attempting first-time pairing indefinitely. Determine whether this is the documented transfer situation, back up the watch if available, then reset and pair it to the current phone as Google describes. Restore the backup only after the new pairing succeeds.
The watch is blank or completely frozen
Try the crown-and-side-button hard reset for about 35 seconds or until the “G” logo appears. If it starts normally, retry setup. A factory reset is a separate action and should be used only when the connection steps do not work.
The app says the watch is connected, but setup still looks incomplete
Leave the phone and watch close together and allow synchronization to finish. The connected state should appear in the Pixel Watch app, not merely as a watch name in Android’s general Bluetooth list. If the app immediately asks you to pair again, regard the connection as incomplete and repeat the relevant setup or cleanup step.

How to tell whether pairing succeeded
The Pixel Watch app should show the watch as connected after setup completes. Open the app and verify that the watch appears as the active device rather than only as a discoverable or pending device. Let synchronization finish before changing Bluetooth settings or moving out of range. If setup asks you to repeat pairing immediately, treat that as an incomplete connection and continue with the symptom-specific steps above.
When a charger is—and is not—the answer
Google says both devices should be sufficiently charged before setup. Connect the watch to a charger when it is low, will not stay powered on, or shuts down during the process. Confirm that any charger listing is specifically compatible with Pixel Watch 4.
A charger cannot correct disabled Bluetooth, denied location or nearby-device permission, an outdated Pixel Watch app, airplane mode, a stale pairing record, or a software state left by a previous phone. Those causes require the settings and recovery steps in this guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. After the reset: a clean pairing sequence
- Charge the reset watch and phone enough to remain on during setup.
- Install current phone, watch, and Pixel Watch app updates.
- Turn on Bluetooth, Location, Wi-Fi or mobile data, and nearby-device permission; disable airplane mode.
- Keep the phone and watch within 0.5 m (1.6 ft).
- Open the Pixel Watch app and begin setup if Fast Pair does not appear.
- Confirm the matching code and complete the account and device prompts.
- Wait for the app to show the watch as connected before restoring optional settings or backup data.
If this clean sequence fails after a factory reset, record the exact on-screen message, the phone model and Android version, and whether the watch was previously paired. Those details are what Google support needs to distinguish a setup prerequisite problem from a transfer or device-specific fault.
Questions people ask about Pixel Watch 4 pairing
Can I pair a Pixel Watch 4 with an iPhone?
No. Google’s Pixel Watch setup flow requires a compatible Android phone. An iPhone cannot complete the Pixel Watch app pairing process.
How close should my phone be during Fast Pair?
Keep the phone and watch no more than 0.5 m (1.6 ft) apart. That is Google’s stated Fast Pair distance, so place them side by side rather than across a room.
Why is Location required when I already turned on Bluetooth?
Location is one of Google’s setup prerequisites on the phone. Turn it on along with Bluetooth, internet access, and nearby-device permission before retrying discovery.
What if the Fast Pair pop-up never appears?
Confirm the prerequisites, wake the watch, and keep it close to the unlocked phone. Then open the Pixel Watch app and start setup manually; Google provides that path when automatic Fast Pair does not show.
How long should I wait if setup appears stuck?
Google’s connection guidance uses more than 20 minutes as a point to stop waiting and troubleshoot. Restart the watch, let it boot completely, and retry rather than leaving a stalled setup running indefinitely.

Will restarting erase my watch?
No. A normal restart is reversible. Hold the crown for about three seconds, choose Restart, and wait for the watch to finish booting. A factory reset is different and erases apps, settings, and watch data.
What does the crown-and-side-button reset do?
Holding both buttons for about 35 seconds, or until the “G” logo appears, is for a blank or unresponsive screen. It is an emergency restart, not the factory-reset command.
Should I factory-reset after every connection error?
No. Start with charge, updates, Bluetooth, Location, internet, airplane-mode, permission, distance, and a normal restart. Clear stale Bluetooth entries next. Reserve factory reset for failures that persist or for the documented prior-phone transfer situation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWill a factory reset preserve my apps and settings?
No. Google states that a factory reset erases all apps, settings, and watch data. Back up first when the watch is usable, and restore only after the watch pairs successfully with the current phone.
Is buying a new charger a fix for pairing?
Only if the watch or phone lacks enough charge to stay powered during setup. Verify Pixel Watch 4 compatibility, but do not expect a charger to fix permissions, Bluetooth, software, airplane mode, or stale pairing records.

When should I factory-reset the watch?
Only after prerequisite checks, a restart, and stale Bluetooth cleanup fail, or when the documented phone-transfer scenario applies. A reset erases apps, settings, and data.
The Bottom Line
Start with charge, updates, Bluetooth, Location, internet, airplane mode, nearby-device permission, and the 0.5 m distance. Restart a frozen watch and use the Pixel Watch app if Fast Pair is absent. Remove stale entries only after those checks. Factory-reset last—and only after backing up when possible—because it erases the watch.
