What PHYSINT actually is
Kojima Productions identifies PHYSINT as its third original IP and frames it as an action-espionage game intended to set a benchmark for the genre. The studio announced the project on September 17, 2026, naming Bill Skarsgård in the lead role and Xbox as its publishing partner.
Those are the usable facts. The announcement does not provide a release date, launch window, gameplay footage, confirmed mechanics, or a platform list. It also does not identify PHYSINT as a Metal Gear title. Calling it “Metal Gear Solid’s successor” therefore describes its place in Kojima’s espionage-oriented body of work, not an official story continuation, remake, or licensed sequel.

Why the distinction matters
Metal Gear Solid is a long-running series with established characters, terminology, fictional history, and gameplay conventions. An original IP can borrow an author’s interests without inheriting that continuity. Until Kojima Productions publishes more material, there is no factual basis for saying PHYSINT includes Solid Snake, Metal Gear technology, the series’ chronology, or any particular stealth system.
The absence of a release date also means PHYSINT cannot be preordered on the evidence currently available. Any retailer page, platform claim, price, or launch prediction should be checked against a later official announcement rather than treated as confirmed information.

PlayStation’s series retrospective presents Metal Gear Solid as tactical stealth combined with cinematic storytelling and complex political themes. That combination is the franchise’s defining fantasy: the player is not merely avoiding guards, but operating inside an espionage narrative that gives missions broader geopolitical stakes.
“Tactical” does not mean there is one prescribed route through every encounter. It signals a focus on planning, concealment, enemy awareness, and choosing when to infiltrate, evade, distract, or fight. The cinematic side gives those decisions context through characters, cutscenes, and recurring themes. Someone choosing Metal Gear Solid is usually looking for a story-led stealth adventure in which the operation and the surrounding political drama are equally important.
The series also has unusual historical weight. Konami’s 2024 corporate report records more than 60 million Metal Gear copies sold. That is a historical total from that report, not a claim about the franchise’s current lifetime sales, but it explains why a new Kojima espionage project invites comparison even when it is not part of the same continuity.
Splinter Cell: infiltration where light and shadow are central
Ubisoft’s 2021 announcement says Ubisoft Toronto is rebuilding the Splinter Cell remake from the ground up in Snowdrop. The announcement specifically highlights dynamic lighting and shadows, features closely associated with the series’ stealth identity.

That emphasis creates a different stealth fantasy from Metal Gear Solid’s broader cinematic mix. In Splinter Cell, the player’s relationship with visibility is the central question: how exposed is the operative, what areas are illuminated, and how can darkness or environmental cover support a covert approach? Lighting is not merely visual atmosphere; it is part of how the series communicates risk.
The remake announcement does not give a release date. It confirms the production approach and the importance of lighting and shadows, but it does not establish final features, mission structure, or supported platforms for the finished remake. Those details should not be inferred from older games or from the Snowdrop announcement.
HITMAN: assassination assignments built for experimentation and replay
IO Interactive announced in January 2023 that HITMAN 3 would become HITMAN World of Assassination, with access to HITMAN 1 and HITMAN 2. The official game materials describe freedom of approach, multiple locations, and repeatable sandbox play.
HITMAN’s core question is less “Can I remain unseen from start to finish?” and more “How can I reach this target, manipulate the situation, and escape using the opportunities in this location?” Disguises, environmental possibilities, social spaces, and timing let players construct different solutions. A successful mission is often the beginning of experimentation: replaying the same assignment to try a different disguise, route, accident, or target schedule.
Because World of Assassination is an evolving package, exact contents can vary by storefront and edition. Check the current listing for the region and platform you intend to use rather than assuming every edition contains identical access.

Is PHYSINT the next Metal Gear Solid?
Not in the formal sense. PHYSINT is an original Kojima Productions IP, while Metal Gear Solid is a KONAMI-owned series with its own established continuity. The announcement does not call PHYSINT a sequel, spin-off, remake, or continuation.
The comparison is still understandable because both projects sit in the action-espionage space associated with Kojima. If PHYSINT eventually combines stealth, cinematic storytelling, and political themes, players may recognize a creative relationship. That would be an influence or evolution, not proof of narrative succession. Conversely, it could emphasize a different structure entirely. Without footage or a feature announcement, assigning it a specific camera system, alert model, mission format, or enemy behavior would be speculation.

Choose Metal Gear Solid if the story is the main attraction
Start with Metal Gear Solid when you want a directed espionage campaign in which tactical stealth supports a cinematic plot and larger political themes. It is the clearest fit for readers who use “the next Metal Gear” to mean another story-heavy stealth experience rather than a pure sandbox.

Splinter Cell is the better match when your interest is covert infiltration organized around light, shadow, and exposure. The announced remake is still without a release date, so this recommendation concerns the series’ established identity, not a promise about the remake’s final content.
Choose HITMAN if you want a mission to solve repeatedly
Pick HITMAN when experimentation matters more than a single authored route. Its assignments are designed to be revisited, with disguises, environmental opportunities, and multiple approaches producing different outcomes. World of Assassination is the relevant current package, but verify the exact edition contents on your storefront.
Follow PHYSINT if you want Kojima’s next espionage concept
PHYSINT is the choice for curiosity about a new Kojima Productions project, not for immediate access to a playable Metal Gear replacement. The September 17, 2026 announcement confirms the project’s genre framing and lead actor, while leaving its launch timing, platforms, and mechanics open.

What to play while waiting for PHYSINT
METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER
KONAMI describes METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER as a remake of the 2004 game, with the original story and game design recreated and updated. The announcement names PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.

Splinter Cell and HITMAN

HITMAN World of Assassination offers the established sandbox approach and access to the first three modern HITMAN campaigns through the package announced by IO Interactive. Neither product should be presented as a substitute for confirmed PHYSINT gameplay; they are alternatives for different player preferences.
