Pittsburgh Airport’s “Faster” TSA Machines Had a Slow Opening Day—Why Lines Grew So Long

Short answer: Pittsburgh International Airport’s new CT-based screening equipment appears to have contributed to slower passenger flow on its November 18, 2025 opening day, but available evidence does not prove that the scanners alone caused the delays. Travelers described bags waiting in the machines and estimated that security was “about four times slower,” yet those observations were anecdotal rather than a controlled comparison. The more defensible explanation is a checkpoint-system bottleneck involving equipment, image review, staffing, lane design, passenger volume and first-day operating procedures.

What happened on opening day?

The reports concern the new terminal’s main TSA checkpoint on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, a date identified in contemporaneous Pittsburgh passenger discussions. Posts described slow-moving queues and bags waiting for clearance even when the visible line ahead looked short. One traveler characterized the process as roughly four times slower than before; that wording was a personal estimate, not an audited measurement (Daily Passport).

Other opening-day posts said the scanners themselves appeared to be the bottleneck rather than officers, but they did not provide lane-by-lane timings or a verified count of missed flights (opening-day passenger discussion; another Pittsburgh discussion). The available material also does not establish whether every lane behaved the same way, whether standard screening was slower than PreCheck, or whether a particular machine was out of service.

What is established and what is not

Question What the available evidence shows
Were passengers delayed? Yes. Travelers reported unusually slow movement and machine-related waits on opening day.
Were the scanners “four times slower”? That is an attributed passenger estimate, not a controlled test.
Did every lane have the same problem? Not established.
Were machines defective? No official finding establishing a defect is available.
Did the issue persist long term? Opening-day accounts alone cannot answer that; later discussions remained anecdotal.

What the new TSA machines actually are

The equipment is computed-tomography (CT) checkpoint screening, not merely a faster version of a conventional two-dimensional belt scanner. CT creates a three-dimensional image that officers can rotate and inspect from different angles. TSA says the technology is intended to improve detection and checkpoint efficiency, while allowing more detailed examination of bag contents (TSA checkpoint technology factsheet).

  • MANY USES WITH LOTS OF VARIETY. Forge travel locks can be used on a wide variety of items besides suitcases or luggage. These locks can be used on a briefcase, gym locker, purse, backpack or laptop bag.

Associated lanes may also reduce some preparation steps. Depending on the lane and current instructions, passengers may be allowed to leave laptops, liquids or other items in a bag. That is not a universal promise: TSA signage and officer directions control, and a bag can still be opened for additional inspection. AP describes CT systems as providing both two-dimensional and three-dimensional views that can reveal objects obscured in ordinary imaging (Associated Press).

Why a “faster” machine can produce a slower line

“Faster” can refer to passenger preparation or intended security performance, while a traveler experiences the entire queue. The checkpoint has several serial stages:

  1. Joining the queue and presenting identification.
  2. Removing or leaving items as that lane requires.
  3. Loading a tray or bag onto the conveyor.
  4. Acquiring and processing the CT image.
  5. Officer review and any automated or manual alarm resolution.
  6. Secondary inspection, when required.
  7. Retrieving belongings and leaving the checkpoint.

If any one stage handles fewer passengers per hour than the others, it sets the pace for the whole system. A CT image may take longer to acquire or review than a conventional image. A flagged bag can stop the conveyor, while unfamiliar tray spacing or loading can interrupt automated lanes. On an opening day, staff may still be learning the equipment, passenger instructions may be unclear, and fewer lanes may be fully operational. A downstream divestiture table or bag-retrieval area can also create a queue even when the scanner itself is functioning normally.

That is why a shorter line is not necessarily a faster line. A queue that advances steadily may clear sooner than a short queue that repeatedly stops for image review or bag release.

Was Pittsburgh’s problem the scanners or the operating environment?

The evidence supports a mixed, cautious conclusion:

  • Directly supported: passengers reported slow CT processing and visible machine-related bottlenecks.
  • Also relevant: Pittsburgh had recently experienced severe checkpoint congestion during high-demand periods.
  • Not established: that every scanner ran below specification, that staffing was inadequate, or that opening-day performance represented normal long-term operation.

The “four times slower” phrase also lacks a defined comparison. It is unclear whether the traveler compared one bag with an earlier Pittsburgh machine, included officer waits, or was in standard screening or PreCheck. It should therefore be quoted as an observation, not presented as a measured ratio.

Why Pittsburgh travelers were especially sensitive to another slowdown

The airport entered the new-terminal period with a recent history of long security queues. In June 2024, officials warned passengers with flights between 5 and 8 a.m. to arrive 2½ to 3 hours early (CBS Pittsburgh). Reporting at the time said the airport was screening nearly 10 million passengers annually in a facility designed for about 5 million screenings (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette).

During that earlier summer surge, PreCheck passengers were moved to an alternate checkpoint from 4 to 7 a.m. (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette). Other 2024 coverage documented travelers missing flights because of the queues (WPXI). Those events do not prove the 2025 opening-day cause, but they show how quickly a demand surge or reduced lane capacity can overwhelm Pittsburgh’s checkpoint system.

What PreCheck and CLEAR can—and cannot—change

TSA PreCheck

PreCheck can reduce divestiture time and provide a dedicated lane when that lane is open. It does not guarantee a short queue or faster CT image processing. If PreCheck passengers use the same scanner that is releasing bags slowly, the membership may simplify preparation without changing the machine bottleneck. Details and enrollment are at TSA PreCheck.

Global Entry

Global Entry is aimed at travelers who also want expedited U.S. reentry after international trips; approved members receive TSA PreCheck eligibility. It is a stronger fit for frequent international travelers than for occasional domestic-only flyers. Apply through U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

CLEAR+

CLEAR can accelerate identity verification at participating airports, but it does not replace TSA screening or bypass CT scanning, bag alarms, staffing constraints or secondary inspection. It is useful only when identity verification is a meaningful part of the delay. See the vendor’s current terms at CLEAR.

How to plan for Pittsburgh departures

  • Check Pittsburgh International Airport’s current checkpoint guidance before leaving home, especially for early-morning, holiday and other peak departures.
  • Allow extra time while a new lane configuration or operating procedure is still settling in; do not treat an advertised CT capability as a guaranteed processing speed.
  • Pack prohibited or questionable items out of your carry-on and keep electronics, medication and liquids organized so they can be removed quickly if instructed.
  • Follow the lane’s signs and TSA officers even if you have previously been told that CT lanes allow items to remain in bags.
  • If the queue is not moving and boarding time is approaching, ask a checkpoint supervisor or airline representative for the current routing options; a short-looking line can still contain a downstream machine stoppage.
  • Remember that parking, shuttles, terminal transfers, airline document checks and international procedures add time beyond TSA screening.

What would prove whether the machines improved

A fair assessment needs more than a traveler’s stopwatch or the apparent length of a queue. The useful measures are passengers processed per lane per hour; median and 95th-percentile wait times; the number of operating lanes; machine downtime; bag-recheck and secondary-inspection rates; staffing; passenger preparation time; and missed flights attributable to security delays. Those figures should be compared across opening day, the first weeks, ordinary weekdays and peak periods.

Without that data, the most accurate reading is that CT equipment was probably one real opening-day constraint inside a larger throughput failure. The technology may still deliver better threat detection and less bag unpacking after staff, software, conveyors and passenger routines are tuned. Opening-day anecdotes show that the promised benefit was not yet translating into a reliably faster end-to-end checkpoint.
