Photonic quantum computers use particles of light to carry quantum information through optical circuits. They can transmit quantum states with very low decoherence, run optical components at high clock rates and connect modules naturally with fiber. Those advantages do not make every calculation run at the speed of light, however. Useful throughput is constrained by photon generation, loss, detector efficiency, probabilistic gates, classical feedforward and the large overhead of error correction.
Today’s demonstrations show high-fidelity components, cluster-state networking and important error-correction primitives. They do not yet represent broadly deployed, fault-tolerant machines delivering general commercial quantum advantage.

What photonic quantum computing is
In a photonic quantum computer, information is encoded in optical modes rather than in currents circulating through superconducting circuits or the energy levels of trapped ions. A system can use discrete-variable qubits, in which properties such as photon number or polarization represent 0 and 1, or continuous-variable modes, in which the amplitude and phase of an optical field carry the state.

Photons are attractive because they travel through optical media with little interaction with their surroundings. That makes long-distance transmission and chip-to-chip links comparatively natural. The same weak interaction creates a central engineering problem: photons do not readily interact with one another, so many useful gates must be built from interference, measurement and additional resource states.
How a photonic quantum operation works
A simplified run looks like this:
- Create and herald photons. A source attempts to produce the required single photons, squeezed states or entangled states. A heralding detector may signal whether a usable event occurred.
- Encode the quantum information. The state is placed in a polarization, path, time-bin, frequency or continuous-variable mode.
- Transform the modes. Waveguides and interferometers mix paths and phases. Active switches select routes and can create the time-domain structure needed for large computations.
- Entangle or fuse resource states. Linear-optical measurements and prepared resource states implement operations that are often probabilistic. Failed attempts must be detected and rerouted or repeated.
- Measure. Detectors convert optical events into electrical signals. The useful result depends on detecting every photon needed by the algorithm, not merely on the chip completing an interference pattern.
- Feed forward and decode. Classical electronics interpret measurement outcomes, choose later optical settings and run error-correction or sampling post-processing. Latency in this loop can limit the rate even when the optical components themselves switch quickly.
This sequence explains why a fast optical carrier is not the same thing as a fast quantum computer. A missing photon, an inconclusive detector event or a delayed classical decision can invalidate an otherwise correct optical operation.
How fast are photonic quantum computers?
There is no single honest “photonic quantum-computer speed.” Reported figures refer to different layers of the system and cannot be compared without their conditions. Five measures are useful:
| Measure | What it means | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Clock or pulse rate | How often the hardware attempts an operation or launches a pulse sequence. | It sets the maximum attempt rate, not the rate of successful, decoded results. |
| Useful event rate | How often all required photons are generated, survive, and are detected. | Source probability, coupling loss and detector efficiency can reduce this far below the clock. |
| Gate and measurement fidelity | The probability that a detected operation or readout is correct, conditional on the event being observed. | High conditional fidelity does not compensate for very frequent loss. |
| Classical-control latency | Time for detection, feedforward, switching and decoding. | Long loops force idle periods or additional memory and buffering. |
| Logical throughput | The rate of error-corrected, application-level answers. | This is the metric that matters for useful algorithms, and it includes error-correction overhead. |
An architecture analysis from Xanadu reports a 1 MHz quantum clock in its loss model and gives 672 ns as a worst-case latency for one serial classical-control path. Those are architecture-specific assumptions, not a universal speed rating for photonic machines. A system can attempt one million pulses per second and still deliver far fewer valid logical operations if source, transmission or detection losses are high.
Optical propagation is extremely fast, but the relevant comparison is end-to-end time per reliable logical operation. That includes retries, synchronization, detector recovery, feedforward and decoding. For algorithms that need long chains of successful entangling operations, the probability of losing at least one photon can dominate the schedule.

What current hardware has demonstrated
Recent work shows that individual pieces of the stack can reach impressive conditional performance. A 2025 Nature paper describing integrated silicon-photonics modules reported:
| Component metric | Reported value | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| State-preparation-and-measurement fidelity | 99.98% ± 0.01% | Conditional on photon detection; loss is excluded. |
| Hong–Ou–Mandel visibility | 99.50% ± 0.25% | Interference quality under the experiment’s conditions. |
| Two-qubit-fusion fidelity | 99.22% ± 0.12% | Conditional metric, not a whole-system logical error rate. |
| Chip-to-chip interconnect fidelity | 99.72% ± 0.04% | Also conditional on detected photons and does not account for loss. |
These numbers demonstrate precise preparation, interference, fusion and interconnect operations when the relevant photons arrive. They should not be read as the probability that an entire, error-corrected computation succeeds.

A 2024 Nature Photonics platform paper identifies single-photon sources, integrated photonic chips and single-photon detectors as the core roadmap, with massive multiplexing proposed to make usable source events more available. Separate experiments have demonstrated cluster-state links between chips and distributed quantum-computing operations over optical network connections. Such results establish networking and resource-state primitives; they do not by themselves establish a fault-tolerant machine at useful scale.
Is photonic quantum computing faster than superconducting qubits?
Raw optical speed cannot establish a universal winner. Superconducting systems generally offer fast, deterministic microwave control inside a cryogenic processor, while photonic systems offer high-rate optical pulses, low-decoherence transmission and easier physical separation between modules. The meaningful comparison is application- and architecture-specific.
| Comparison axis | Photonic approach | Superconducting approach |
|---|---|---|
| Physical carrier | Photons in waveguides, interferometers and fiber. | Microwave excitations in superconducting circuits. |
| Transmission | Natural low-decoherence links and room-temperature fiber between cryogenic or integrated modules. | Signals remain in a cryogenic wiring and packaging environment. |
| Gate behavior | Interference and measurement can make sources and gates nondeterministic; resource states and feedforward are required. | Native gates can be driven directly but suffer control error, crosstalk and coherence limits. |
| Cooling | Detectors and some sources may require cryogenic operation; optical chips can be integrated with less cooling than the active detection hardware. | Quantum circuits require deep cryogenic refrigeration. |
| Scaling pressure | Very large numbers of sources, switches, detectors, fibers and calibrated interconnects, with loss managed at every stage. | Increasing qubit count, wiring density, calibration complexity and cryogenic heat load. |
| Feedforward | Often central to routing, fusion and error correction, so detector and electronics latency directly affects throughput. | Also important, but the control stack and timing constraints differ. |
| Best current conclusion | Promising for modular networking and photonic resource states; no demonstrated general speed advantage. | Strong control and gate demonstrations; no demonstrated general speed advantage. |
Comparing qubit counts or carrier frequencies alone is misleading. A smaller machine with lower loss and better logical error rates can outperform a larger, faster-clocked machine on a particular task. A credible comparison should report the same algorithm, logical error probability, runtime definition, post-selection rules and total classical overhead.

What photonic quantum computers may be used for
Chemistry and materials simulation
Simulating molecular electronic structure and new materials is a leading long-term target. The required circuits are deep and error-sensitive, so this use case depends on fault-tolerant logical qubits rather than today’s component demonstrations.

Factoring and cryptanalysis
Large-scale factoring is another fault-tolerant objective. Photonic hardware is not currently a consumer cryptanalysis tool, and present demonstrations do not threaten deployed public-key systems.
Sampling and bosonic experiments
Photonic platforms naturally generate and measure many-mode optical states, making them well suited to boson-sampling-style experiments, Gaussian and non-Gaussian state preparation, and cluster-state research. A striking sampling benchmark is not automatically an advantage for a general optimization, chemistry or machine-learning workload; the classical baseline and sampling definition must be specified.
Quantum networking and distributed computing
Fiber-compatible photons can connect separated processors, create distributed cluster states and move entanglement between modules. This is one of the clearest architectural advantages of photonics, although coupling loss, synchronization and memory remain critical constraints.
Modular scaling
Instead of fabricating one enormous monolithic processor, designers can connect many smaller photonic modules. That shifts the scaling problem toward manufacturing yield, fiber coupling, timing alignment, detector count, calibration and loss budgeting. Modularity helps only when the interconnect loss and control overhead stay below the error-correction threshold.

Why photonic quantum computing is difficult
Optical loss
Loss is the dominant systems problem identified in leading architecture analyses. Losing one photon can erase a qubit, break an entangled resource state or force a retry. Loss accumulates across sources, filters, switches, waveguides, fiber couplers and detectors. Error correction can tolerate loss only by consuming many additional photons and measurements, so reducing loss improves both reliability and resource requirements.
Nondeterministic sources and gates
As PsiQuantum’s technology overview puts it, “The biggest obstacle to the scaleup of photonic quantum computing is the fact that the photon sources and gates are both nondeterministic.” A machine must detect failed attempts, store or reroute successful states and supply enough redundancy to keep the computation moving. Multiplexing can raise the chance of obtaining a usable photon, but it adds switches, delay lines and loss.
Detector efficiency and timing
Detectors must register the needed photons with high efficiency, distinguish relevant events and recover quickly enough for feedforward. Dark counts, dead time and imperfect photon-number resolution can produce false or ambiguous outcomes. Detector improvements may also increase cryogenic heat load, creating a packaging trade-off.
Filters, packaging and coupling
Filters must remove unwanted wavelengths without discarding too many useful photons. Chip-to-fiber packaging must be low loss and mechanically stable. As systems grow, thousands or millions of optical interfaces must remain aligned and calibrated, turning packaging into a computational reliability issue rather than a simple assembly task.
Classical feedforward and decoding
Measurement-based photonic architectures depend on rapid classical decisions. Electronics must interpret detector signals, set switches and update later measurements before optical information moves beyond the available buffer. A slow decoder can erase the benefit of a fast optical clock.
Best Value
Manufacturing scale and calibration
A useful machine requires huge populations of sources, switches, detectors and interconnects with consistent performance. Fabrication variation, thermal drift and alignment errors require continuous calibration. Improving one component can expose a bottleneck elsewhere, so headline fidelity for a single gate is not a substitute for a system-level error budget.
Fault-tolerance overhead
Current platforms are still working toward the threshold at which encoded logical qubits become more reliable as more physical resources are added. Until that regime is demonstrated at useful scale, the gap between laboratory primitives and high-value applications remains substantial.
Are photonic quantum computers practical yet?
They are practical as research platforms and as testbeds for integrated optics, single-photon detection, networking and error-correction methods. They are not yet practical as general-purpose replacements for classical computers or as broadly available services delivering fault-tolerant quantum advantage.
When evaluating a claimed photonic system, ask:
- Is the reported rate a pulse clock, detected-event rate or logical-result rate?
- Are fidelity figures conditional on detecting photons, and is loss reported separately?
- How many photons, modes and measurements are required per logical qubit or answer?
- Does the experiment use post-selection that would be unavailable in a real-time application?
- What are the detector efficiency, coupling loss, switching loss and feedforward latency?
- Has a logical error rate below the fault-tolerance threshold been demonstrated at a scale relevant to the claimed application?
- Are classical decoding time, retries and failed shots included in the runtime?
A credible claim will define its workload, baseline, success criterion and accounting of discarded events. Without those details, “faster” may describe only the optical clock rather than useful computation.
What to remember about photonic quantum-computing speed
Photons provide fast propagation, high-rate optical control and natural networking, but they do not bypass the need to create, preserve, detect and correct quantum information. The decisive metrics are successful logical events, total loss, conditional fidelity, feedforward latency and error-correction overhead. Photonic systems have demonstrated strong building blocks and modular links; broad, fault-tolerant quantum advantage remains an engineering goal rather than an established capability.
