Pixel Watch 3 Review: Hey, at Least There’s a Bigger Option

The Pixel Watch 3 feels like the version Google should have made sooner: familiar, polished, and finally available in a larger size. The new 45mm option gives the watch more presence on the wrist, more screen space for glances and workouts, and a better fit for people who found the earlier models too small.

Google has also sharpened the parts that matter most day to day, from brighter displays and smoother Wear OS performance to more serious health and fitness tools. Battery life is better in some real-world situations, though this still is not a multi-day endurance watch, and charging remains part of the routine.

There are still caveats. The Pixel Watch 3 is expensive, difficult to repair, best suited to Android users, and most appealing if you are already comfortable living in Google’s ecosystem. Even so, the bigger size and fitness upgrades make it a much more convincing smartwatch than before.

Design and the New Larger Size

The biggest design change to the Pixel Watch 3 is also the most obvious: Google finally offers a larger case. The familiar 41mm model remains, but it is now joined by a 45mm version that immediately makes the watch feel more competitive with the Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch, and Garmin Venu lines. For anyone who liked Google’s rounded pebble aesthetic but found the earlier Pixel Watches too small, the new size is the headline upgrade.

Google Pixel Watch 3 (45mm) Latest Model - Matte Black Aluminum Case - Obsidian Band - Wi-Fi (Renewed)
  • The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
  • Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
  • Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
  • Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
  • Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]

The 45mm Pixel Watch 3 gives the interface more room to breathe. Notifications are easier to read, workout stats are less cramped, and complications on watch faces feel more useful at a glance. It also looks more proportionate on larger wrists, where the previous 41mm model could resemble a dress watch trying to be a fitness watch. Google has not reinvented the design language here, though. The domed glass, circular case, and minimalist profile are still the core identity, and the watch remains one of the softer, less aggressively sporty wearables on the market.

That rounded glass continues to be both attractive and slightly nerve-racking. It gives the Pixel Watch 3 its polished, seamless look, but it also leaves the edges feeling more exposed than watches with raised bezels or tougher, more utilitarian cases. The design is elegant for daily wear and office use, yet it does not inspire the same confidence as a rugged Garmin or even Samsung’s more traditional Galaxy Watch styling when hiking, climbing, or scraping past gym equipment.

What the larger size changes

  • Readability: The 45mm model makes messages, maps, fitness metrics, and app screens easier to digest quickly.
  • Comfort: The 41mm version is still the better fit for smaller wrists and sleep tracking, while the 45mm model suits users who want presence and screen space.
  • Battery potential: The larger case gives Google more room to work with, though size alone does not make it a multi-day endurance watch.
  • Style: Both sizes preserve the clean Pixel Watch look, so the choice is more about wrist fit than a different design personality.

The band system remains proprietary, which is one of the more frustrating parts of the design. Google’s mechanism is secure and visually tidy once attached, but it limits compatibility with the huge universe of standard watch straps unless you buy adapters. If you already own Pixel Watch bands, staying within Google’s accessory ecosystem may be convenient; if not, it can make experimenting with styles more expensive than it should be.

Build quality feels premium, and the watch is comfortable enough for all-day wear, including workouts and sleep. The curved underside sits naturally on the wrist, and the digital crown remains a pleasant way to scroll through lists without constantly covering the display with a finger. Still, the Pixel Watch 3 is not a watch designed around repairability. Like previous models, it feels more like a sealed consumer gadget than a long-term timepiece. That matters when prices climb and when a scratched or cracked wearable can be harder to justify replacing than a phone case or earbuds.

Overall, the new 45mm option fixes one of the Pixel Watch line’s most persistent shortcomings without sacrificing the charm of the original design. It does not solve every concern, especially around durability, proprietary bands, and repair options, but it makes the Pixel Watch 3 feel less niche. For the first time, Google’s smartwatch comes in a size range that can comfortably serve both people who want something compact and those who want a modern smartwatch that actually looks and feels substantial.

Display, Performance, and Wear OS Experience

The Pixel Watch 3’s display is one of its most noticeable day-to-day upgrades, especially if you pick the new larger case size. Google has trimmed the bezels compared with earlier models, so the watch face feels less cramped and complications have more room to breathe. The rounded glass still gives the watch a soft, pebble-like look, but the screen now feels more usable for reading notifications, checking maps, or glancing at workout stats mid-run.

Brightness is a major strength. The Actua display reaches a claimed 2,000 nits, which makes outdoor visibility much better in direct sun than on the original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2. It can also drop down very low for nighttime use, helping the always-on display feel less intrusive on a bedside table or in a dark room. The refresh rate can scale up to 60Hz, and that makes scrolling through tiles, app lists, and messages look smoother than before. It is not a radical redesign, but it removes some of the tiny annoyances that made older Pixel Watches feel like elegant devices fighting against a small canvas.

Performance feels polished, not dramatically new

In regular use, the Pixel Watch 3 is quick and consistent. Apps open promptly, swipes register cleanly, and Google’s tile-based interface remains one of the better smartwatch navigation systems. The rotating crown is still the best way to move through longer lists, while the side button gives fast access to recent apps. The haptics are crisp enough to make timers, alarms, and notifications feel distinct without being harsh.

The hardware platform is similar to the Pixel Watch 2, built around Qualcomm’s wearable chipset with a low-power co-processor handling background tasks. That means the Pixel Watch 3 is not a massive leap in raw speed, but it does feel refined. The benefit shows up less as benchmark-style power and more as fewer pauses, smoother animations, and better handling of continuous features like the always-on display and health tracking.

Wear OS is better, but still has boundaries

Wear OS on the Pixel Watch 3 is clean, attractive, and deeply tied into Google’s services. Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Wallet, Assistant, YouTube Music, and Home all feel at home here. Notifications are easy to act on, voice dictation is useful for quick replies, and turn-by-turn walking directions are genuinely handy on the wrist. The app selection is stronger than it used to be, with access to staples such as Spotify, Strava, WhatsApp, and other common fitness or messaging tools.

  • Best experience: Android users who already rely on Google apps and services.
  • Best hardware match: the 45mm model, where the larger display makes Wear OS feel less constrained.
  • Main limitation: no iPhone support, which keeps Apple Watch owners firmly outside the Pixel Watch ecosystem.
  • Ongoing friction: some health and wellness insights still lean on Fitbit integration and may feel fragmented compared with Samsung Health or Apple Fitness.

Compared with the Apple Watch, Google’s interface feels less dense and a bit more glanceable, but Apple still has the broader accessory market, stronger iPhone integration, and more mature third-party watch apps. Against Samsung’s Galaxy Watch lineup, the Pixel Watch 3 has a more elegant design and a cleaner Google-first software feel, while Samsung often wins on durability options, advanced health features for Galaxy phone users, and frequent discounts. The Pixel Watch 3’s display and Wear OS experience are easily the best Google has shipped, but the watch still makes the most sense for Android users who want Google’s version of a smartwatch rather than the most feature-packed wearable at the price.

Health and Fitness Tracking Upgrades

The Pixel Watch 3 feels most improved when it is acting less like a tiny phone and more like a training partner. Google has leaned harder into Fitbit’s strengths this year, adding more detailed running tools, better readiness guidance, and a more useful morning snapshot of your health metrics. The basics are still here: heart rate tracking, sleep tracking, blood oxygen estimates, ECG support, skin temperature trends, stress management, and automatic workout detection. What has changed is that the watch does a better job turning those readings into something you can actually use.

Google Pixel Watch 3 (41mm) 2024 Model - Android Smartwatch, Heart Rate Tracking, Fitbit Advanced Running, Fitness Insights, 24-Hour Battery - Matte Black Aluminum Case - Obsidian Band - LTE
  • The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 41mm screen is twice as bright and 10% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
  • Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]; and receive a daily target based on cardio load and readiness levels

Runners get the biggest upgrade. The Pixel Watch 3 can build custom runs with warmups, intervals, target pace, heart rate zones, and cooldowns, then guide you from the wrist with real-time alerts. Post-run summaries now include form-related metrics such as cadence, stride length, vertical oscillation, and ground contact time, bringing it closer to what Garmin, Polar, and Apple offer to more serious athletes. Cardio Load and Target Load are also useful additions, giving you a clearer sense of whether you are training productively, coasting, or pushing too hard. These features make the watch feel much more credible for people who run several times a week, not just casual step counters.

Fitbit’s health tracking remains one of the Pixel Watch line’s biggest advantages. Sleep data is easy to understand, the Daily Readiness Score is a helpful shorthand for deciding whether to train hard or take it easy, and the new Morning Brief collects overnight metrics, weather, and fitness guidance into a digestible check-in. Heart rate accuracy is generally strong for a smartwatch, especially during steady workouts, and the improved multi-path sensor design helps during movement. As always, wrist-based sensors can still struggle with abrupt intervals, loose fit, tattoos, cold weather, or strength training, so anyone relying on precise heart rate data for structured training should still consider a chest strap-compatible fitness watch.

  • Best new fitness additions: custom run workouts, real-time pace and heart rate alerts, Cardio Load, Target Load, and improved running form metrics.
  • Strong everyday health tools: sleep tracking, ECG, stress tracking, skin temperature trends, breathing rate, resting heart rate, and SpO2 estimates.
  • Still less athlete-focused than Garmin: battery life, recovery analytics, external sensor support, and offline mapping remain better on dedicated sports watches.

The catch is that Fitbit’s best experience still comes with a subscription. Buyers get a trial of Fitbit Premium, but some deeper insights, guided programs, and expanded wellness features sit behind the monthly fee after that. That makes the already premium-priced Pixel Watch 3 feel more expensive over time, especially compared with rivals that include more training analysis upfront. Apple also has a richer third-party fitness app ecosystem, while Garmin remains the better pick for marathon training, hiking, and multi-day tracking. Still, for Android users who want polished health tracking without wearing a bulky sports watch, the Pixel Watch 3 is a meaningful step forward. It is not the most advanced fitness watch in the category, but it is finally good enough that its health features feel like a reason to buy it rather than just a bonus.

Battery Life and Charging

The Pixel Watch 3 does not suddenly become a multi-day endurance watch, but it is noticeably easier to live with than earlier models, especially if you choose the new 45mm version. Google still rates both sizes for up to 24 hours with the always-on display enabled, or up to 36 hours in Battery Saver mode, but the larger case has more room for a bigger battery and feels less fragile in day-to-day use. In practical terms, the 45mm model is the one to buy if battery anxiety has been your main hesitation with the Pixel Watch line.

With the always-on display, sleep tracking, notifications, a short workout, and routine health monitoring active, the smaller 41mm Pixel Watch 3 remains a charge-it-every-day device. It can get through a full waking day and a night of sleep tracking, but there is not much cushion if you stream music over LTE, use GPS for a run, or forget to top it up before bed. The 45mm version gives you more breathing room. It is still not in the same longevity class as a Garmin Venu, Fitbit Sense, or some Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra-style endurance options, but it better matches the expectations of a premium smartwatch.

Battery Saver mode is more useful this year because it can stretch runtime without making the watch feel completely stripped down. You still get core watch functions and enough smart behavior for it to feel like a Pixel Watch, not just a digital timepiece. For travel days, late nights, or times when you know you will not be near the charger, it is a practical fallback. The trade-off is that features like the always-on display and some background activity are reduced, so it is not the mode most people will want to use all the time.

Charging is faster, but still proprietary

Charging speed is one of the better quality-of-life improvements. The Pixel Watch 3 can recover enough battery in a short session to make sleep tracking or a workout less stressful, and the 41mm model charges faster than before. A quick top-up while showering or getting ready can often bridge the gap between daytime use and overnight tracking. That matters because Google’s health features are most useful when the watch is worn consistently, not parked on a charger for long stretches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The downside is that Google still relies on a proprietary charging puck. It is compact and easy enough to pack, but it adds another cable to manage and is not as convenient as universal Qi-style charging. If you forget the charger on a trip, you are unlikely to rescue the watch with a random wireless pad. That is especially frustrating on a device at this price, where buyers may reasonably expect more flexibility and better long-term accessory support.

Use case What to expect
Always-on display, normal notifications, sleep tracking About a day of use, with the 45mm model offering more margin
GPS workout or LTE use Noticeably faster drain, especially on the 41mm model
Battery Saver mode Up to 36 hours, with reduced background behavior and display features
Short charging sessions Useful for topping up before bed or before a workout

Overall, battery life is improved enough to remove some of the friction from owning a Pixel Watch, but not enough to become a standout strength. Apple Watch users will find the routine familiar, Samsung buyers may see similar day-to-day results depending on model and settings, and fitness-watch fans will still see Google’s endurance as modest. The larger Pixel Watch 3 is the best version yet for people who want Google’s smartwatch experience without constantly watching the percentage, but daily charging remains part of the deal.

Smart Features and Google Ecosystem Integration

The Pixel Watch 3 is at its best when it is acting like a small, wrist-mounted extension of a Pixel phone. Notifications are handled cleanly, replies are quick through voice dictation or the tiny keyboard, and Google Assistant remains one of the stronger voice assistants on a smartwatch. Asking for timers, weather, smart home controls, calendar details, or quick message replies feels natural, and the watch generally responds fast enough that it does not feel like a chore compared with pulling out a phone.

Google’s own apps give the watch a more complete feel than earlier Pixel Watch models. Google Maps is especially useful for walking directions, transit checks, and quick navigation prompts, while Google Wallet makes contactless payments painless. Gmail and Calendar are better integrated than before, and YouTube Music support is useful for offline playlists during workouts. The watch also benefits from Wear OS basics like third-party app support, customizable tiles, and a Play Store that is still smaller than a phone’s but much healthier than it used to be.

Where the Pixel Watch 3 feels most connected

  • Pixel phone pairing: setup is simple, notification syncing is reliable, and features like camera controls feel purpose-built for Google’s phones.
  • Smart home controls: the Google Home app makes it easy to adjust lights, thermostats, cameras, and routines from the wrist.
  • Safety features: fall detection, emergency SOS, Safety Check, and location sharing add practical value, especially for runners or people who often commute alone.
  • Call handling: the speaker and microphone are good enough for short calls, and the LTE model can stand in for a phone in a pinch.

The catch is that the best experience is still clearly designed around Android, and more specifically around Google’s own ecosystem. iPhone users should not consider this a real Apple Watch alternative because the Pixel Watch 3 does not support iOS. Samsung phone owners can use it, but they may find some overlap or friction compared with a Galaxy Watch, especially if they already rely on Samsung Health, Samsung Wallet, or Galaxy-specific features. Google has improved the Pixel Watch as a general Android watch, but it still rewards people who have already bought into Pixel, Fitbit, Google Home, and Google services.

Rank #3
Google Pixel Watch 3 (45mm) 2024 Model - Android Smartwatch, Heart Rate Tracking, Fitbit Advanced Running, Fitness Insights, 24-Hour Battery - Matte Hazel Aluminum Case - Hazel Band - Wi-Fi

  • Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]

Fitbit integration is both a strength and a source of irritation. The health dashboard is approachable, the workout and recovery data is more useful than it used to be, and the app presents long-term trends in a way that does not feel overly clinical. At the same time, Fitbit Premium continues to make the overall package feel more expensive than the sticker price suggests. Some insights, guided programs, and deeper wellness features sit behind a subscription, which is harder to accept on a watch that already costs as much as many premium competitors.

Compared with rivals, the Pixel Watch 3 feels smarter and more polished than many generic Wear OS watches, but it does not fully erase the advantages of the Apple Watch for iPhone users or the Galaxy Watch for Samsung loyalists. Apple still leads in app depth, accessory availability, and repair infrastructure. Samsung offers strong Android competition with often better durability options and frequent discounts. Google’s advantage is coherence: Assistant, Maps, Wallet, Home, Fitbit, and Pixel features all come together in a way that finally feels mature. The downside is that the watch remains relatively pricey, not especially repair-friendly, and most compelling when your digital life already runs through Google.

Price, Competition, and Who Should Buy It

The Pixel Watch 3 starts at a premium price, and the new 45mm model pushes it further into flagship smartwatch territory. The smaller 41mm version remains the more approachable option, but adding LTE, choosing the larger case, or buying extra bands quickly makes this feel less like a casual accessory and more like a serious purchase. That would be easier to swallow if Google had solved every lingering issue, but buyers still have to accept limited repairability, short long-term battery expectations compared with some rivals, and the fact that the watch is at its best only when paired with an Android phone.

Against the Apple Watch Series 10, the Pixel Watch 3 finally feels closer in polish, especially with the larger screen option and stronger fitness features. Apple still has the advantage in app support, serviceability, accessory choice, and overall ecosystem maturity, but that only matters if you use an iPhone. For Android users, the more relevant comparison is Samsung’s Galaxy Watch lineup. Samsung typically offers more case styles, frequent discounts, and stronger durability credentials, while Google counters with a cleaner Wear OS interface, better Fitbit integration, and a design that looks more like a traditional rounded watch than a mini phone on the wrist.

Garmin is the tougher rival for anyone who prioritizes training and battery life over smart features. A Forerunner, Venu, or Vivoactive can run for days longer, provide deeper workout analysis, and offer better outdoor activity tools. The Pixel Watch 3 is more convenient for notifications, apps, payments, calls, and Google services, but it is not the best pick for marathon training, multi-day trips, or users who hate charging every day or two. Fitbit’s own trackers also complicate the picture: they cost less, last longer, and cover the basics well, though they lack the Pixel Watch’s richer app experience and more elegant interface.

The Pixel Watch 3 makes the most sense for Android users who want the most Google-flavored smartwatch available and were previously put off by the small size of earlier models. The 45mm version is the real story here: it makes the watch easier to read, better for workouts, and more credible next to Apple and Samsung flagships. Buy it if you value comfort, looks, Fitbit health tracking, Google Wallet, Maps, Assistant, and a smooth Wear OS experience. Skip it if you want the lowest price, the longest battery life, full repair confidence, or a watch that works equally well across phone platforms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 45mm Pixel Watch 3 worth choosing over the 41mm model?

Yes, if you want a more readable screen and better battery life, the 45mm Pixel Watch 3 is the more practical choice. The larger display makes notifications, maps, workouts, and on-watch typing easier to use, while the bigger battery helps it last longer between charges. The 41mm version is still better for smaller wrists or anyone who prefers a lighter, more discreet smartwatch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does the Pixel Watch 3 battery actually last?

The Pixel Watch 3 can generally get through a full day of normal use, including notifications, health tracking, and some workout logging. The 45mm model has more breathing room and is the better pick if battery life is a priority. Heavy GPS workouts, always-on display use, and sleep tracking will still mean charging regularly.

Is the Pixel Watch 3 good for fitness and health tracking?

The Pixel Watch 3 is a strong fitness watch for casual and moderately serious users, especially with Fitbit integration, improved running metrics, heart-rate tracking, sleep tracking, and readiness-style insights. It works well for daily activity, gym sessions, runs, and general wellness trends. Athletes who need advanced training tools, longer GPS battery life, or deep recovery analysis may still prefer Garmin, Polar, or certain Apple Watch models.

Does the Pixel Watch 3 work with iPhones?

No, the Pixel Watch 3 is designed for Android phones and is best with Pixel phones. iPhone users should look at the Apple Watch instead, since Apple’s wearable has much tighter integration with iOS. Some Pixel Watch features also work best inside Google’s ecosystem, including Google Wallet, Assistant, Maps, and Fitbit services.

How does the Pixel Watch 3 compare with the Galaxy Watch and Apple Watch?

The Pixel Watch 3 has a cleaner Google-focused experience and a polished design, while Samsung’s Galaxy Watch models often offer more hardware variety, tougher builds, and better value during sales. The Apple Watch remains the stronger choice for iPhone users and still leads in app support and ecosystem depth. The Pixel Watch 3 makes the most sense for Android users who want Fitbit health tracking and Google services in a simple, attractive smartwatch.

Bottom Line

The Pixel Watch 3 finally feels less compromised, especially now that Google offers a larger size with better readability, stronger battery life, and a more useful fitness experience. Wear OS remains smooth and Google’s health tracking is genuinely improving, even if some features still work best inside Fitbit’s paid ecosystem.

If you’re an Android user who wants the most polished Google-first smartwatch, this is the one to get—just choose the 45mm model if your wrist can handle it. But if repairability, long-term value, or cross-platform flexibility matter most, rivals from Samsung, Garmin, and Apple still make the Pixel Watch 3 a tougher sell.
