If you chose a class that is too advanced in Duelist: Idle Expedition, you are not permanently locked into it. The official v1.0.6 update removed the restriction on downgrading, allowing a character to switch to an available lower-tier class. Open the character’s class-change control, select a lower-tier option that the game currently marks as unlocked, and read the confirmation panel before accepting. The announcement confirms the downgrade rule, but it does not document the exact menu path, price, cooldown, or treatment of levels and equipment, so those details must be verified in your current game client.
What v1.0.6 changed
The key change appears in the development team’s official v1.0.6 announcement: “Removed the restriction on downgrading classes. You can now switch to lower-tier classes.” (Official v1.0.6 announcement)

That wording establishes a specific correction path. A character that is currently in a higher-tier class may move to a lower tier when the target is selectable. It does not establish that every class is interchangeable, that every branch can be crossed, or that switching is free and unlimited. Treat “downgrade” literally: the verified change concerns moving down the class hierarchy.

Because the announcement does not name a button, screen, currency, timer, or retention rule, avoid following an old guide that presents those details as universal. Interface labels and class availability can change with later patches or with the character’s current unlock state.

How the class system affects a wrong pick
The Steam store listing describes the game as an idle auto-battler with seven main classes, 21 subclasses, and 91 unique roles (Steam store listing). Those numbers explain why a class mistake can feel consequential: the choice sits inside a layered role system rather than a single one-time character archetype.
Main classes, subclasses and roles are different levels
- Main class: one of the seven top-level categories listed by Steam.
- Subclass: a more specific specialization; the listing identifies 21 in total.
- Role: the most granular category in the listing, with 91 unique roles.
The store description gives the size of the system, not a rule that lets you jump between any two entries. Use the tier and availability indicators shown in your own class interface to determine whether the target is a legitimate downgrade.
Step-by-step: switch to a lower-tier class
The following procedure uses only actions supported by the official change: finding the in-game class control, choosing an unlocked lower tier, and checking the confirmation details. It deliberately avoids inventing a menu name that the patch notes never specify.

- Make sure the game is running with the relevant update. The downgrade rule is documented for v1.0.6. If the client is waiting for a Steam update, finish that update and restart the game before judging whether the option exists.
- Open the character or class-management screen. Navigate through the character interface until you see the controls used to inspect or change the current class. The official announcement does not publish an exact path, so rely on the labels visible in your installed build rather than a screenshot from an older version.
- Identify the current tier. Confirm which class, subclass or role is active and note the tier relationship shown by the game. A target should be lower-tier relative to the current selection; a different name alone does not prove that it qualifies as a downgrade.
- Inspect the available lower-tier choices. Select the class you intended to use, or another lower-tier option that the interface marks as available. If it is locked, the downgrade permission does not override that lock.
- Read the confirmation panel completely. Before committing, look for any displayed cost, cooldown, warning about progression, or notice about equipment and abilities. Those effects are not stated in the v1.0.6 announcement, so the confirmation panel is the authoritative information for this particular switch.
- Confirm only after checking the consequences. Accept the change if the displayed terms are acceptable. If the game asks for a resource or presents a timer, record that information for future changes; do not assume another downgrade will have identical terms unless the interface says so.
- Verify the result. Return to the character summary and check that the lower-tier class is now shown. Inspect the role, skills or equipment panels that the game exposes so you can see whether anything changed as part of the accepted operation.
If the target does not appear
An absent option is not proof that downgrading was removed. First check whether the target is actually lower-tier, whether it is unlocked for this character, and whether the client finished installing the update. If the class is still missing after those checks, use the current in-game requirements and any current announcement rather than relying on a pre-v1.0.6 guide.
What the official announcement confirms—and what it leaves open
Keeping these boundaries clear prevents an avoidable second mistake. The following points separate verified behavior from details that the available announcement does not establish.
| Question | What is established | What you must check in-game |
|---|---|---|
| Can a higher-tier class be changed to a lower tier? | Yes. v1.0.6 says the downgrade restriction was removed. | Which lower-tier classes are currently selectable for your character. |
| Can you move between any two classes or branches? | Not stated. The note only says “lower-tier classes.” | Whether the desired target is in the same branch and accepted by the interface. |
| What does the change cost? | Not stated in the announcement. | Any currency, item, energy or other requirement shown on the confirmation screen. |
| Is there a cooldown or limit? | Not stated. | Any timer, daily limit or warning presented when you select the change. |
| Are levels, experience or role progress retained? | Not stated. | The confirmation text and the character panels after the switch. |
| Are equipment and abilities preserved? | Not stated. | Any warning before confirmation and the loadout shown afterward. |
| Are old unlock requirements still accurate? | No guarantee. v1.0.3 notes said class unlock requirements were reduced. | The requirement text in the current class interface. |
When the class you want is unavailable
Check the tier relationship
The patch change applies to moving to a lower tier. If the interface treats the desired class as a peer or a higher tier, it may not qualify even though it feels like a better fit. Look for the hierarchy or tier marker supplied by the game rather than inferring it from the class name.

Recheck current unlock requirements
Official v1.0.3 notes reported that class unlock requirements were reduced (Official Steam Community announcements). Requirements have therefore changed over the life of the game. A guide written before that adjustment may tell you that a class is locked when the current client allows it, or may omit a requirement that now appears in a different form. The running game’s class screen is the safest eligibility reference.
Update and restart before troubleshooting further
Steam can leave a game waiting for an update or a restart after a patch has downloaded. Complete the pending update, relaunch the game, and open the class screen again. If the downgrade control remains absent, capture the exact class and requirement text so you can compare it with the wording in a current official announcement or request support without guessing at the cause.
Should you keep the advanced class or downgrade?
The update gives you a correction option, not a universal recommendation. Decide from the information the game presents for your character.

| Situation | Reasonable action | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|
| The selected class is usable and the confirmation screen shows no unacceptable consequence. | Keep it and continue playing. | That its skills, role and equipment match the way you intend to use the character. |
| The class is too advanced for the role you wanted, and the intended lower tier is selectable. | Consider the downgrade now rather than building further in the wrong direction. | Any cost, cooldown and progression warning displayed before confirmation. |
| The desired class is locked. | Do not force the change; meet the requirement shown by the current client or continue with the present class. | The exact requirement and whether it applies to this character, subclass or role. |
| The interface offers a different branch but does not label it as lower tier. | Pause and verify before accepting. | Whether the game explicitly allows that branch transition; v1.0.6 does not document unrestricted branch switching. |
Do not treat a lower-tier label as a prediction about combat performance. The available sources establish the class-change permission and the size of the role system, but they do not provide a balance ranking or a claim that one tier is stronger in every situation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting a missing or failed downgrade
The control is not visible
- Confirm that the game has updated to the build containing the v1.0.6 change.
- Open the character’s class-management view rather than a general equipment or inventory screen.
- Check whether the current character actually has a lower-tier target available.
- Read any lock or requirement text instead of assuming the control is disabled globally.
The target is visible but cannot be selected
Compare the target’s tier with the active class and inspect the requirement shown beside it. The downgrade announcement does not waive unlock conditions, and the earlier reduction in requirements means that only the current display can tell you whether an older condition still applies.
The game shows a warning you did not expect
Stop at the confirmation screen. Since the official note does not specify costs, cooldowns, retained progress or equipment behavior, a warning in your client is more specific than any general description of the patch. Cancel, record the wording, and decide only after you understand what the game says will happen.

The class changes but the character looks different afterward
Inspect the class, role and loadout panels before making another change. The published announcement does not say which elements are preserved, so compare the displayed state rather than assuming that a second switch will restore anything automatically.
Why older guides can mislead you
Class rules have changed in more than one update. Version 1.0.3 reduced class unlock requirements, while version 1.0.6 removed the restriction on moving to lower tiers. A guide that predates either change can be wrong in opposite directions: it may claim that a class is harder to unlock, or that downgrading is impossible. Check the version number and date on any advice you read, then confirm the option in the live class interface.
The Steam listing’s counts—seven main classes, 21 subclasses and 91 unique roles—also describe the game at the listing level, not a promise that every role is available immediately or that every character can access every branch. Availability is a character- and version-specific question.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA safe checklist before you commit
- Identify the active class and the target’s tier.
- Confirm the target is marked available in the current client.
- Read every line of the confirmation panel.
- Note any resource cost, timer or warning before accepting.
- After switching, verify the class, role, progression and loadout displays.
- Keep the game updated before attempting another change.
The practical answer is therefore straightforward but deliberately limited: v1.0.6 gives you a way out of an overly advanced class by permitting a switch to a lower-tier class. The exact price, timing, progression effects and branch rules remain client-specific until the game states them on its own class-change screen.
