On April 19, 2024, 9to5Google reported real-life photographs attributed to Russian outlet Rozetked that appeared to show a smaller Google Pixel 9 Pro prototype. The unit’s boot screen reportedly listed 16 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, while the images showed a redesigned camera bar and other hardware details. These were leaked prototype images, not an official Google announcement or a complete retail specification sheet.
What the Pixel 9 Pro leak showed
According to 9to5Google, Rozetked shared photographs of a physical handset identified in fastboot mode as “caiman.” The report described it as likely being the smaller Pixel 9 Pro, rather than the larger rumored Pro XL. The photographs provided an early look at the hardware design following earlier renders, but the handset’s final retail identity and specifications were not independently established by the images alone.

Boot screen reportedly lists 16 GB of RAM
The photographed unit’s boot screen reportedly showed 16 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. 9to5Google characterized the memory figure as 4 GB more than the Pixel 8 Pro’s 12 GB. A prototype readout is evidence of that unit’s apparent configuration, not proof that every retail model would have the same storage or that the figures guarantee particular performance.
The later-released Pixel 9 Pro did use 16 GB of RAM, so that part of the leak was consistent with the eventual specification. The reported 128 GB storage should still be treated as the configuration shown on the photographed unit, not as a claim that all versions had only that capacity.
#1 Best Overall
- 128gb of storage
- Includes charging cord and box
- Excellent cosmetic condition
A redesigned camera bar
The images showed a pill-shaped camera module that no longer extended across the full width of the rear panel like earlier Pixel camera visors. The module appeared to contain three camera lenses, a flash, and another cutout that the report believed could be for a thermometer-related sensor. The photographs cannot establish the exact function of that extra opening or the cameras’ sensor specifications or image quality.
Why it appeared to be the smaller Pro
The handset was photographed beside a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max. Its apparent size, together with the triple-camera setup, led the report to identify it as likely being the smaller Pixel 9 Pro rather than the larger rumored Pro XL. The size comparison suggested a roughly 6.1-inch display, but a photograph cannot confirm an exact screen measurement or final product name.

Buttons, rails, and ports visible in the photos
The reported images showed flat or near-flat polished side rails with visible antenna lines. The power and volume controls appeared on the right side, while regulatory markings were visible on the left. A cutout on the top edge was described as an antenna opening.
Along the bottom, the handset appeared to have a USB-C port, speaker and microphone openings, and a SIM tray. The report cautioned that the microphone opening and SIM-eject location could be easy to confuse when inspecting the prototype.

What the leak did and did not establish
| Shown or reported | Still uncertain from the images |
|---|---|
| A physical Pixel-like handset with a redesigned pill-shaped camera module and three rear lenses | Whether every design detail matched the final retail phone |
| A boot-mode listing reportedly showing “caiman,” 16 GB RAM, and 128 GB storage | Whether the shown storage configuration was available in every market |
| A smaller apparent footprint beside an iPhone 14 Pro Max | The exact display size and final retail model name |
| An additional camera-module cutout | Whether the cutout was definitely for a thermometer sensor |
The photographs do not establish processor performance, camera quality, battery capacity, charging speed, durability, water resistance, pricing, or whether the unit was fully functional. Those conclusions require information beyond static prototype images.
Why the images mattered
The leak suggested that Google could pair a smaller Pro-sized phone with a triple-camera system, while changing the Pixel’s familiar full-width camera visor to a detached pill-shaped module. The reported 16 GB memory configuration also drew attention, though any link between that increase and more demanding on-device AI features was speculation at the time, not a confirmed explanation from Google.

For readers comparing phones, this is a historical pre-launch report rather than a buying recommendation. The images were attributed to Rozetked by 9to5Google’s April 19, 2024 report; they should not be treated as proof of every final retail specification.

Did the leaked Pixel 9 Pro show 16 GB of RAM?
Yes. The boot screen on the photographed unit reportedly listed 16 GB of RAM. The eventual Pixel 9 Pro also used 16 GB, but the leak itself was not an official Google specification announcement.
Did the leak prove the phone had 128 GB of storage?
It reportedly showed 128 GB on that unit. It did not prove that every retail Pixel 9 Pro had that storage capacity or that other configurations were unavailable.
Was the photographed phone definitely the smaller Pixel 9 Pro?
The report identified it as likely being the smaller Pro model based on its apparent size beside an iPhone 14 Pro Max and its triple-camera arrangement. The photos alone could not confirm the final name or exact display size.
