Physical game cartridges vs. standard game cards on Nintendo Switch 2: storage, installation and resale

On Nintendo Switch 2, “cartridge” usually means a physical game card, but Nintendo has two materially different physical formats: the regular game card and the Game-Key Card. A regular card carries the game software, although updates or downloadable content can still use console storage. A Game-Key Card is only the physical key; it requires an internet download, free storage and the card inserted every time you play.

That distinction matters more than the box being labelled “physical.” It determines whether you can start playing offline, how much space the release consumes, what happens when you move it to another console, and what a future buyer is actually purchasing. Save data is separate from both formats: Switch 2 stores saves in system memory, not on the card or a microSD Express card.

The terminology: “cartridge” is not a third Nintendo format

Players often call any removable game medium a cartridge. Nintendo’s current Switch 2 terminology is game card. Within that category, Nintendo distinguishes regular game cards from Game-Key Cards. Treating those as interchangeable leads to incorrect assumptions about installation and offline play.

Regular game cards

A regular game card contains the game software intended to run from the card. When you insert one, its software icon appears on the Switch 2 HOME Menu. The console supports regular Switch 2 game cards and compatible cards made for the earlier Switch, although Nintendo warns that some older titles may not be fully compatible. Compatibility is a title-specific question, not a guarantee attached to every physical card.

  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

“Contains the game” does not mean “uses no console storage.” Nintendo’s support material does not establish that every regular-card release avoids storage for updates, patches, downloadable content or other supplementary data. A regular card can therefore reduce the initial download burden without eliminating storage planning altogether.

Game-Key Cards

Nintendo describes a Game-Key Card this way: “Game-key cards are different from regular game cards, because they don’t contain the full game data. Instead, the game-key card is your ‘key’ to downloading the full game to your system via the internet.” The card is physical, but the playable software is downloaded to the console’s internal storage or to a microSD Express card.

You need an internet connection and enough free space for that download. Afterward, the Game-Key Card must remain inserted whenever you want to launch the game. Removing it does not turn the downloaded copy into a standalone digital license.

A box with a download code

Some publishers put a download code in physical packaging without including any game card. Such a package can look like a boxed physical release while behaving like a digital purchase: there is no card to insert, and the code must be redeemed through the console’s software storefront. Check the exact package contents rather than relying on the word “physical” in a retailer title.

Switch 2 Edition cards

Nintendo says physical Switch 2 Edition cards include the Switch game and its upgrade pack on the same card. That is different from a package containing only a code, but the exact edition still matters when comparing a standard release with an upgraded version.

How storage and installation differ

Question Regular game card Game-Key Card
Where is the main game data? On the physical game card, subject to the title’s release design. Downloaded to system memory or a microSD Express card; the card itself does not contain the full game.
Is an internet connection needed before first play? Not established as a universal requirement; check the individual title and any update prompt. Yes. The initial download requires internet access.
Is free console storage needed? Possibly for updates, DLC or other supplementary data; the official guidance does not promise zero storage for every card. Yes, enough for the complete download and later updates or DLC.
Must the card stay inserted? Use the card according to the title’s normal physical-card requirements. Yes, every time you play.
Where are saves stored? System memory. System memory.

What happens with a regular card

  1. Insert the card with the console powered as directed by Nintendo’s card-handling instructions.
  2. Look for the game icon on the HOME Menu.
  3. Start the game. If the console requests an update, download it before continuing or when the title’s features require it.
  4. Keep sufficient internal storage available for patches, downloadable content and any other data the title identifies as required.

The important qualification is that Nintendo’s support pages do not say every regular-card game has the same storage behavior. Some releases may be largely playable from the card, while updates or expansions still occupy system storage. Read the package or listing for the specific edition instead of assuming that “regular card” means “no installation.”

What happens with a Game-Key Card

  1. Connect Switch 2 to the internet and sign in to the user account that will download the software.
  2. Insert the Game-Key Card and select its software icon.
  3. Allow the console to download the full game to system memory or a microSD Express card. The required free space is title-specific and should be stated on the package or listing.
  4. Wait for the download to complete, including any required update.
  5. Leave the physical card inserted whenever you launch the game.

If you buy a Game-Key Card while travelling or have a metered connection, the “physical” format does not remove the largest practical hurdle: you still need a connection and a download large enough for the complete game.

Using microSD Express storage

Nintendo identifies microSD Express as expandable storage for software data, including downloaded games, updates and DLC. It is a capacity-management option, not a universal requirement. Nintendo’s data-management guidance says no individual game currently requires extra storage to play, so do not buy a card on the assumption that every title demands one. It becomes useful when internal space is limited, when several Game-Key Card downloads are installed, or when updates and expansions accumulate.

Moving software data to microSD Express does not move save data. Saves remain in system memory, and Nintendo says they cannot be saved or copied to a microSD Express card.

Do physical Switch 2 games need to be installed?

There is no single yes-or-no answer. A regular game card may let the console read the main software from the card, but you may still need storage for updates or DLC. A Game-Key Card always requires a full download before first play. A package containing only a download code behaves as a digital download and has no game card at all.

Use this decision rule when reading a listing:

  • “Regular game card” or ordinary physical card: expect the main game on the card, but verify update and DLC requirements.
  • “Game-Key Card”: plan for internet access, the listed download size and a card inserted for every play session.
  • “Download code” or “code in box”: plan for a digital download and do not expect removable physical media.
  • Unclear wording: check the publisher’s specification, package photographs and the retailer’s exact edition before buying.

Where saves live—and what a sale transfers

Switch 2 stores game saves in system memory regardless of whether you play from a physical card or a downloaded copy. The save is associated with the console’s user data, not with the removable card. Selling or lending a card therefore does not hand the next player your save file, and buying a used card does not bring the previous owner’s progress to your console.

Because saves are not on the game card, removing, replacing or reselling the card is separate from managing progress. A player who changes consoles should follow Nintendo’s system-level save and user-data procedures; the card itself is not a save backup.

Moving a Game-Key Card between consoles

Nintendo says a Game-Key Card can be used on another Switch 2 system, but the experience is not the same as moving a fully self-contained cartridge.

  1. Insert the card into the second Switch 2.
  2. Connect that console to the internet the first time the game is launched there.
  3. Download the game data to the second console’s internal storage or its microSD Express card.
  4. Keep the card inserted whenever the game is played on that system.

The physical card can move between systems, but each system that needs to play the title must have the required software data downloaded. Nintendo’s guidance supports using the card on another console; it does not promise that a future download will always remain available, nor does it establish any resale value.

What physical ownership means for resale

A removable card gives a buyer something tangible to receive, inspect and pass on. That can be convenient for households that share games or for owners who prefer not to keep every title tied to one account. It does not, however, make resale value predictable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No reliable market-price or demand statistics are established here. The value of a particular title depends on the exact edition, condition, completeness, compatibility, current demand and whether the buyer accepts its download requirements. A Game-Key Card can be resold as physical media, but the recipient still needs internet access, enough storage and the card for play. A regular card may be more convenient for an offline-oriented buyer, yet demand remains title-specific.

What to inspect before buying used

  • Format: confirm that the item includes a regular game card, a Game-Key Card or only a download code.
  • Edition: distinguish the original Switch release, a Switch 2 Edition and any upgrade-pack arrangement.
  • Completeness: check that the card, case and any required code are present. A missing code can change what the package is worth.
  • Condition: inspect the card and case and confirm that the seller identifies the correct title and region.
  • Compatibility: check Nintendo’s current title-specific compatibility information, especially for an older Switch game.
  • Market evidence: compare recent completed sales or current listings for the exact title and edition rather than a similarly named release.

Do not treat a Game-Key Card as a guarantee of permanent access to a server-hosted download. The format is transferable between Switch 2 systems under Nintendo’s stated process, but future download availability and resale price are separate questions.

A buyer’s checklist for any physical release

Use the following sequence before ordering or opening a game:

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - US Version
  • New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
  • Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
  • Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
  • Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
  • Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
  1. Identify the medium. Look for “regular game card,” “Game-Key Card” or “download code.” If the listing does not say, find a package image or the publisher’s product specification.
  2. Read the storage requirement. For a Game-Key Card, record the stated download size and compare it with free space on system memory or microSD Express. For a regular card, look for notes about updates, DLC or additional downloads.
  3. Confirm the play condition. Verify whether the card must remain inserted. Game-Key Cards always do.
  4. Check connectivity. If first launch requires a download, make sure the intended console can connect to the internet and that the connection can handle the required data.
  5. Check edition and compatibility. Confirm whether the package is a Switch 2 Edition, a standard Switch release or a title with known compatibility limitations.
  6. Plan save storage correctly. Keep system memory available for saves; a microSD Express card is for software data, not save backups.
  7. For a used purchase, verify completeness and demand. Compare the exact edition and condition with current completed sales or listings.

Common problems and practical fixes

The Game-Key Card will not start offline

This is expected behavior, not necessarily a defective card. Connect the console to the internet and complete the initial download. Keep the card inserted after installation; the downloaded files do not replace the physical key.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The download stops because storage is full

Check the title’s required free space, then remove or archive unneeded software data or use a compatible microSD Express card for software storage. Do not expect moving data to microSD Express to relocate saves, which remain in system memory.

A regular card asks for an update

Allow the update if you want current fixes, online features or downloadable content. A regular card contains the game software, but Nintendo does not promise that every update or expansion fits on the card. Keep enough system storage for the additional data.

The package contains no card

Look for wording such as “download code” or “code in box.” Some physical-looking packages contain only a redemption code. Redeem it through the console’s software storefront and plan for a digital download; there is no removable card to lend or resell.

An older Switch card is not fully compatible

Switch 2 supports compatible Switch cards, but Nintendo cautions that some titles may not be fully compatible. Check the current title-specific compatibility information before buying or assuming that an older physical release will work exactly as it did on the original console.

A used card appears to have someone else’s progress

That cannot be transferred through the card itself. Switch 2 stores saves in system memory, so the previous owner’s save data is not part of the physical item you purchased.

Which format suits which player?

Your priority Usually the better fit Reason
Play with minimal downloading and keep a tangible item Regular game card, after checking update and DLC requirements The main software is on the card, unlike a Game-Key Card.
Buy a physical item even when the full game is downloaded Game-Key Card It can move between Switch 2 systems, but requires an internet download and card insertion.
Play where internet access is unreliable A regular card release with confirmed offline behavior Game-Key Cards require a first download; verify the individual regular-card title.
Install many large games Either format with planned microSD Express capacity Downloaded games, updates and DLC use software storage; no individual game is currently identified by Nintendo as universally requiring extra storage.
Pass games to another owner A complete physical release, after checking the exact format The card can be handed over, but resale value, future downloads and demand are not guaranteed.

Bottom line: read the format, not just the word “physical”

For Switch 2, the decisive comparison is regular game card versus Game-Key Card. Regular cards put the main game on removable media but may still need storage for updates and DLC. Game-Key Cards are physical keys for a full internet download, require free console or microSD Express space and must stay inserted to play. Both formats use system memory for saves, and neither format by itself guarantees a particular resale price. Verify the exact card type, download requirement, edition and compatibility information for each title before buying.
