The decision starts with your PS5 model
The console, not the game packaging, determines whether you can use a disc. Sony describes the standard PS5 console with a disc drive as compatible with PS5 and supported PS4 games on Blu-ray disc, while also allowing digital purchases and downloads. The PS5 Digital Edition is an all-digital console with no built-in disc drive.

A disc-drive PS5 can therefore be used as a digital console whenever you want. Buying the disc-drive model does not force you to buy boxed games. The reverse is not true: a Digital Edition cannot use a PS4 or PS5 disc unless Sony’s compatible accessory is installed.
What buying a physical PS5 game actually involves
Disc access is tied to the console
A physical purchase gives you a Blu-ray disc that the console can read. On a compatible PS5, you insert the disc to use the disc edition of a supported game. The disc-drive console also accepts supported PS4 game discs, which makes it useful if you are carrying a library forward from the previous generation.

Physical availability is title-specific. A box may contain a PS5 edition, a PS4 edition that offers a PS5 upgrade, or a game that runs through backward compatibility. Check the case and the publisher’s upgrade terms rather than assuming every PS4 disc receives the same treatment.
PS4 disc upgrades have conditions
Sony says certain PS4 games can be upgraded to a digital PS5 version. The offer may be free or paid, may be limited to a particular period, and may not exist for every title. A disc-based upgrade requires a PS5 with a disc drive. The PS4 disc must be from the same country or region as the PlayStation account, and the disc must remain inserted whenever you play the upgraded digital PS5 version.
That last condition matters if you hoped to sell or lend the disc after upgrading. The upgrade is not a way to turn a disc into a completely independent digital entitlement; the inserted disc remains the license check for play.
Physical format advantages
- Access to discs you already own: A disc-drive PS5 can play supported PS4 games and PS5 games on Blu-ray.
- Choice at purchase: You can compare a boxed edition with the same title’s PlayStation Store price and current promotions.

Physical format limitations
- A disc-drive console is required: The PS5 Digital Edition cannot read discs without a compatible add-on drive.
- Disc upgrades are conditional: Eligibility, upgrade price, time limits and regional rules vary by game.
- The disc remains relevant after an upgrade: You must keep the qualifying PS4 disc inserted to play the upgraded digital version.

What buying a digital PS5 game involves
Account and internet requirements
Sony’s PS5 quick-start guidance says you need an internet connection and a PlayStation account to purchase and download games. The account is the route through which the digital purchase is associated with your library. You should therefore set up the correct account before buying, especially if more than one family member uses the console.
The requirement to connect for purchase and download does not establish that every previously downloaded digital game always needs an internet connection each time it launches. Whether a particular title, license check or online feature needs connectivity depends on the game and the console’s account settings, so do not treat digital access as a universal offline guarantee or a universal always-online requirement.

Digital format advantages
- No disc handling: You can start a downloaded game without locating, inserting or changing a disc.
- Immediate delivery when the download is available: There is no physical shipment or store visit, although download time depends on your connection and the game’s size.
- Works on the Digital Edition: Digital purchases are the native format for that console.
- One console can mix formats: A disc-drive PS5 can download digital games even if you usually buy boxed releases.
Digital format limitations
- An account and internet connection are needed to purchase and download: A Digital Edition cannot use a disc as a fallback.
- Library access is account-based: Keep track of which account made the purchase and follow Sony’s current license and sharing rules.
- Store availability can change: A digital listing, edition or promotion may differ by country and by date.
- There is no automatic price advantage: A digital version can be discounted, full-price or unavailable while a physical copy has a different offer, and the reverse can also happen.

Who should choose physical games?
Choose physical if you already own PS4 discs
If your shelves contain supported PS4 discs, a disc-drive PS5 protects that investment in access. You can continue using compatible discs and investigate a title-specific PS5 upgrade where one exists. A Digital Edition without a drive cannot use those discs, so choosing it would require buying digital versions separately when available.
Choose physical if disc playback is part of your plan
Physical is the only choice when you intend to buy PS5 releases on Blu-ray or use the console for supported PS4 discs. It also avoids making the availability of a digital listing your only route to a particular game. Confirm that the exact title has the disc edition you want; a game being available on PS5 does not prove that a boxed release exists in your country.

The disc-drive console is the safer choice for an uncertain library. It can download digital games, so you retain access to PlayStation Store purchases while keeping the option to use discs. The trade-off is the console configuration and price you choose, which should be evaluated against the games you actually plan to buy rather than against a blanket claim that discs cost less.
Who should choose digital games?
Choose digital if you want an all-download library
A Digital Edition suits a player who has no disc collection, does not need Blu-ray game playback and prefers obtaining games through PlayStation Store. It removes the need to change discs and makes the account library the central way to access purchases.
Choose digital when your planned titles are primarily store purchases
Make a list of the games you expect to buy over the next year and check their PlayStation Store editions, prices and regional availability. If every important title is offered digitally and you do not need existing discs, the Digital Edition may meet your needs. This is a title-by-title decision, not proof that digital is universally better value.

Do not choose digital solely for a supposed permanent saving
Game prices, discounts and availability change by title, country, retailer and date. No independent statistic establishes a universal percentage saving for digital games, and no market-wide resale comparison supports a simple rule. Compare the actual current offer for the edition you want, including any upgrade path from a PS4 version.
How to decide before you buy the console
- List your existing discs. Write down the PS4 and PS5 games you expect to keep using, then verify that each PS4 title is supported and whether its upgrade requires a disc-drive PS5.
- Check your must-have releases. For each game, record whether a disc edition, digital edition, or both are sold in your country and whether different editions contain different content.
- Check the account you will use. Digital purchases require a PlayStation account. Decide which account should own the library before making purchases.
- Compare current prices, not format assumptions. Check the exact edition and offer in PlayStation Store and at legitimate retailers. Treat a sale, bundle or introductory price as date-specific.
- Decide whether disc playback has future value. If you might buy discs later, use PS4 discs, or want the option to switch formats, a disc-drive console avoids the Digital Edition’s limitation.
- Check the model before planning an add-on drive. Only certain PS5 Digital Edition slim model groups and PS5 Pro are listed as compatible. Do not assume every Digital Edition can be upgraded.
The add-on disc drive: compatibility and setup
Sony’s accessory listing identifies compatibility with PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 model groups and PS5 Pro. The drive supports PS5 games and supported PS4 titles on Blu-ray, plus 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD movies. Internet access is required to pair the drive and console during setup.
Before purchasing
- Find the model number on the console packaging or system information and confirm that it is CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or a PS5 Pro configuration listed by Sony.
- Check that the drive is the accessory intended for that model family, rather than assuming drives are interchangeable.
- Plan the pairing step where the console can connect to the internet.
- Compare the total cost with buying a disc-drive PS5 in the first place, using current prices for your region.
What the drive changes
After a compatible drive is installed and paired, the supported Digital Edition or PS5 Pro gains disc playback. That makes it possible to use eligible PS4 discs, PS5 game discs and supported movie discs. It does not turn every PS4 game into a PS5 version, remove a game’s regional restrictions, or guarantee an upgrade offer.
How a PS4 disc-to-PS5 upgrade works
- Confirm eligibility. Check the specific PS4 game’s current upgrade offer. Sony notes that offers can be free or paid, time-limited and unavailable for some games.
- Use the right console. The disc-based route requires a PS5 with a disc drive, either built in or a compatible add-on drive.
- Match the region. Sony’s guidance requires the PS4 disc country or region to match the country or region of the PlayStation account.
- Redeem or purchase the upgrade. Follow the game’s current on-console instructions and review the price before confirming.
- Download the digital PS5 version. The upgraded version is digital, so allow for the required download and storage space.
- Keep the PS4 disc inserted when playing. The disc remains required to validate use of the upgraded version every time you play.
If the upgrade option does not appear, check the disc region, the account region, the game edition and the current offer terms before assuming the console is faulty. A PS4 disc cannot be inserted into an unmodified Digital Edition.
Prices, sales and the resale question
There is no defensible rule that physical PS5 games are always cheaper or that digital games always save money. A retailer may discount a boxed edition while PlayStation Store sells the digital edition at its regular price; a store promotion may produce the opposite result. Bundles, deluxe editions, launch timing and regional pricing can all change the comparison.

Use a simple like-for-like check:
- Compare the same game edition, not a standard physical copy with a digital deluxe edition.
- Compare the final price in the same country and currency.
- Record whether each price is a temporary sale, a preorder offer or a recurring list price.
- Include delivery or collection costs for a physical purchase and the storage/download requirement for a digital purchase.
- Check whether a PS4 disc upgrade is free, paid or time-limited before treating the older disc as the cheaper route.
Resale, lending and trade-in value also depend on the title, the seller and applicable policies. The available evidence does not establish a market-wide resale percentage or a universal advantage for either format, so treat those possibilities as personal circumstances rather than guaranteed savings.

Sony’s US PS5 buy page currently displays a forward-looking notice saying that newly released PlayStation games will be available for purchase digitally only from January 2028. The same notice says discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console.
This is a notice on the US page, not evidence of an identical policy in every country. Recheck the wording and your region’s retail policy before making a long-term purchase decision. It also does not mean existing discs suddenly stop working in January 2028; the notice specifically refers to games released before that date and says those discs can continue to be played on the console.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying a Digital Edition for a disc library
Existing PS4 discs do not become usable merely because the game is backward-compatible. Choose a disc-drive console or verify that your exact Digital Edition supports the add-on drive.
Assuming every PS4 game has a free PS5 upgrade
Upgrade terms vary. Check the individual game, because an upgrade may be paid, time-limited or unavailable.

Forgetting the disc after upgrading
The digital PS5 version obtained through a qualifying PS4 disc upgrade still requires that disc to be inserted for play.
Ignoring account region
A disc-based upgrade requires the disc’s country or region to match the PlayStation account. A mismatch can prevent the expected offer from appearing.
Treating the add-on drive as universal
Compatibility is limited to the listed PS5 Digital Edition CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 model groups and PS5 Pro. Verify the model before spending money on the accessory.

Using a general price slogan
Check current, like-for-like offers for the exact game. Neither format has a proven universal price advantage.
Bottom-line decision
Buy physical PS5 games, or choose a PS5 with a disc drive, if you need existing PS4 discs, want PS5 Blu-ray releases, or prefer keeping both purchase routes open. Buy digital games, and consider the Digital Edition, if your library will be downloaded, you do not need disc playback, and the titles you want are available digitally at acceptable prices. If you are undecided, the disc-drive PS5 is the flexible option because it supports digital purchases as well as discs; just verify the actual console price and your planned games rather than assuming that flexibility automatically costs less over time.
