It gathers information your other apps already hold about selected people—such as recent calls and messages, shared location, dates, memos, and alerts—and presents it in one place. You can add up to 16 VIPs under Google’s current help guidance. The person you add can use an iPhone or any Android phone; they do not need a Pixel.
Which Pixel phones support Pixel VIPs?
Google’s current support documentation sets the hardware requirement at Pixel 6 or later, including Pixel Fold. Pixel VIPs is therefore not documented as available on Pixel 5a, Pixel 5, or earlier generations. Google has not published a country-by-country availability matrix or a definitive rollout calendar, so a compatible model does not guarantee that every account or region will see the feature at the same moment.

On an eligible phone, open Google Contacts and look under Organize → Pixel VIPs. If that entry is missing, update the relevant Google apps, confirm that the phone is signed in normally, and check again later. Google specifically recommends current versions of Pixel Weather, WhatsApp, and Google Contacts for the feature.

What does Pixel VIPs show?
Pixel VIPs is a focused view of information that other apps have already collected. The exact cards and suggestions depend on your permissions, installed apps, available data, and the contact’s own sharing choices.
Communication and contact details
- Recent calls, including the last call shown by the Phone app.
- Recent messages from Android Messages (Google Messages).
- Recent messages and calls from WhatsApp, when WhatsApp data and notifications are available.
- Contact details such as phone numbers, birthdays, and addresses.
Dates, notes, and suggestions
- Significant dates associated with the contact.
- Memos you add for that person.
- Activity suggestions based on popular results and preferences you enter.
- Notifications from Messages or WhatsApp that meet the feature’s conditions.
Location-based information
When a VIP chooses to share their location through Google Maps, the widget can show that location and use it to determine the person’s local time and weather. A location card is therefore conditional: a saved email address or ordinary contact entry does not activate it.
Crisis alerts
The widget can surface crisis alerts relevant to a VIP. Whether an alert appears depends on the underlying service data and the permissions available on your phone; it is not a guarantee that every emergency event will be displayed.

How many people can I add to Pixel VIPs?
The current Google Pixel Phone Help page allows up to 16 people. That limit applies to the Pixel owner’s VIP list. It does not require those people to install an app or own Pixel hardware. The older limit of eight came from the June 2025 launch announcement and should be treated as historical context only.
How to set up Pixel VIPs
- Open Google Contacts on a Pixel 6 or later, including Pixel Fold.
- Tap Organize, then choose Pixel VIPs.
- Select the contacts you want to prioritize, up to the current limit of 16.
- Review and grant the permissions requested during setup. The available cards depend on which permissions you allow.
- For home-screen access, open the phone’s widget picker, choose the Contacts widget, and add the Pixel VIPs view.
- Open the new widget and check that each person’s contact information and available activity appear as expected.
Google also includes VIPs among favorite contacts. Depending on your notification configuration, that favorite status can allow calls or messages from them to bypass Do Not Disturb. Verify your own Do Not Disturb and Modes settings if you need that behavior; adding someone to Pixel VIPs does not replace those system controls.
Does my contact need a Pixel?
No. The Pixel requirement applies to the phone belonging to the person creating and viewing the VIP list. The contact you designate can use any iOS or Android device. Their device type does not itself provide access to your widget or your phone’s call and message history.
Does adding someone to Pixel VIPs share their location?
No. Adding a person to your contacts, or selecting them as a VIP, does not turn on location sharing. Google says the person must deliberately share their location through Google Maps while signed in with the email address that matches the address in your contact record. They can manage or stop that sharing in Maps.
If a location card is missing, check both sides of the arrangement:
- Confirm that the contact is sharing location in Google Maps.
- Confirm that the email address in your contact matches the Google account used for that sharing.
- Check that Pixel VIPs has the permissions requested during setup.
- Allow time for the underlying Maps data to update before treating the absence as an error.
Does Pixel VIPs share my messages with Google?
Google’s documentation describes Pixel VIPs as accessing, organizing, and highlighting information already collected by other apps. The current help page says preferences you enter for suggestions are stored on the device only.

For sensitive communication data, Google’s June 2025 announcement states: Sensitive data – like your call log or content of your messages – never leaves your device.
That statement is specifically about sensitive call-log and message-content data. It should not be expanded into a claim that every Pixel VIPs data type or every processing operation is strictly local. Location, contact records, weather, and other cards still depend on the services and permissions that supply them.
For a permission-by-permission check, read the prompts shown during setup and review Google Maps location-sharing controls. Google’s statements are the company’s own descriptions, not an independent privacy audit. The relevant references are Google Pixel Phone Help and the June 2025 announcement.

Google warns that WhatsApp prioritization may not work as expected when WhatsApp is running in Companion Mode. That includes linked tablets, secondary phones, and computers. Pixel VIPs is designed primarily around WhatsApp on the main phone, so a linked-device configuration can prevent the expected notification behavior.

If you use a linked or companion device
- Identify whether the WhatsApp account is being used mainly through a tablet, secondary phone, or computer.
- Return WhatsApp to the primary phone for the test.
- Check whether the VIP’s messages or calls are prioritized on that main device.
If you are not using Companion Mode
- Open WhatsApp and review its contact and contact-sync settings.
- Correct any setting that prevents the phone from matching WhatsApp contacts with the corresponding Google Contacts entries.
- Restart the Pixel phone.
- Open Pixel VIPs again and test a new message or call.
These checks address the two causes Google identifies: companion-device use and contact synchronization. If ordinary WhatsApp notifications work but VIP prioritization still does not, recheck app updates and the permissions granted during Pixel VIPs setup.
What information does Pixel VIPs require?
The feature combines several data sources rather than creating a separate social profile. Depending on your setup, it may read:
- Contact records, including phone numbers, birthdays, addresses, and matching email addresses.
- Phone data for the last call.
- Recent Android Messages activity.
- WhatsApp messages and calls.
- Google Maps location shared by the VIP.
- Weather and local-time information derived from that shared location.
- Your own memos and suggestion preferences.
A card that does not appear usually means its source data is unavailable, permission was declined, the contact does not use the relevant app, or the contact has not enabled the required sharing. Pixel VIPs does not manufacture missing history or infer a location merely because a person is marked as important.

Availability checks when Pixel VIPs is missing
Use this order so you can separate an eligibility problem from a data or permission problem:
- Check the model in Settings → About phone and confirm it is a Pixel 6 or newer, including Pixel Fold.
- Update Google Contacts, Pixel Weather, and WhatsApp from the applicable app store.
- Open Google Contacts and look for Organize → Pixel VIPs.
- Review the permissions requested by Contacts and the widget during setup.
- Confirm that the contact actually has recent calls or messages, uses the relevant app, or has shared location; otherwise there may be nothing to display.
- If the menu remains absent on eligible hardware, account or regional rollout differences may be involved. Google has not published a definitive country schedule, so do not assume a missing menu indicates a damaged phone.
Pixel VIPs: the practical compatibility summary
| Use case | Supported or required | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Create and view a VIP list | Pixel 6 or later, including Pixel Fold | Google does not state universal country availability |
| Add a person who uses an iPhone | Supported | The VIP’s phone does not need to be a Pixel |
| Add a person who uses Android | Supported | The VIP’s phone does not need to be the same Android brand |
| Show location | Supported only when the VIP shares through Google Maps | The shared account email must match the contact record |
| Show WhatsApp activity | Supported when app data, permissions, and contact matching are available | Companion Mode can prevent prioritization |
| Use the full current list capacity | Up to 16 VIPs | Eight was the June 2025 launch limit, not the current help-page limit |
What Pixel VIPs is—and is not
Pixel VIPs is a convenience layer over Google Contacts, Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, Maps, and related data. It puts selected people, recent activity, dates, notes, alerts, and optional location context close to the home screen. It is not a separate messaging service, and selecting a VIP does not force that person to install software, share their location, or use a Pixel.
The safest expectation is conditional visibility: you will see only what the source apps contain and what the relevant permissions and sharing choices allow. On supported Pixel hardware, the setup path is Google Contacts → Organize → Pixel VIPs; the current documented capacity is 16 people.
