Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage, compare the app and system views, and identify what is actually consuming power. On Pixel 6 and later, run Battery diagnostics and choose Battery draining too quickly. A third-party app or a system category above 10% deserves targeted troubleshooting; persistent system drain should go to Pixel Support.
Keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled while you investigate. A new phone, a factory-reset phone, or a phone that was just updated can use more power temporarily while Android downloads, optimizes and relearns your usage. If the loss continues after that settling period, use the evidence in Battery usage rather than repeatedly changing display settings.

Start by finding the process that is draining the battery
A battery percentage by itself cannot tell you whether the problem is an app, the screen, the cellular modem, Wi-Fi, the CPU or Android itself. The Pixel 10 Pro gives you the evidence in Battery usage, so collect that evidence before turning off features at random.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, then Battery usage.
- Review View by apps to see which installed apps account for the charge used.
- Switch to View by systems to see categories such as Android OS, Screen, CPU, Wi-Fi and Mobile network.
- Note the percentage, the time period shown, and whether the item is mainly foreground or background use. A large foreground figure while you were actively using an app means something different from a large background figure while the phone was idle.
Take a screenshot or write down the leading entries before changing anything. Recheck the same screen after a normal day and after an overnight period. A repeatable pattern is more useful than a single reading immediately after charging, restarting or installing an update.

Use Google’s 10% review threshold
Google’s Pixel guidance treats a system component using more than 10% as a reason to discuss the phone with Pixel Support. The same threshold is a useful escalation point for an app: investigate that app’s background behavior, reset it when appropriate, and contact its developer if it remains the outlier. The threshold is not a promise that every item below 10% is harmless; it is a practical way to separate a leading suspect from normal shared consumption.

Run Pixel Battery diagnostics before making major changes
Pixel 6 and later include a built-in Battery diagnostics path. On a Pixel 10 Pro, open Settings > Battery, select Battery diagnostics, and choose the option for a battery that is draining too quickly. Follow the prompts and record the result alongside the Battery usage entries.
How to interpret the result
- If diagnostics points toward an app, treat that app as the first branch of the investigation rather than disabling unrelated phone features.
- If it points toward a system category, especially Android OS, Screen, CPU, Wi-Fi or Mobile network, keep the diagnostic result and usage screenshot for Pixel Support.
- If it does not identify a single cause, continue with the controlled checks below. A non-result does not prove that the battery is healthy or that Smooth Display is responsible.
Diagnostics is most useful when the phone has actually exhibited the problem. Run it after a representative day or after the overnight loss you are trying to explain, not immediately after a full charge with no usage history.
Fix an app that is using too much power
An app can consume charge while open, while syncing in the background, or both. The remedy depends on which pattern Battery usage shows.
Check the app’s battery controls
- In Settings > Battery > Battery usage > View by apps, tap the outlier.
- Read the foreground and background portions of its usage.
- Open the app’s battery settings and choose a less permissive background setting when the app does not need continuous syncing or instant notifications.
- Use the app normally for the next cycle and compare its share again.
Restricting background activity can delay notifications, uploads or synchronization. Do not apply the most restrictive setting to a messaging, security or work app without deciding which functions you are willing to lose.

Reset an app that remains abnormal
Google lists clearing an app’s cache or storage as a possible reset for third-party apps. Clear the cache first when available. Clearing storage signs the app out or removes its locally stored data in many apps, so confirm that important information is synced before using it. Reopen the app, sign in if required, and watch whether its background use returns to an ordinary level.
Escalate to the app developer
If one app remains above the other entries after its background use has been reviewed and it has been reset, use that app’s developer contact information. Include the Pixel model, Android version shown on the phone, the time period in Battery usage, and whether the drain occurs in the foreground, background or both. This gives the developer a reproducible symptom instead of a general report that the battery is bad.

Adaptive Battery is not a one-time switch that instantly fixes a drain problem. Google describes the Pixel battery as continuously learning from recent app usage and optimizing itself around those patterns. Battery optimization similarly limits unnecessary background work as the phone learns what you use and when.
Verify the adaptive controls
- Open Settings > Battery and confirm Adaptive Battery is on.
- In the battery settings for apps, leave battery optimization enabled unless a specific app genuinely requires unrestricted background operation.
- Use the phone normally rather than repeatedly resetting its settings while it is learning.
Optimization can take a few weeks to fully take effect on a new device or after a factory reset. That learning period is different from a persistent fault: continue to monitor the leading entries, but do not judge the phone from the first day alone.
What to do after a software update
Google says it is normal for a Pixel battery to drain a little more than usual after a software update. The phone may be downloading components, optimizing applications and settling the new software. A few days of extra use is therefore not, by itself, proof that the update damaged the battery.

Separate normal settling from an ongoing fault
- Write down when the update completed.
- For the next several days, check Battery usage at roughly the same time and note the leading app and system categories.
- Allow the phone to complete ordinary charging and use cycles instead of judging a single afternoon.
- If the same item remains unusually high after the settling period, run Battery diagnostics and follow the app or system branch.
Do not assume that turning off Smooth Display addresses an update-related process. If Android OS, CPU, Wi-Fi or Mobile network is the high entry, the evidence points away from a refresh-rate setting.

Reduce display demand without treating Smooth Display as the diagnosis
The Pixel 10 Pro’s Super Actua display supports a 1–120 Hz Smooth Display range. Turning Smooth Display off changes refresh behavior, but it does not identify an app, network process or CPU workload that may be draining the phone. Use display controls as one part of the investigation, not as the only fix.
Use Adaptive brightness
Open Settings > Display & touch and enable Adaptive brightness. Let the phone adjust brightness to the environment, then lower the level manually when a bright screen is unnecessary. Screen is one of the system categories shown in Battery usage, so compare its share before and after the change.
Try Dark theme on the OLED display
Enable Dark theme from the display settings or Quick Settings and observe the same usage period. Dark theme can reduce the light output required by an OLED display, but the amount saved depends on brightness, screen-on time and what is displayed. Do not promise yourself a fixed percentage improvement; the official guidance provides the control, not a universal savings figure.
Match the setting to the evidence
- If Screen is the dominant system entry and the phone is used at high brightness for long periods, brightness and Dark theme are reasonable experiments.
- If an app or Mobile network is dominant, display changes will not address the main process.
- If Smooth Display is already off and the drain continues, leave it off only if you prefer that behavior; continue with the usage and diagnostics evidence.
Investigate network and CPU entries separately
Battery usage can attribute a large share to Wi-Fi, Mobile network or CPU. These categories call for different questions than a bright screen or an individual app.

When Mobile network is high
Record whether the high reading coincides with places where cellular coverage changes or with periods when the phone was expected to maintain a mobile connection. Compare the reading with a period spent on a reliable Wi-Fi connection, then check Battery usage again. If Mobile network remains above 10% or the pattern is persistent, keep the result for Pixel Support rather than buying an accessory marketed as a battery cure.
When Wi-Fi is high
Check whether the drain occurs only on one network or at one location. Compare a normal day on a stable connection with the overnight check. A Wi-Fi category above Google’s 10% review threshold is a support case when it persists.
When CPU is high
A high CPU entry means the phone is doing substantial processing, but it does not identify which workload by itself. Look for an app that rises at the same time, note whether the phone is warm, and capture the timing in Battery usage. Persistent CPU use above 10% should be discussed with Pixel Support.

An overnight check helps distinguish screen-on use from standby drain. Repeat it rather than treating one night as a laboratory measurement.
- Charge the phone to a known level and record the time.
- Finish any expected setup, app installation or system update activity before the test.
- Leave the phone in its normal location with the settings you ordinarily use.
- In the morning, record the ending percentage, the elapsed time and the top entries in Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Repeat on another night if the result is surprising, then compare app and system views.
A repeatable overnight loss with little screen use points toward background or system activity and deserves diagnostics. A large loss only on a day with heavy screen time may have a different explanation. The check is for comparison, not a promise of a specific acceptable percentage.

Know what the Pixel 10 Pro battery specifications do—and do not—promise
Google’s 2025 product specification page lists the following expectations for the Pixel 10 Pro:

These figures set expectations for the hardware. They cannot establish that your particular battery is faulty, because real use varies and the Battery usage screen still has to identify the active consumer.
Use Extreme Battery Saver only as a temporary diagnostic or emergency measure
Extreme Battery Saver can extend the claimed battery life to up to 100 hours, but it changes normal phone behavior by limiting what runs. It is useful when you need to preserve charge or want to see how the phone behaves with aggressive restrictions. It should not replace finding an app or system process that is repeatedly draining the battery during ordinary use.

Google specifies the charging requirement and notes that the charger is sold separately. Faster charging restores energy; it does not fix an app, CPU, Wi-Fi or Mobile network process that keeps consuming power.
When to contact support
Escalate instead of endlessly changing settings when any of these conditions applies:
- Android OS, Screen, CPU, Wi-Fi or Mobile network repeatedly exceeds 10% in the system view.
- Battery diagnostics reports that the battery is draining too quickly and the pattern continues.
- A third-party app remains the clear outlier after background controls and an appropriate cache or storage reset.
- Unusual drain continues for several days after an update has had time to settle.
- Repeated overnight checks show substantial loss while the phone is largely idle.
For Pixel Support, provide Battery usage screenshots, the diagnostic result, the date of any recent update or factory reset, and the overnight observations. For a single third-party app, provide the same evidence to that app’s developer. This preserves the distinction between a phone-wide system problem and one application’s background behavior.
A complete troubleshooting order
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage and record both app and system views.
- On Pixel 6 and later, run Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly.
- Investigate an app that is unusually high; review background use, restrict it only when acceptable, and clear cache or storage when appropriate.
- Confirm Adaptive Battery and battery optimization remain enabled.
- Use Adaptive brightness, lower brightness when practical and try Dark theme if Screen is a major contributor.
- Compare foreground and background use, and compare Screen with CPU, Wi-Fi and Mobile network rather than assuming Smooth Display is at fault.
- If the phone was recently updated or reset, allow the learning and optimization period to pass while monitoring the same entries.
- Repeat an overnight check and escalate persistent system drain or an unresolved app outlier to the appropriate support channel.
This sequence gives every setting a job: Battery usage identifies the suspect, diagnostics checks the phone, adaptive controls reduce unnecessary background work, display changes address Screen when the evidence supports it, and support handles a repeatable system-level fault.
