Start by keeping Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization enabled; both are normally on by default. Then schedule Battery Saver to turn on at a battery percentage that fits your routine. Use Extreme Battery Saver only when you can accept paused apps and delayed or missing notifications. Charging optimization is useful for battery health over time, but an 80% charge limit means less charge available that day.
1. Keep Adaptive Battery and app optimization on
Google recommends leaving both features enabled. Adaptive Battery learns which apps you use and limits less-used apps when they are not in use; this can reduce performance or delay notifications. After a new setup or factory reset, give it a few weeks to learn your usage.
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery Saver > Adaptive Battery.
- Turn on Use Adaptive Battery if it is off.
To check a specific app, go to Settings > Apps > See all apps > [app] > App battery usage. Leave background use set to Optimized unless the app has a specific need to run unrestricted. Unrestricted background activity can increase battery use. Google’s guidance is: “For best results keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimization on.”
2. Set Battery Saver to switch on automatically
Standard Battery Saver is a practical low-battery reserve: it activates at a threshold you choose rather than waiting for you to remember to switch it on.

- Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Saver > Schedule and reminders.
- Choose Turn on based on battery level.
- Set the percentage that suits your routine. There is no universally best threshold; choose one that leaves enough reserve for your usual day.
Battery Saver can also turn off when the phone reaches 90% if that option is enabled. Its effects can include reduced background activity, delayed low-priority notifications, location stopping while the screen is off, Dark Theme turning on, and Always show time and info turning off. Smooth Display is disabled on Pixel 4 and later; a 5G-capable Pixel may use 4G while Battery Saver is active. Which effects apply can depend on the phone’s software and network. See Google’s Battery Saver instructions for the current options.
3. Use Extreme Battery Saver only when its restrictions are acceptable
Extreme Battery Saver is for situations where extending the time between charges matters more than normal phone behavior. Most apps pause, processing slows, the work profile turns off, screen timeout drops to 30 seconds, and an active hotspot or tethering session stops. Essential system apps such as Phone, Messages, Clock, and Settings remain available.

Choose the apps you need to remain active before relying on the mode. Google notes that “Paused apps won’t send notifications.” That makes this mode a poor choice if you need alerts from apps that will be paused.
4. Reduce display and activity drain when needed
- Lower screen brightness and use Dark Theme if you prefer it. These are reasonable measures to try, not guaranteed amounts of extra runtime.
- Turn off hotspot or tethering when you are done using it.
- During a low-battery stretch, cut back on sustained high-drain activity such as GPS use, video streaming, graphics-heavy games, or camera use.
- Avoid prolonged heat. Google warns that heat can make the battery drain faster and may damage it.
5. Find the actual drain before restricting more apps
Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage and look for apps or system activity using an unusually large share of power. Inspect high-use apps’ background behavior before changing settings across the board. Google says somewhat higher drain for a few days after a software update can be normal while the phone downloads and optimizes software.

If a particular app has high background use, review its App battery usage setting rather than assuming every app needs unrestricted access or a stricter limit.
6. Choose charging optimization for battery health—not same-day runtime
Go to Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization, enable Charging optimization, then choose the option that fits how you charge.

| Option | What it does | Trade-off or timing |
|---|---|---|
| Adaptive Charging | Learns a recurring charging routine and may finish charging shortly before you usually unplug the phone. | Google says it takes about 14 days to learn and may not activate when your schedule varies, such as during travel. |
| Limit to 80% | Limits charging to prioritize long-term battery lifespan when a full charge is usually unnecessary. | Leaves less charge for that day. Google says a full charge is still needed every tenth cycle to keep capacity readings accurate. |
Battery Saver and display or background changes aim to reduce current-use drain. Charging optimization is about battery health over time; an 80% cap does not increase the time you can use the phone between charges on that cycle. See Google’s charging optimization guidance.

Google lists more than 30 hours of battery life and up to 120 hours with Extreme Battery Saver for Pixel 10a. It also lists a typical 5,100 mAh capacity, with a minimum of 5,000 mAh, and says a compatible 45W USB-C PPS charger or higher can charge the phone to 50% in about 30 minutes; the charger is sold separately. These are Google’s manufacturer figures, not a promise of an individual result.

Google’s battery-life methodology says Pixel 10a testing used pre-production hardware and software in California in late 2025 on a major US carrier network. The general battery estimate used a mixed profile of talk, data, standby, browsing, audio playback, and YouTube streaming, with specified settings exceptions. The Extreme Battery Saver estimate used a limited-feature profile and defaults available in that mode; Google’s methodology notes that the mode disables features including 5G connectivity. Actual duration varies with signal, settings, age, workload, and environment.
If a menu label differs on your Pixel, search Settings for Adaptive Battery, Battery Saver, or Charging optimization; Google’s menu paths can change with software updates.
