Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is testing up to four autonomous, four-legged robots in its Airside Terminal through the xBridge innovation program. The pilot, powered by Pittsburgh-based Skild AI, starts with indoor air-quality monitoring and is intended to support—not replace—airport employees.
What Pittsburgh International Airport is testing
The xBridge pilot places quadruped robots in selected areas of PIT’s Airside Terminal, where they will operate within defined patrol areas and keep-out zones. Up to four robots and two charging stations are planned. Skild AI is responsible for installation, environmental mapping, supervision and monitoring, and will train airport personnel on the system.

The project is an evaluation in a complex, busy public environment. PIT and Skild AI are assessing how autonomous machines navigate terminal spaces, collect useful information and fit into existing operations workflows.
The first job: mobile air-quality monitoring
The initial phase equips the robots with environmental sensors that collect location-specific indoor-air readings. The system compares measurements with established thresholds and alerts airport personnel when readings fall outside those parameters.

Because the robots move through the terminal, monitoring can cover multiple locations instead of relying only on fixed sensors. The announcement does not publish accuracy rates, alert response times, operating costs or the number of incidents the system is expected to detect.
Planned follow-on uses
Later phases are aimed at helping custodial and terminal-operations teams identify conditions that may require attention. These applications remain proposed evaluations rather than confirmed routine services.

How the robots operate
Skild AI’s adaptive-autonomy software supplies the robots’ navigation and decision-making layer. The machines use cameras, advanced sensors and AI-based perception to move through assigned areas, recognize anomalies and send real-time information to operations staff.

Are the robots replacing airport employees?
There is no reported layoff plan, job-reduction target or published estimate of jobs eliminated. PIT describes the technology as working alongside airport staff and airline partners to improve efficiency, operations and customer service.
Deepak Nayyar, PIT’s executive vice president and chief technology officer, said the airport wants innovation to move “from the lab into the airport environment” and emphasized that the technology should work alongside employees. In practical terms, the pilot is designed to give operations teams additional observations and alerts; people remain responsible for interpreting those alerts and deciding what action to take.

Who makes the AI system?
Skild AI, founded in Pittsburgh in 2023, provides the adaptive-autonomy software and deployment support. Its founders, Deepak Pathak and Abhinav Gupta, are faculty members of Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute and School of Computer Science. Pathak is Carnegie Mellon’s Raj Reddy Associate Professor and Skild AI’s chief executive; Gupta is the company’s president.

Why PIT is an important test environment
Airports combine narrow passageways, changing crowds, luggage, cleaning activity, security procedures and time-sensitive operations. A robot that works in a controlled laboratory must handle far more variables in a terminal. PIT’s defined patrol areas and keep-out zones allow the airport and Skild AI to test autonomy while limiting where the machines can travel.
The announcement coincided with Pittsburgh hosting IROS 2026, an international robotics conference described as having participants from more than 70 countries. That setting reflects the region’s connection to robotics research, but conference attention does not establish that the airport system has achieved any particular performance benchmark.
What has not been disclosed
- The exact robot manufacturer and model are not identified.
- No public figures are given for navigation accuracy, alert response time, labor savings, operating cost or incidents prevented.
- The announcement does not state when the pilot will expand beyond the Airside Terminal or whether all proposed phases will proceed.
- Biological-threat detection and food or beverage delivery are possibilities under evaluation, not services passengers should expect to encounter routinely.
What travelers and airport workers should expect
During the pilot, travelers may see a quadruped robot moving through an assigned terminal area or stationed at a charging point. Its immediate purpose is to gather environmental data and relay operational alerts, not to interact with passengers as a concierge or security officer.
For airport teams, the meaningful test is whether mobile sensing can provide earlier, more precise information about air quality, waste, spills or congestion without disrupting normal work. Results from the pilot will determine whether the proposed uses are practical in a live airport setting.
