A mathematical model from George Washington University proposes an early-warning signal for the moment a chatbot’s output may tip from desirable to harmful. The idea is not a consumer safety certification or proof that commercial assistants can already be monitored reliably. It is a formula designed to estimate when competing signals in a conversation could push a model into an undesirable output regime before the harmful answer appears.
What the physicists are claiming
Neil F. Johnson and Frank Yingjie Huo describe their work in the peer-reviewed Patterns paper “Competition for attention predicts good-to-bad tipping in AI,” published online on 8 October 2026 (DOI 10.1016/j.patter.2026.101666). They treat a conversation as a contest between directions the model should follow and directions that could produce an undesirable response.

The proposed calculation tracks those competing directions inside a transformer’s attention and residual stream. It estimates a tipping condition: a point at which the undesirable direction becomes strong enough to dominate the desirable one. If that condition can be evaluated while a model is processing a prompt, it could provide an alert before the model emits its final answer.
Some coverage describes the residual vector as an internal “compass needle.” That is an explanatory metaphor, not a literal component or a physical gauge installed in a chatbot.

Why order in the conversation matters
The model predicts that the same questions can produce different outcomes when their order changes. Earlier exchanges alter the context competing for attention, so a later request may be processed while the model’s internal state is closer to, or farther from, the tipping condition. The concern is therefore not limited to obviously malicious prompts; an apparently acceptable sequence can move a conversation toward a bad regime.

George Washington University says the evidence spans those seven open-weight models. Tests changed the order of identical questions and observed whether answers stayed acceptable or became undesirable. The paper’s highlights report that predicted immediate-versus-delayed tipping matched the behavior of the tested models well.
The evidence establishes a pattern in the evaluated models, not a universal threshold that applies to every AI system. The sources do not identify a single parameter cutoff, model-independent score or accuracy figure that operators can copy into a production safety system.

“Dangerous” does not mean only factually false
The proposed warning is about harm in context. An answer can contain factually correct information and still be dangerous if its framing or direction nudges a vulnerable person toward self-harm, or if it misleads a professional who is relying on the system.
“We have found the crack that makes an AI’s output flip from what you want to what you don’t, output that can be factually correct yet dangerous, whether that’s a nudge toward self-harm or misleading advice to a doctor, a soldier, or a lawyer,” Johnson said in the Cell Press release.
That definition is broader than checking whether individual sentences are true. It concerns the model’s overall direction and the consequences of an answer in a particular conversation.

How the proposal compares with ordinary safeguards
Detection timing
The proposed indicator is intended to operate before an unsafe answer is produced, by watching the model’s internal state. Prompt screens and output filters used in deployed systems can inspect an input or the generated text; their exact timing differs by implementation. The paper does not show that its indicator outperforms those safeguards.

Access to model internals
Because the calculation uses attention and residual-stream information, an implementation would need access to those activations. The authors tested open-weight models, where internal signals can be inspected. The study does not demonstrate operation through a black-box commercial API that exposes only prompts and completed answers.
Coverage and portability
The reported coverage is seven open-weight models ranging from 124 million to 12 billion parameters. That is meaningful evidence across model sizes, but it does not establish that one formula or threshold transfers unchanged to today’s commercial assistants, different architectures or systems with additional safety layers.

Conversation-order sensitivity
Order sensitivity is central to the proposal: rearranging the same questions changed whether responses remained acceptable. A safeguard that evaluates only isolated prompts or completed answers may miss this trajectory unless it also accounts for the full conversation history.
False positives and false negatives
No production false-positive or false-negative rates are reported in the available accounts. Any operational warning would have to balance unnecessary interruptions against missed dangerous transitions, and the appropriate threshold could vary by application.
Validation on deployed assistants
The work has not established production accuracy, deployment readiness or reliable performance on current commercial assistants. George Washington University presents the findings as evidence from open-weight models and explicitly distinguishes what that evidence can and cannot say about commercial systems.

- Internal instrumentation: capture the relevant attention or residual-stream signals without materially changing the model’s behavior.
- Calibration: test thresholds across many prompts, languages, conversation lengths and risk categories rather than treating one tipping value as universal.
- Independent evaluation: measure missed hazards and benign conversations wrongly blocked, including adversarially chosen prompt orders.
- Operational response: define what happens after an alert—pause generation, request clarification, route to a safer model or require human review.
- External validation: reproduce the result on production assistants and document performance under their proprietary alignment and filtering layers.
Until those steps are demonstrated, the formula is best understood as a scientific early-warning hypothesis and an analysis tool, not a guarantee that an AI system is safe.
Why the finding matters
Large language models do not respond solely to the latest sentence. Their behavior reflects the accumulated context competing for attention. A measurable approach to that competition could give developers another place to look for failure—before an unsafe response reaches a user—while also clarifying why harmless-looking changes in prompt order sometimes have outsized effects.
The immediate takeaway is limited but important: AI behavior may cross from helpful to harmful through a detectable internal transition, yet the evidence so far comes from seven open-weight models and does not prove dependable monitoring of commercial assistants.
