Yes—but only in a tightly defined laboratory sense. A University of Minnesota team reports that human-scale pig kidneys were preserved in an ice-free, glass-like state at −150 °C for up to one year, rapidly rewarmed with electromagnetic nanowarming, and recovered measurable function. The October 14, 2026 report is a bioRxiv preprint, not yet peer reviewed, and it did not show a pig surviving long term with a year-stored kidney or establish a human transplant.

What the experiment actually showed

The team worked with porcine kidneys roughly comparable in size to organs relevant to human transplantation. The kidneys were perfused with a newly developed cryoprotectant formulation, cooled under controlled conditions and held at −150 °C for as long as one year. The authors describe these organs as “100-fold larger than previously nanowarmed kidneys,” a major scale increase over earlier demonstrations.

After storage, the organs were rewarmed using staged electromagnetic nanowarming. During subsequent normothermic perfusion—circulation with warm, oxygenated fluid outside the body—the kidneys showed vascular, metabolic and excretory activity. They reperfused homogeneously and produced urine immediately after transplantation. Across the reported measurements, recovery approached static cold-storage results and was similar to kidneys exposed to cryoprotectant without the full vitrification, storage and nanowarming sequence.

Those findings indicate that the tissue and its blood-vessel network remained sufficiently intact to resume several kidney functions. They do not demonstrate durable whole-animal survival. The abstract reports no long-term follow-up of pigs supported solely by a kidney stored for a year.

Why “frozen” is shorthand

Vitrification replaces ice with a glass-like state

Ordinary freezing allows ice crystals to form. In a large organ, crystals can rupture cell membranes and damage the delicate capillary network. Vitrification uses concentrated cryoprotectants and carefully controlled cooling to turn the water-rich tissue into an ice-free, glass-like solid instead. The objective is not simply to make the kidney colder; it is to prevent destructive crystal growth throughout the organ.

Cooling and reheating must be controlled together

The investigators used controlled cooling with annealing, a step that helps manage thermal and concentration stresses as the kidney moves toward the vitrified state. Rewarming is equally important. A slowly warmed organ can devitrify and form ice, while uneven heating can create temperature gradients, cracking or other mechanical damage.

Nanowarming heats the organ volumetrically

In earlier work, iron-oxide nanoparticles distributed through the organ absorbed energy from radiofrequency electromagnetic fields. That approach can warm tissue throughout its volume rather than relying only on heat entering from the outside. The new protocol used staged volumetric nanowarming to make reheating more uniform and limit thermal stress in the much larger porcine kidneys.

How this result compares with earlier preservation

Approach Storage duration reported Organ scale Ice-control strategy Functional result Follow-up and status
2026 University of Minnesota porcine preprint Up to one year at −150 °C Human-scale pig kidneys; described as 100-fold larger than previously nanowarmed kidneys New cryoprotectant formulation, controlled cooling with annealing, then staged electromagnetic nanowarming Vascular, metabolic and excretory function during normothermic perfusion; homogeneous reperfusion; urine produced immediately after transplantation No reported long-term survival using a year-stored kidney; bioRxiv preprint awaiting peer review
2023 vitrification study in rats Up to 100 days Rat kidneys Vitrification followed by nanowarming Transplantation restored life-sustaining renal function in nephrectomized rats Peer-reviewed Nature Communications study; smaller-animal model
Static cold storage Short preservation windows measured in hours rather than months or years Routine donor-organ sizes Non-cryogenic cooling; it does not place the organ into a vitrified state Established clinical preservation method, but the preprint does not provide a new numerical comparison of clinical outcomes Current transplant practice; allocation remains constrained by time

What “brought back to life” means here

The phrase describes reversible preservation and recovery of organ activity, not proof that a dead kidney became alive again. The kidneys were living organs before preservation, were placed into a cryoprotectant-supported vitrified state, and then returned to warm perfusion. Researchers measured blood-flow behavior, metabolism, excretion and urine production—important indicators of viability.

Immediate urine production after transplantation is encouraging, but it is an early endpoint. A transplant kidney must maintain filtration, regulate fluid and electrolytes, avoid thrombosis and inflammation, and function for weeks, months and years. None of those long-term outcomes is established by the reported experiment.

Why year-long storage could change transplantation

Conventional donor kidneys have a short preservation window, generally measured in hours. That clock can force transplant teams to accept an imperfect match, transport an organ over a limited distance or discard an organ when a recipient cannot be prepared in time. A reliable months- or years-long bank would separate donation from the moment of implantation.

In principle, cryogenic banking could allow organs to be accumulated, transported farther, matched more deliberately and scheduled around recipient readiness. It might also make it easier to build inventories for emergencies or to study organs without the immediate pressure of a surgical timetable. Those are potential logistical benefits, not outcomes demonstrated in this preprint.

What still blocks human transplantation

Peer review and independent replication

The report was posted on bioRxiv on October 14, 2026 and has not been certified by peer review. Other laboratories will need to reproduce the preservation and rewarming results, including in kidneys from different animals and with larger sample numbers.

Long-term function matters more than immediate recovery

Future studies must show sustained kidney function after transplantation, not only urine production immediately after the operation. They also need to track vascular injury, immune and inflammatory responses, fibrosis, clotting and any delayed loss of filtration.

Cryoprotectant and nanoparticle safety must be demonstrated

The chemicals used to prevent ice formation can be toxic at high concentrations. Nanowarming also introduces iron-oxide particles and a requirement to distribute them evenly, then remove or safely retain them. Human use would require validated clearance procedures and evidence that residual cryoprotectant or nanoparticles do not create unacceptable toxicity.

Scale, equipment and regulation are substantial

Vitrification requires specialized perfusion systems, cryogenic storage and tightly controlled thermal protocols. Rewarming hardware must deliver energy uniformly through a whole organ without cracking it. Hospitals would need validated processes, trained staff and regulatory approval for the combined use of cryoprotectants, nanoparticles, perfusion and electromagnetic equipment.

How this differs from ordinary freezing

  • Ice formation: ordinary freezing permits ice crystals; vitrification is designed to avoid them.
  • Temperature: the reported kidneys were held at −150 °C, far below routine cold-storage temperatures.
  • Rewarming: conventional organs are warmed relatively simply for implantation; vitrified organs require rapid, spatially uniform nanowarming to prevent devitrification and cracking.
  • Evidence: the current result is functional recovery in a pig-organ model, not an approved clinical preservation method.

What to watch next

The decisive next milestones are a peer-reviewed publication, independent replication, larger studies with prolonged post-transplant monitoring and safety data showing that the preservation agents can be removed or tolerated. Only after those steps—and formal regulatory assessment—could clinical trials be considered.

The authors disclose that aspects of the technology have been filed in patents owned by the University of Minnesota. That disclosure indicates a possible institutional licensing or collaboration path, but it does not mean a commercial service or hospital-ready product is available.
