Verdict: Photopea is one of the most capable free image editors you can use in a browser. It is especially useful for opening, editing and saving PSD files without installing software, and ordinary file editing happens locally on your device, according to Photopea. It is a strong fit for students, occasional editors and Photoshop users who need a convenient fallback. It is not a guarantee that every complex Photoshop document will look or behave identically, nor is it a full substitute for Photoshop’s desktop and team ecosystem.
What is Photopea?
Photopea is a browser-based editor for raster and vector graphics. It covers photo retouching, compositing, illustration, layout work and basic web or UI mockups, with a layer-based interface familiar to Photoshop users. You can open it on a desktop, laptop, tablet or phone without installing a desktop application. Its learning materials describe workflows ranging from resizing images to designing webpages and processing photographs.
The no-install advantage is most useful on a school Chromebook, shared computer or device where you cannot install software. For detailed work, a large screen, keyboard and precise input device make the interface much easier to use; a phone is better treated as an access option than a comfortable production workspace.
Is Photopea free?
You can use the editor without paying, but the free experience is ad-supported. Advertising takes screen space and can feel particularly intrusive on a small display; user-review sites also include ads among recurring complaints, though reviews are subjective rather than controlled usability tests (G2 reviews; Capterra reviews).

Photopea’s privacy policy describes Premium as a one-time purchase for a selected period, after which an account returns to free access. The current price is not established here, so check the live account or checkout screen rather than relying on old pricing. AI tools can have feature-specific credits or third-party dependencies, so do not assume every AI feature is unlimited or included on the same terms.
How good is Photopea with PSD files?
PSD is Photopea’s main working format: it can open and save PSD files, making it more useful for Photoshop handoffs than editors designed only for quick image adjustments. The official file guide explains opening, saving and exporting. Saving as PSD is the better choice when you need to retain editable layers and other document structure; exporting a finished PNG or JPG is for distribution and can flatten or discard that structure.
Opening a PSD successfully is not proof of complete Photoshop fidelity. Results depend on the document and the features it uses. Fonts and text metrics, layer effects, adjustment behavior, linked assets, smart objects, color appearance, artboards and newer Photoshop-specific features can differ or be unsupported. If another person must continue the file in Photoshop, check the actual result there before treating Photopea as a production round-trip solution.

A safe PSD handoff workflow
- Open the file in Photopea and inspect the layers, text, masks, effects and embedded or linked content that matter to the job.
- Make a separate working copy before editing a client or master file.
- Use File → Save as PSD for an editable handoff. Reopen that copy in the target application and verify the important elements.
- Use File → Export As for a final PNG, JPG or other delivery format. Check export options such as resolution or JPG quality; treat the exported image as a finished output, not an editable master.
Formats and editing tools
Photopea’s homepage says it supports more than 40 formats, including PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP, WebP, SVG, PDF, AI, AVIF, HEIC, TIFF, MP4, EPS, INDD and Figma. Its official repository also lists formats such as PSD, Sketch, XD, XCF, FIG, KRA, CDR and RAW-related formats. A format appearing on a supported list means it can be opened or handled in some way; it does not guarantee that every feature, effect, metadata field or animation behavior survives unchanged.

Photopea supports selections, transforms, retouching and filters; layer groups, masks, clipping masks, blend modes, styles and adjustment layers; and paths, shapes, text and vector masks. It also supports channels, smart objects, brushes, gradients and imported fonts. The exact behavior of an imported resource or Photoshop-specific feature should be checked in the document where it matters.
How easy is it to learn?
Photopea is approachable if you already understand Photoshop concepts: many familiar ideas, such as layers, masks, selections and adjustment layers, transfer directly. For a first-time editor, it can be intimidating because it is a professional-style workspace rather than a simplified template app. Start with the official tutorials for basic operations, then move on to layers and masks as needed.

That power makes Photopea more suitable for learning transferable image-editing skills than for someone who only wants a guided social-media template. Its browser access lowers the setup barrier, but it does not remove the learning curve.
Does Photopea work offline?
Photopea says the editor can continue working after its page has loaded and the device disconnects from the internet. Initial loading still requires a connection, and cloud storage, external resources and some online or AI integrations may not be available offline. Offline editing also does not create an automatic backup: work that has not been saved can be lost if the tab closes or the browser crashes.
Privacy: what stays on your device?
Photopea’s privacy policy says files opened for ordinary editing do not leave the device. That is a useful privacy distinction from a workflow that uploads every image to an editor’s server, but it is not a blanket claim of zero network activity or an absolute security guarantee.

- AI workflows may use third-party services or credentials supplied by the user. Photopea’s AI tutorial discusses a third-party service, and its API documentation describes integrations that can send results to a developer-controlled server.
- Browser extensions, malware, a compromised device and shared-device access remain risks regardless of where the editor processes the image.
For sensitive work, use a trusted, managed device and save locally if you do not want an optional cloud connection involved. Do not treat local editing as a substitute for sound device security or a backup.

There is no single speed or file-size limit that applies to every user. Performance depends on the browser and device, available memory, document dimensions, layer count and the filters or transforms in use. Smaller and moderate projects are the natural fit; a very large or complex PSD can consume substantial memory, slow down operations or make a browser tab unstable. Mobile hardware and screen size add further constraints. Photopea’s guidance recommends a large screen and precise input for comfortable work.
User reports mention inconsistent performance on larger files, but they are anecdotes, not benchmarks (G2; Photopea community). If a project matters, test a representative copy on the actual device and browser before committing to it. Save a local PSD under a new filename before substantial edits, keep versioned copies, and make a flattened export as a fallback when appropriate. If a save fails, try saving the PSD under a new name, reduce the document’s complexity, or export a flattened backup.

Photopea vs. Photoshop
Photopea overlaps with many core Photoshop workflows, but the difference is broader than a list of tools: it is a browser editor, its PSD fidelity is document-dependent, and it does not provide the same Adobe-specific tools, plugins, team administration or production ecosystem.

Adobe’s Photoshop plans page is the source for the quoted US price and describes Photoshop as subscription-only. The price is a US listing, not a worldwide guarantee, and plan terms can change. Choose Photoshop when its compatibility, advanced features, support expectations or collaboration ecosystem justify a recurring cost—not simply because Photopea has ads.

- Professional teams: Consider it for discrete tasks, not as an assumed replacement for complex production workflows, plugins, administration or collaboration systems.
- Developers: Photopea documents an API for embedding the editor, passing files and resources, scripting and saving results to a server. The API is free to use, but Photopea warns it is still developing and may contain critical bugs; review the API documentation and live API guide before building a workflow around it.
